The connection to Australia makes Dank Pods calling everything in his videos “nuggets” makes a lot more sense now lmao

I didn't know we (Australia) had such an influence on origin of such a widespread word. Amusingly, Nugget is also still used here as a nickname for a short & stocky person.

I had a budgie that was named Chicken Nugget. He lived to be 10 years, before he had to be put down & the vet said he had a very long life. 🙂 I miss him. 😭

I found it interesting that there's a connection between shoe polish and the word "nugget" that comes from New Zealand...especially when you consider that there's a popular brand of shoe polish (and other shoe care-related accessories) in the US called Kiwi
@WayneKitching

In South Africa, both brands (Nugget and Kiwi) are available. Nugget is also used as a generic word for shoe polish, but not necessarily coloured black

Growing up in Denver, I remember hearing about our basketball team, the Nuggets. As a young kid, I definitely thought they were named after chicken nuggets. I later learned it actually referred to gold nuggets, as reference to Colorado's history in the gold rush, but I definitely still think the Denver Chicken Nuggets would be a much funnier team name

There was a Nugget team in Denver in the early 1950s which didn't last long. The modern team founded in 1967 was originally called the Rockets. (Speaking of "Team Rocket"! ) When the two leagues "merged" several years later, there was also a Rocket team in Houston. Denver's were forced to drop the name, adopting the older Nugget moniker.

Two Rocket teams were one too many in a 30-team league. But the nine-team Canadian Football League somehow had room for both Roughriders and Rough Riders.

I also follow Geoff Lindsay on KZbin, so I am fascinated by the way Patrick talks. He sometimes drops the 't' in 'nugget,' but not always. I wonder if some kids in the UK would spell 'nugget' as 'nugger' if they live in an area where people drop the 'to.' (Bri'ish people like Jamie Oliver, who calls yoghurt 'yogguh,' for example.

If you were American you wouldn’t be unfamiliar with nugget being associated with gold. We are taught in elementary school about the California gold rush, the 49ers (ie 1849 way before the claims you made in this video), panning for gold, Levi’s blue jeans, ect. It’s common for gold and nugget to be associated in the United States

it kinda surprises me that you hadn't heard of gold nuggets before--i was already familiar with it thanks to cartoons (i'm certain there were some from Looney Tunes, but the one i remember most distinctly is from the _Timon & Pumbaa_ cartoon where Pumbaa finds a huge one and explicitly calls it a gold nugget)

I always thought nugget had its origin in gold-nugget. As in Mc Donalds named their chicken-abomination after gold to make them more appealing. (^_^)'

Also there's DankPods who calls electronics (especially music players) nuggets. (Do I hear him singing "A Whole New Nugg" in my head after saying that? Yes.) I'm guessing the gold nugget gave the chicken nugget it's name because the chicken nugget if cooked right is golden brown.

"Golden nugget" is common in the US, and has been since at least the mid nineteenth century. I own several pieces of jewelry in that form, they are everywhere. I doubt game makers were avoiding "ball" as a euphemism for testicle, it's not very Japanese to be Victorian about body parts. They knew that Americans were familiar with gold being in nugget form and probably assumed all English speakers were. Gold nuggets are virtually synonymous with the "Old West", restaurants, casinos, and streets are named "Gold Nugget" all over the West, especially Nevada. It's still popular all over the world as I can attest, having barely heard English in the crowds on my recent visit in Monument Valley. The chicken nugget looks like a gold nugget enough and it seems natural to connect the two, for Americans at least.

You think nugget is a weird word? Swedish has two absurd weird words for nugget used in daily speech. Jordgubbe = Strawberry. Jord = Earth, gubbe = old man. We used to call them jordbär, like other countries in our vicinity do (DK/NO = Jordbær. IS = Jarðarber. DE = Erdbeer) but no! The Smålanders (like the founder of IKEA) had to insist that this was the correct term in their dialectal tongue. Previous term was Ananassmultron = Pineapple-raspberry. The second is smörgås (maybe you've used the word smörgåsbord before), our word for sandwich. Smör = Butter. Gås = Goose. This is because back in the day when you were churning butter, lumps would appear on the top and "float around". Please take our naming rights away.
