Here we go lol Fans have come up with some terms for different moments of One Piece. What you've experienced is knows as Pain Piece. Its usually followed by Peak Piece. 19:10 Nami had just asked Gen-san to help her only to see him almost killed. And now she refuses to ask for help. She will shoulder all the burdens by herself 😭 20:05 and then we see the explanation of why Bellemere decided to use the money for the kids instead of herself. More than one thing can be true at once, she didnt want to deny their bond. But she also thought that the girls would be on their own and the world is dangerous, they could die. That was a risk she was not willing to take. It wasnt just her emotions, she was also thinking about what would be the best for them

the backstories do not get any sadder and or less harrowing c: and yeah Nami's backstory perfectly explains everything. How she became such a skilled thief, why she cares about money so much, why she hates pirates and why she has such a defeatist attitude (after all, the only reason the village didn't get massacared is they STOPPED fighting and resisting)

I think that one reson why the backstories hit so hard in One Piece is the contrast with how upbeat and fun the tone generally is. But also that they tend to recontextualise things we thought we knew! Like with Nami's obsession with money. The fruit are actually mandarines! Which are a symbol of riches. Apparently the translator thought people wouldn't recognise the word (?) and now everyone except for me in fandom calls them tangerines, lol.

Hello Rapidmango team, nice reaction as always, Bellemere is French (belle mère) for step mother. After Shanks/Luffy and Zeff/Sanji, Oda sensei builds again his story around one of his favorite themes (together with freedom), found family. There is a lot to say about this topic, a lot more to come too (each arc/saga addressing its own themes). Theme writing together with world building (of which we have a first glimpse in the baratie arc) and beloved characters is at the heard of the incredible success/longevity of one piece.

This is just the author showing a bit more of what he's capable of. 50% of one piece is laughter and good times, 30% of it is hype for impending amazingness, and 20% of it is an utter emotional wasteland. Invest in tissues: you can't go wrong!
