actually many guitar players do that! unless I didnt understand what you're talking about. BUT he is the first I saw doing nose chords. go watch him play "oceano" (by the brazilian composer djavan) at the acoustic guitar

That is used in classical guitar, like the guitar americans call "spanish guitar". A lot of classic music pieces have the thumb in there.
