The audience of the 80s 90s and even the early 2000s was very accepting of realistic cinema that shed light on the evils of society like corruption, marital abuse, disability, caste discrimination, politics, terrorism, violence etc. Which is why Nana sir's movies that showcased it like Tiranga, Krantiveer, Prahar, Agni sakshi, Parinda, Apaharan, Khamoshi, etc were lauded by audiences and were huge hits. From 2010s onwards the Indian film audience has hugely deteriorated in terms of its taste of cinema and what they want to consume. A part of that is also to do with the rise of social media, smartphones and lower attention spans. The minds of the audience need a quick hit of visual action, rather than hard hitting dialogues that make them ponder. Which is why the south industry and their action driven movies have taken over. RRR, Bahubali, KGFs, Pathan Jawan are the movies that now provide the gratification that this generation of audience is looking for. It is extremely tough to make movies like say Taxi no 9211 for theatrical audience now a days.
