@@ggggg77273 Was the same one I wound up talking to Chase Masterson who played Lita on DS9 for about 20 minutes. Super nice lady! Never got bored with my questions. I met Michael Dorn as well. Was funny. For a second he was talking about all the different actors who played Alexander Roszenko, and he couldn't remember the name of the last one who was played by Marc Worden. He was like "Yeah he was played by uh...another guy later one. Billy Dee Williams was there as well, and when I got to talking to him for a second he was like "We get all over". Then he turns to his agent or whatever sitting next to him and asks "Where in the hell are we again?" Lol he didn't know what city he was in. I also briefly met Robert Duncan Mcneill who plays Tom Paris and asked him if he ever read the Star Trek Voyager book series to follow up on the further adventures of Tom Paris and he simply said "No". I thought that was funny. I would be reading all about my character if I ever got to be in a TV show. At another one I got an autograph by Patrick Stewart as a birthday present. It was a very long lineup and he signed my book and said "Thanks for coming". Kinda lame, but he was quite busy. I also met Marina Sirtis who chatted for a while. She's extremely extroverted and talkative in person. Jonathon Frakes was at another one. He shook my hand and said "Thanks" so again, kinda lame. I also noticed that the whole time Jonathon Frakes was there he was chewing gum, and now I see it in every KZbin video that shows him live. He is a compulsive gum chewer. I also met Chris Sarandan who plays Prince Humperdink in The Princess Bride. It wasn't busy, but our conversation was brief. He seemed pretty pissed off and really not wanting to be there. So again, kinda lame. Jake the Snake as well who was very personable and friendly. Virgil as well shook my hand. Avery Brooks as well. Expensive autograph and he was quite busy but when I told him "The Visitor" was my favorite DS9 episode, it turns out it was his as well so he smiled at me and told me that and asked me where I was from, so I got more conversation time with him than the others. He did a lot of singing in his presentation I went to.

I'm doing a run through on netflix at the moment right after TNG S1-7, and I have to admit I agree. The hit-miss ratio of DS9 is much better than TNG. Don't get me wrong, I LOOOOOVE TNG, but I was surprised how good DS9 is. The writing is very impressive.
@syphe1014 жыл бұрын
@@Mirandorl I disagree 100%. TNG is Gene Roddenberry vision made manifest. It is the archetype of what Star Trek is, not DS9. I found DS9 to be great, but because it had such long-running arches, it didn't have an episodic element that allowed it to tackle hard-hitting metaphysical and even philosophical questions in the same depth as TNG since it was confined to the story arch. Yeah, DS9 had "pale moonlight", and a couple of others like when Sisko is moving through time, seeing jake age, but overall, it came off as a bad cousin of a Battlestar Galactica with major, season-long themes, big battles (whatever happened to 1v1, brinkmanship and so on?) and linear storytelling - (I didnt feel bad or good, or anything when 800M Cardassians died, did you? Or when Star fleet was attacked by the Breen, did you?) Overall, I think if you're into that sort of thing, then DS9 is your show. If you're into Roddenberry's vision of what Star Trek is - the improvement of humanity/what humanity could be - then DS9 isnt your show. (ex. I loved how TNG 's first episode was that they were put on trial by a 5th dimensional being called Q which came to a conclusion at the end of TNG - DS9, on the other hand, started the series with a battle Wolf 359 and ended the series with a battle, Cardassian Prime + religion stuff sprinkled in there. Just seemed....lazy, and inconsequential relative to TNG writing)

Imagine how freaky it would be if you were a crew member and saw everyone carrying on all bright and chipper even though your life could be in danger at any moment, often in terrifying ways. The Cast was Perfect. That's what made it Perfect. TNG was good. But DS9 just had the better Cast.
DS9 characters live with their choices, good or bad. It's what help develops the characters so well and helps us see so many sides of their personalities. Like you said, TNG was good...amazing, IMHO. However, extremely little changed over seven seasons for Crusher, LaForge and Troi. Every DS9 character (even the secondary characters...looking at you Nog & Demar) ends up in a totally different place than they begin. Dax became an entirely new person! "The Sisko" actually became a new lifeform!!! Also, some choices TNG made seemed right at the time (allowing settlers to stay in DMZ), ended up costing The Federation big time (formation of the Marquis terrorist group). Ideals and reality don't even out most of the time. One has to be chosen. DS9 chose reality and benefited greatly. It's the best Trek!

My top two favourite sci-fi shows are Babylon 5 and DS9.
@Kleineganz5 жыл бұрын
Did you know they were related? J. Michael Straczynski originally pitched Babylon 5 to Paramount, and they turned him down - so he eventually went and made the show himself on a budget and got it syndicated through Warner Brothers. However, Paramount took the concept of Babylon 5, changed the story to fit the Star Trek universe, and DS9 was born. It was different enough that J. Michael Straczynski couldn't sue for copyright, but there are plenty of similar elements if you look closely. Both are great shows in their own rights though.

STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE had some of my favorite arcs in *all* of storytelling. Particularly the relationship between Kira (Nana Visitor) and Odo (Rene Auberjonois). 💜

I think Nana must of have had a dance background, always very athletic and fit, and of course a great actor. Jeffery Combs was my favourite character from Enterprise. Deep space Nine had more character and Story development, much more so than any other Trek based series, almost a soap opera with so much story.

Deep Space Nine was the best because it didn't suffer from: 1) the sterility of Next Generation 2) Voyager's nonsense, conflicting, dueling missions of 'Above all, we must get home'... but also 'Let's explore, meet new faces, waste resources for no good reason, enter races, pick fights when we only have one ship...' Not to mention travelling in a straight line home, but still coming across the exact same foes. - Deep Space's epic ongoing story-lines were filled with more character and could be diverted from without diminishing or messing up the bigger picture.

Combs was superb in his many roles as a foil/villain. In a hypothetical S8, I wonder if he would want to be a regular good-guy character or play the occasional adversary.

As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I can say that DS9 was brilliant. I was hooked when it started, and I watched the entire series when it first came out. Since then, I have watched it all through numerous times. I intend to do so again. I love all Star Trek series' , but this would have to be my favorite one. The characters are great, and the story line was brilliantly written.

I was a university student when DS9 premiered. They did a lot of promotion so I watched the first episode with high expectation. Turns out they had tons of commercials and I had trouble connecting to the show. I gave up after about one hour when they started another long commercial. After almost 25 years, I watched it on Netflix and I am hooked!! Always been a Star Trek fan. I loved how the original series had Sulu because I am Japanese. My mom was George Takei's brother's dental clinic patient back then and I was pretty happy about the connection.

Well no other series had concluded at the time. Notice they were referring to the past tense, as in shows that had already completed their run. I know many want to hate the new shows,... but remember, that was the same exact hate that DS9 was getting. And lets also not forget, TNG got that same hate at first too.
@SenileOtaku3 жыл бұрын
@@k1productions87 well, TNG had a few dud episodes, DS9 had fewer duds, but even then they weren't woke crap like Discovery or Picard. But at the time they were made series producers believed that storytelling came *before* whatever message you wanted to present.
@k1productions873 жыл бұрын
@@SenileOtaku Both subjective and incorrect. Message was absolutely paramount (no pun intended) with both TNG and DS9, it just happened to be coupled with more focus on character, the one major flaw I find in Discovery. What I see is too many people who are unable to properly articulate the nuances of storywriting and character development, so instead they cling to buzz words like "woke crap" and "SJW" and so on as if they are some kind of absolutes. But all that does is make one look bitter and out of touch. If one wants to discuss the flaws in plot structure, worldbuilding and character, I am more than happy to join in all day and night, as those are important things that Discovery needs to desperately work on. But when the default position becomes "stop putting race and politics in my Star Trek" it makes one question whether or not the person had even seen Star Trek before. Discover and Picard is no more "woke" than it ever has been. But we weren't hyper sensitive to messages in television in decades past. If Voyage Home were made today, it would be called "environmentalist propaganda". if "The Outcast" (TNG) were made today, it would be called race baiting or some other form of woke or whatever term one wants to use. If "The Last Outpost" (TNG) were made today, it would be called anti-capitalist if not communist propaganda. The list goes on and on. But as a certain song's lyrics say... "it was acceptable in the 80's"
@SenileOtaku3 жыл бұрын
@@k1productions87 My point still stands. Regardless of whatever message an episode was trying to present, the writers at that time understood that you had to have an engaging story around the message, and the story had to be the primary focus. I will definitely say TNG had it's share of preachy, left-leaning stories, but the writing was good enough to make it palpable. No one will get your message if you make something unwatchable, and that's what Hollywood and the BBC have forgotten. No matter, I have plenty of anime to catch up on, I never have to watch Star Trek, Star Wars, MCU or Dr. Who ever again. Oh, and I need to rewatch B5 again, to learn how JMS handled the same sort of story problems I'm having in my own series.

Do you know, I resisted watching DS9 for literally decades because I thought it was a boring show set on a space station. I thought this, not having even watched an episode all the way through. It was only when a friend told me to watch it and persevere with it because it gets really good. So I did and he was right! I love this show! And thanks to Netflix I can go back and watch it again and again. Modern Trek just didn’t cut it for me.
