Taichi Saotome is an onnagata, a man that specializes in playing women's roles. While the form of theater he's in, taishu engeki, doesn't technically require men to play female roles (unlike kabuki, which is strictly men only), it's still pretty common. Historically, Japanese theatrical arts such as noh, kabuki, or bunraku were restricted to men only, so while a woman can play this role, it's not considered strange at all for a man to do it instead. Besides, onnagata are incredibly popular.

うわぁ。一年前のコメントと5年前のコメントにあれですが、めっちゃ分かるしどっちも素敵ですよね。 玉様は圧倒的だしちょっと神秘的で就職先女神みたいな感じですけど、猿之助さんの女形はなんと言うか、存在感もあるんだけどちょっと系統の違う感じで母性を感じます。 最近は若手の女方さんたちも可愛いですからねー。七之助さんは最近大きなお役多いですし、児太郎、米吉、梅丸…etcって感じですよねー。 私は米子贔屓ですが。 将来が楽しみ。もっとグラマラスになっていく気がして。奥さん役とかも板についてきそう。発声も綺麗だし。
