NANCY FAESER: How the German Interior Minister wants to tackle the growing threat
Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser has announced a tightening of gun laws to counter the growing threat of Islamist terror and anti-Semitic crimes in Germany. During a visit to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Faeser pointed to the drastic increase in anti-Semitic incidents, especially since Hamas' terrorist attacks on Israel. In the second quarter of 2023, the police registered 715 anti-Semitic crimes, including 19 violent crimes. There were also over 170 attacks on police officers during demonstrations.
Faeser stressed that the current resources of the security authorities are not sufficient to effectively combat the increasing radicalization, especially on the Internet. She is therefore calling for expanded powers, such as the use of AI-based facial recognition, to better identify terrorist threats. This is particularly important because the authorities often rely on information from abroad. The recently prevented terrorist attack on a concert in Vienna shows that Germany is increasingly in the focus of jihadist groups such as IS and its most dangerous offshoot ISPK. Faeser stressed that the security authorities must continue to take tough action and use all legal instruments to protect the population.
