Ryan Marvel huh? What do you mean its flipped when you watch a previously recorded video? The only time a video is flipped is when you are viewing a front facing preview screen on a camera, or when you are using the front camera on a phone. Otherwise it was a stylistic choice done in post processing. Or, at least in this case it was done as an aesthetic teaching method to allow interaction with the viewer and the board.

The student who taught this to the class called it "Texas" style, having moved from Texas to N. California. Now I'm in my 70's helping teenage grandchildren with their trigonometry at the community college. My memory is not so great anymore and we got stuck on factoring quadratics for about a week. I am so glad I found your excellent video. Everything else I looked at on KZbin fell short of that final Texas method for solving the more complicated problems. You are genius! and I can once again look good for my grandkids.

Thanks so much for sharing this. I've been helping my 15 yr. old son with Algebra 2, and he's currently factoring quadratics. Algebra 2 was the highest level of math I completed in college about 25 years ago (and I haven't used it since), so I've basically been relearning it while I'm helping him out. We were having a really hard time factoring whenever the x^2 had a coefficient and there was no GCF for abc. He had shown me the "magic X" technique for simpler quadratic equations, but didn't know how to apply it for the harder ones like the one you demonstrated. So thanks to your tutorial and a couple of practice problems, we were finally able to nail it. As a GenX parent I can't be more thankful to have virtual tutors like yourself accessible in a moment's notice on KZbin. Back in my day, you were pretty much dead if you didn't understand a math concept/application and 1) your math teacher never explained it clearly and 2) you had nobody in your family that was a math wiz. So thanks a million!

I was given an answer by the instructor that was in essence: "I don't know And it doesn't matter". Well it does matter! When I was at college the way I understood quadratic equations was to visualise them on a graph. I'm sure you all know that y=x^2 graph looks like. It's a simple parabola (v-shape graph) with the lowest point at x=0. In other words, the solution to x^2 is 0, it's the value of x which gives y=0. So, the solution to a more complex equation,such as x^2+4x-12 it is simply saying what are the 2 values x where value of y is 0, i.e. the points along the x-axis where the graph cuts the x-axis. To visualise this, go to www.desmos.com/calculator and enter the quadratic x^2+4x-12 into the left panel and you'd see the parabolic graph where it cuts the x-axis at x=2 and x=-6.

I realised that with this method you always have to simplify the left and the right fraction, even if you have -2/2 you have to write it as -1/1. Otherwise you get a wrong function at the end.

@jonathanfanning95582 жыл бұрын
That x method is terrific, it actually permits you to come up with the answer mentally without even putting to paper. I can't think of any other method that would enable one to mentally factorise a trinomial with a leading co-efficient greater than one.
