Why did she freak out about the thermal goggles? Best I can guess is that she missed them in the other two games?

She missed them in MGS1 and then suffered through a very tedious Psycho Mantis fight without them, partly due to being too stubborn to backtrack for them. Backseaters were extremely annoying about the thermal goggles though, so ever since then it turned into a meme

Yeah, she would have had to reload a much earlier save to be able to get them before the Mantis fight, and chat was even telling her to do that at one point. She ended up ignoring them and beating the fight anyway
