Nanjing Massacre: A story that must never be forgotten

There are stories throughout history that must never be forgotten. Japanese troops captured Nanjing, then China's capital, on Dec. 13, 1937 and started a 40-odd-day slaughter. About 300,000 civilians and unarmed Chinese soldiers were brutally murdered, and over 20,000 women were raped. John Magee, an American missionary, recorded the atrocities of the Japanese army with his 16-mm camera - the only footage documenting the massacre. CCTV interviewed John Magee’s grandson Chris Magee, Japanese professor Hiroshi Tanaka and opera actor Li Shi, who performs in "The Diaries of John Rabe," an opera chronicling the massacre.

As a 3rd generation of Malaysian Chinese, I was always wondering why until today, Chinese kept on producing WW2 movies and dramas. The reason is so simple. As long as the Japanese Government keep hiding the atrocities of WW2 in China, these movies and dramas will be there for years to come. Therefore and unless the Japanese Government tells the truth to their citizens, Chinese will be weary of Japanese wherever they goes.

I think for a long time, the Chinese had PTSD from WW2, not wanting to talk about it for decades. Same with the Korean comfort women. The survivors could only testify more than 50 years later.

As a Japanese person, whose parents are expats and my grandpa who served Japan during WW2, as part of the Imperial Japanese Army during the wars and battle in China. I remember how he spoke fondly of the Chinese people back then till his dying day and spent many of his vacations in China, but I always wondered why he was very silent or didn't speak about the war in China, until I heard of the Nanking Massacre or the Unit 731 and he knew the wrongdoing that was happening in China and serving as the occupying force he witnessed many horrors that were very hard to speak of. Now I understand why he spent many of his vacations in China and traveling many places in China, which many included former battle sites and former occupied parts of China by the IJA, as part of his tribute and paying respect to those who died there. Lastly, I hope there will be a day where we can have true peace and forgive each other and I as a single individual, I'm truly sorry for what happened in Nanjing and to the Chinese people. Xie Xie

Probot2000X do Japanese schools teach the proper history? No. This shows that the Japanese government still denies it. Until the Japanese government starts teaching proper history and the atrocities, the Chinese will never forgive the Japanese. I am an Australian born Chinese. I’m more Australian than Chinese but even for me after learning of all this history, of how japan still denies the massacre of Nanjing and how the youth of japan dont even know of their cultures history, it makes me hate the Japanese. Even the nazis have admired to and apologised to their war crimes.

Actually I don't hate Japanese people, the war is not ordinary people’s decision. and I like Japanese culture, like one piece, like AKB48. But!! if Japan want to get forgiveness from China,Korea and even Philippe, at least Japanese should admit the historical fact.

We, Chinese must forever remember Nanjing massacre till the end of time, if former Japanese PM got the gut to talk about assisting Taiwan in fighting China, then we must keep reminding Japan citizens that the Chinese want Japan to compensate for all sorts of crimes commited by Japanese soldiers for six weeks in Nanjing in 1937. During the occupation, veryday thousands of Chinese citizens young and old were encircled and executed by hundreds of soldiers, young and old Chinese girls were raped and bayoneted to death or used flame throwers to burn them after raping them The blood debt with never be forgotten and those crimes are actually carved in stone at memorial square, this is to remind the next generation of Chinese about those atrocities committed by an inhumane nation and to prevent another similar merciless massacre. .

It shocks me to see that people are still denying this happened. There are literally survivors who have lived to tell the tale. Yes, the cultural revolution in China was bad, but that doesn't justify the suffering of Chinese civilians in this atrocious event . There is no correlation between the two. The only thing is that both should never be repeated. I don't hate normal Japanese civilians, they did not start the war or the unit 731/massacre, but I am disgusted by the insensitive jerks who still deny the suffering of the survivors of this massacre.
@modernnormad7109

The atrocities committed by Unit 731 is too atrocious and inhumane for the Japanese to accept as truth. For they had been whitewashed by their history textbooks since childhood and raised themselves to see themselves as civilized ppl which made it difficult for them to face their inhumane psychopathic uncivilized truth which is very different from heir own perspective of themselves and who they currently are. They do not have the courage to face the truth of what their WWII criminals committed because they had thought of themselves as the most civilized race on earth when truth was the exact opposite in history. I can understand why they cannot instantly accept the crimes of their WWII soldiers. But to deny that such atrocities are committed by them is not acceptable. As such it is important that we must persist with creating mass awareness of this Nanking Massacre and the same atrocities they did in South East Asia to achieve: Acknowledgement by Japan for the atrocious crimes their WWII soldiers and Emperor committed by teaching such facts in their history textbooks! And that their Emperor and political leaders must stop paying homage to those WWII soldiers as war heroes!! They need to be courageous to face the truth!

Do you know part of the famine is caused by US sanctioning China at that time? One of the crucial product is fertilizers which is needed to grow food. Great Leap Forward is working well on the first part but failed on the second part, and is part contributed to Mao's inexperience in dealing with economy and wanting to follow western industrialization. At the same time the death toll was fabricated by US ambassador at that time, which he based it on a math model.

…Nanking should be remembered not only for the number of people slaughtered but for the cruel manner in which many met their deaths. Chinese men were used for bayonet practice and in decapitation contests. An estimated 20,000 - 80,000 Chinese women were raped. Many soldiers went beyond rape to disembowel women, slice off their breasts, and nail them alive to walls. Fathers were forced to rape their daughters, and sons their mothers, as other family members watched. Not only did live burials, castration, the carving of organs, and the roasting of people become routine, but more diabolical tortures were practiced, such as hanging people by their tongues on iron hooks or burying people to their waists and watching them get torn apart by German shepherds. So sickening was the spectacle that even Nazis in the city were horrified, one proclaiming the massacre to be the work of bestial machinery.--Iris Chang

At first I thought "they should be forced to apologize" but then...no. Force is the very lesson we don't want to take from Nanking. A forced apology would mean nothing. To freely and sincerely apologize is to finally accept their historical racism and to recognise finally the same humanity in the Chinese people as they see in themselves. They tried to dehumanise the Chinese at Nanking. But ended up dehumanising only themselves.

The 'crimes against humanity' that the Japanese carried out in China (AND many other occupied countries by them including neighbouring Korea) should NEVER be forgotten.👀 Certain Japanese have through the decades since, made it all too clear their 'denial' of the truth that has, time after time been PROVEN beyond doubt of their crimes. When you see Japanese honour their war dead at a Shinto shrine which also includes those guilty of such horrors, it is clear just how some believe that what they did was something to honour them for? 😐War criminals who butchered, tortured, murdered thousands of men, women, children and babies. Who had competitions to see how many they could behead. The numbers buried ALIVE? 😐The Americans who allowed war crimes criminals to go free, who gave them immunity against being tried for those crimes? FACT. The war criminals who ended up in Japanese government under American rule (and after the Americans left) who were NOT prevented by the Americans from being there? Says it all. 😑Chinese must NEVER ever forget AND NEVER forgive. Anyone who thinks that todays generation of Japanese are any different is living a lie. The Japanese people are a CONFORMIST nation who I genuinely believe feel little or no real shame. You have to remember that the true horrors of war crimes committed by Japan were never discussed (NOR was the war itself) in Japanese schools, school text books et. It was deliberately kept from them OR edited to leave out a sizeable amount of the truth. 👀Ex war criminal families who through so called 'connections' took over big business, political positions of power and more so that they could ensure dominance over their people, its culture, beliefs and POWER to DENY the truth with punishment and consequences for those who spoke up for it.

3) Here's Mao Zedong telling the Prime Minister of Japan to take back his apology "(Japan) doesn't have to say sorry, you had contributed towards China, why? Because had Imperial Japan did not start the war of invasion, how could we communist became mighty powerful? How could we stage the coup d'état? How could we defeat Chiang Kai Shek? How are we going to pay back you guys? No, we do not want your war reparations!" -Mao Zedong greeting Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei in Nanjing, 1972 Here's Mao praising Japan's contribution to his war effort "Those Japanese were real good. Without Japanese's help, China's [Communist] revolution would not have suceeded. I said the same thing to a Japanese, a capitalist, by the name of nanxiang sanlang(?).He kept on saying: 'Sorry, we did invade China' I said to him: 'Don't say that, on the contrary, Japanese helped us (Communist) in a big way', especially Japanese warlords and the Japanese Emperor."

Operation Ichi-Go is an operation conducted by the Japanese Army on the Chinese mainland from April 17th to December 10th, 1944 during the Sino-Japanese War. It was the last major offensive of the Japanese Army, which caused the National Revolutionary Army to be hit hard and affected during the Chinese Civil War. However, on the other hand, the United States is also mediating the conclusion of the Double Tenth Agreement with Chiang Kai-shek in order to avoid a civil war. According to a study by Barbara W. Tuchman, the results of this operation had a more significant impact on the subsequent war situation than the Japanese had imagined, and had a decisive impact on Japan's fate. According to it, Franklin Roosevelt has consistently strongly trusted and supported Chiang Kai-shek since the beginning of the war, and encouraged him in the war against Japan so that he would not drop out of the Allies in a single peace with Japan during the Cairo Conference. However, he said that he changed his mind because the front of Chiang Kai-shek collapsed due to this operation. In fact, Chiang Kai-shek has not been invited to important Allied conferences ("Yalta Conference" and "Potsdam Conference") since then. According to the Stilwell document, Roosevelt said, "Can China win?" Stilwell said, "There is no choice but to eliminate Chiang Kai-shek." During the 1944 Hengyang battle, he could not sleep at night and twice. He says he thought about suicide. The American side also planned to assassinate Chiang Kai-shek, and three methods of "poisoning", "aircraft incident", and "pretending to be suicide" were considered, but it was canceled in 1944 due to changes in the international situation such as Burma. The successor that the United States envisioned is Sun Fountain. As Roosevelt's Chief of Staff George Marshall and General Joseph Stilwell have long insisted, Chiang Kai-shek's army is actually a demoralized and corrupt organization that does not form an army. It became clear that he had no desire or ability to fight with the United States and other Allied forces. As a result, President Roosevelt changed the scenario of the operation against Japan from the conventional bombing of Japan and other countries from the air bases of mainland China to the one that MacArthur and others claimed to occupy the islands of the Pacific Ocean one after another. China was dismissed at the Yalta Conference, and the Allied nation's footsteps were disturbed, with angry Chiang Kai-shek presenting a peace plan to Japan against the will of the United States. In the Japan-US negotiations, Japan's allegations were peace by the confluence of Wang Jingwei of the Nanjing government and Chiang Kai-shek of the Chongqing government, and a proposal for defense from communism jointly by Japan and China. The US allegation was the withdrawal of Japanese troops from China, admitting only the Chongqing government. The negotiations broke down and the United States stopped oil, resulting in a war between Japan and the United States. The Japanese Operation Ichi-Go attack left the National Revolutionary Army with 750,000 casualties. This caused the Kuomintang to lose to the Communist Party in the civil war. China would not have been dominated by the dictatorship Communist Party if it had made peace with Japan and cooperated in protecting it from communism.

① After the Opium War of 1842, China (Qing) continued to trade opium with Britain (Indian opium), the United States (Turkish opium), and France (Indochina opium). The United States has made huge fortunes from this. For example, the media such as NY Times in the United States and famous universities such as Yale University could be established. ② Chiang Kai-shek. Mrs. Soong Mei-ling was the daughter of the Zhejiang conglomerate (the third daughter, the second daughter, Mrs. Sun Yat-sen), and supported wealthy people and wealthy citizens. In January 1924, the First United Front was established under the guidance of the Communist International. Chiang Kai-shek found that the true purpose of the Communist Party in the First United Front was to infiltrate the Communist Party members inside the Kuomintang and defeat the Kuomintang from inside. He said, "The Japanese army is like a skin disease. However, the Communist Party is a heart disease. " (So-called, Chinese Civil War, 1927 to 1937) The Kuomintang received military support from Nazi Germany (from May 1933), possessed modern weapons, and received modern military training. Since Germany cannot manufacture weapons domestically, it is manufactured in the Czech Republic and exported to China (manufacturing costs are an investment from Wall Street in the United States). ③Mao Zedong-The Communist Party is a group like the Mafia and the gangsters, and since it does not have modern weapons, it did terrorism and spying (for example, the Second Shanghai Incident that was triggered by Zhang Zhizhong in August 1937). Under the direction of the Communist International (that is, the Soviet Union), he engaged in activities to engage Japan and the Kuomintang, and to expand anti-Japanese sentiment in China. Because The Chinese Communist Party was defeated by the Kuomintang, it abandoned Ruijin in Jiangxi Province and fled to Yan'an in Shaanxi Province (Long March, 1934 to 1936). ④ Soviet Union. There were enemy nations, Germany and Japan, on both sides of the country, and he was afraid that he would be caught and shot. He instructed the Mao Zedong Communist Party to "Fight the Japanese army and the Kuomintang Army and separate the Japanese army from the Soviet Union." In the Xi'an Incident (December 1936), Chang Hsueh-li caught Chiang Kai-shek. Zhou Enlai acted as an intermediary, the representative of the Chinese Communist Party, who received a command from the Communist International, and instructed Chang Hsueh-li and others to fight the Japanese army in collaboration with the Communist Party instead of killing the captured Chiang Kai-shek. Chiang Kai-shek's wife, Soong Mei-ling, acted as a negotiator and agreed to the proposal (So-called, Second United Front). As a result, members of the Communist Party entered the Kuomintang, expanded anti-Japanese sentiment, created an opportunity for a battle between Japan and the Kuomintang, and spy on the front. The Marco Polo Bridge Incident (July 1937), which started the Sino-Japanese War, is said to be the work of a Communist Party spy. Even though it was a second United Front, the Chinese Communist Party itself retreated to the mountains (Yan'an, Shaanxi Province, close to the Soviet Union) and preserved its power by educating members of the Communist Party and agriculture such as leaf tobacco cultivation. The Chinese Communist Party has not had a head-on collision with the Japanese army. ⑤ At the same time, in Japan, Asahi Shimbun reporter Hotsumi Ozaki and other Comintern spies started the Sino-Japanese War. For example, in the case of Hotsumi Ozaki, he developed a hard-line argument against China and a forecast of the war situation on the Asahi Shimbun. He was informed by spies from Europe, the United States, China, and the Soviet Union, so the prediction of the war situation was correct. So he was selected as the brain of the Konoe Cabinet because of the accuracy of his prediction and became a member of the breakfast party. The information on the Japanese government and the military obtained at this breakfast party was lost to the Communist International. ⑥ Richard Sorge. A Communist spy (German, German embassy staff in Japan) who contacted Hotsumi Ozaki and others. He entered and exited the German Embassy in Japan as a self-proclaimed newspaper correspondent and became an embassy member. In order to separate Japan from the Soviet Union, he worked to move the Japanese troops south and gathered information on the start of the German-Soviet war. As he sent information to the Soviet Union that Japan would reduce troops near the Soviet border, Soviet troops deployed Far Eastern troops to the Moscow defense to prepare for the battle with Germany. The United States was supporting the Soviet Union. Japan's southward advance developed into a confrontation with the United States and Britain. He is a spy that Russian Putin respects. ⑦ Nanjing (civilian massacre) case. Since Chiang Kai-shek's Kuomintang was provided with Nazi Germany's weapons and military training, Japan signed with Germany to stop Germany's support for the Kuomintang. (⇒ John Rabe, a witness to the so-called Nanjing Massacre, is a Siemens employee and pleads with Hitler that "Japan is cruel, so I want you to continue exporting weapons." Chiang Kai-shek want US President Roosevelt to help POOR CHINA because Japanese troops are doing violent acts in mainland China. His wife, Song Mi-age, made a similar plea in a lecture in the United States. That is, the so-called Nanjing Massacre (December 1937). an advertisement for POOR CHINA SUPPORT REQUEST) ⑧ Other poor china plans (plans to advertise in the United States and appeal for China's support = "Japanese troops are cruel") ・ Destruction of the Yellow River embankment by Chiang Kai-shek (June 1938, hundreds of thousands of victims) Chiang Kai-shek tried to make it the work of the Japanese army, but it was discovered by a European newspaper reporter. Japanese troops rescued and fed Chinese refugees, and assisted in the restoration of the Yellow River embankment. ・Destruction of the Yangtze River embankment by Chiang Kai-shek (September 1938) ・Arson of Changsha (a city with a population of 500,000) by Chiang Kai-shek (midnight, November 1938) It is said to stop the advance of the Japanese army. ・ Chongqing bombing (December 1938-September 1941) Chiang Kai-shek built a military factory in the basement of the city, and the Japanese army bombed the factory. International law distinguishes between military and private facilities and prohibits bombing of private facilities, but in this case, the US media dispatched to Chongqing did not matter. ⑨ US President Roosevelt tried to make up for the failure of the New Deal policy with trade with China (he was a Chinese enthusiast because his ancestors made huge fortunes in the opium trade) → Manchuria is exclusively for opium. Initially, US President Roosevelt supported China in the form of volunteers called AVG (American Volunteer Group). ⑩ On July 23, 1941, the president signed a bombing plan for the mainland of Japan called JB.NO.355. ⇒ It was planned to depart from Singapore base in November, but because France lost to Germany, the bomber was sent to the European front in order not to isolate Britain. July 25, 1941 Freezing of Japanese assets in the United States July 28, Japanese troops stationed in Southern French Indochina August 1st, oil exports to Japan were totally banned Attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 ⑪ Tokyo Tribunal. For the United States, it was a problem whether the United States had obeyed international law. For example, during the Nanjing case (1937.12) and the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan obeyed international law and did not bomb private facilities, hospital ships, etc. The United States carried out civilian attacks ignoring international law, such as urban bombing in Japan (dropping atomic bombs, indiscriminate bombing), attacks on Japanese hospital ships, and shootings on farmers from airplanes. Therefore, even if he wins the war, he is worried that he will lose the trial, and he brought up the story of "Nanjing (civilian) massacre" to overcome this situation. The Chongqing bombing was a bombing of a military facility and was not brought to the Tokyo Tribunal.

Nanjing's massacre is an awful part of asian history to never forget. And if japenese, american and england alt-right deny this (of course), it's always a real damage to see the actual japenese government in a "tidy zone". Not able to admit this : Japan has conolonized and made atrocities, the worst of his history, in China and Korea. 300k deaths, 20k rapes (as common statistics like in this documentary) : never forget and stop this hypocrisy is the goal, not the ideal, not an utopy. Admit this real facts. To involve the mentalities for less racism Japan-China and Japan-South Korea. (No talking about refugees people from North Koreah, uh. :/) Personally I prefer the peace. :(

Nankings feudalist rooted Japanese brutality in the 20th century won't be easily repeated like a justifying nazi ideology of the holocaust. The reason why people remember the holocaust more than other war crimes like Nanking is because it could repeat itsself through a modern dangerous ideology that is popular amongst the working people. Even today it can convince ordinary people to repeat and glorify the holocaust. As in fact the main objective of the ideology. Nanking is the product of long feudal war traditions in japan, not only Japan but In other parts of asia like the mongolia. genghis khan killing 1/5 of the northern Chinese population. (No one even focuses on genghis khans atrocities on China amongst Chinese education anymore and I think if Nanking is to remembered for the brutal mass killing, than genghis khans invasions should be counted along as way more devastating versions in Chinese historybooks) This doesn't have popular appeal in modern society to do such terrible things. Japanese soldiers today will not repeat these crimes again in such complete brutal fashion in the 21st century. It's outdated and barbaric. and the Japanese people today do not think raping or beheading Chinese people is some justified bullshit to their codes . and it can't be brainwashed to justify it by Nationalists in japan. They do not look for these crimes as their main objective to repeat. It's not a planned and orchestrated war crime at the desire of fulfilling the purpose of Japanese ultra nationalism. The point I try to make is why the holocaust is exceptional because it's an ideological atrocity. Many countless evil atrocities happened in history but will not be easily repeated if there is no reason to see value in it. Neonazism is still rampant in Europe, it's an opposition and some people believe in it. Japanese nationalists do not seek " justice " by glorify war and rape on their neighbors.

4) -Mao Zedong's conversation with American journalist Edgar Snow, 1970 Mao Zedong's communists were on the retreat across China from the Republic of China until Japan's timely intervention saved him. The Republic of China's military suffered over 3 million casualties from their best trained and equipped units fighting Japan, as well as over 20 million civilian deaths. The Republic of China was obligated (even though Chiang Kai Shek stalled as long as he could as he considered other Chinese greater threats than Japan) to defend her civilians against invaders which meant pitched battles in urban environments against the brunt of Japanese mechanized forces, while Mao Zedong could afford to retreat into the countryside and fight a guerrilla war ambushing small groups of Japanese soldiers. By the time the Japanese Empire was defeated, Mao had regained his strength (thousands of Japanese who surrendered were even recruited to Mao's forces) and finished off the weakened Republic.

Mao Zedong carved on the monument " more than 300 thousands Communist Chinese were massacred by Ching Kai-shek" as below in Chinese -死難烈士万歳 国民党政府在雨花台曽経屠殺了三十万共産党烈士 - The number of victims was 300 thousand is quite the same of the present so called the fake and fabricated Nanking Massacre Museum in Nanking now. In the Nanjing Massacre, the execution of 10,000 to 30,000 Chinese soldiers is the predominant theory, and the massacre of 300,000 civilians is exaggerated. Bayonet stabs and machine guns are more cruel methods of executing Chinese prisoners of war than rifles. The theory of Japanese scholars is that less than 10,000 people, or around 30,000 people, are influential.

The commission consists, in addition to Mr.Tao Hsi-shan, of two vice-chair men and eight members, none of whom figures in the Chinese "Who's Who." With. similar bodies in Peiping, Shansi and Honan, there are now four new administrations to supplement that in Hopei. Mr.Tao Hsi-shan's manifesto attacks the Chinese Government for "leading the people into Indescribable misery and distress by decades of anti-Japanism and pro-Communism." H. J. Timperley was an adviser of the International Information Division of the Central Propaganda Bureau of the Nationalist Party of Chiang Kai-shek from 1939 to April 1941. Harold John Timperley(1898-1954,Australian, newspaperman of Menchester Guardian)who wrote the book titled "What War Means "(1938) based on the Nanking incident in 1937 is already proved to have served for the Chinese Ministry Information(Chiang-Kai-Shek)with monthly salary of 1,000 US Dollars, as an advisor and got big money to write that book for a propaganda against Japan. Namely the Nanking incident was completely a FAKE story and mere propaganda. (The West Australian, December 14,1954 , The Evening Independent, November 12, 1941)
