A few years late, but it's all about sound selection. You'll notice that he has a lot of instruments that add only add small details, but fundamentally, there's very ltitle bass taking up headroom in the break, with only a single unlayered piano being consistently present. Picking the right sounds at the right time (i.e. mixing in 4D instead of 3D) is a large part of why his mixes sounds so clean./ I wouldn't be surprised if there is barely any mixing involved by the end of his sound design.
