The NanoVNA does many things. Two of which are testing coax cables for loss and length. Jim W6LG shows how to do both in this first video about the NanoVNA. In a subsequent video, Jim will show how the NanoVNA can be used to check antennas for resonance, impedance and reactance. The software that Jim uses is NanoVNA Saver. That software is free and easy to use.
Here is the link to the software that I used: github.com/mihtjel/nanovna-saver

Thank you! New Doctor wants new tests. With the virus in N. Cal going high, I am objecting to more of the same tests. Turns out, they moved ill prisoners from So. Cal to N. Cal. Those prisoners, infected hundreds and flooded the hospitals. Many will die in the next few months. It is a mess. Some prisoners were guilty of not much and will never get out. Its a game changer for ham radio operators!! Its very usable for antenna tuning, cable loss measurements. For the money its hard to beat. You even get a „cal kit“. The load is not the best, but works ok. I would not use it for professional work, but for a ham radio operator this is good enough and almost a must have. I have access to really expensive analyzers, at least 40-50 dB more expensive. I would not use this for Professional work, but home I dont bother to to bring the „real stuff“ along anymore. Btw the guy who made the software is not from Africa, but Sweden.

Thanks Angel Help. I have been pretty much consumed with getting an antenna up and working. I have the boom in place and hope to mount 3 elements tomorrow. The heat has been a "killer'. Temps in the rangelof 95 to 100 with high humidity have really slowed me. The boom I had ended up being 18 feet. I had a couple at 26 foot long but I knew that would be pushing it a bit too far. I had 2 booms that were 14 feet. That seemed too short for 20 meters. I am making the antenna for gain and not front to back. Thanks again for the kind words and support. 73, Jim W6LG

I had a NanoVNA-H (the small 2.8" screen one like you have) and now the NanoVNA-F (larger 4.3" screen and higher frequency) and love them! As you said, the free software and these little devices are so useful, especially if you make your own antennas. For doing a 49:1 EFHW or even tuning up a 6BTV vertical, you can in a single sweep see the entire frequency range and know if you need to trim/tune your antenna for any number of bands. I have a $300 RigExpert AA-55 Zoom and while that is very nice, it doesn't do UHF/VHF. To do that, I would have had to drop $625. For $50 or $110, you can get a device that actually does more. I've also taken my NanoVNA's in to the office and compared their readings to a $30,000 Agilent NA and while not exact, it certainly is "Close enough for ham work". 73 W9HJ

@@ham-radio I got mine off eBay. Supplied is in Kentucky so you don't have to wait forever for shipping. Most of the sites say 50kHz to 1000MHz, but there is a new firmware update that allows it to work up to 1.5GHz. Aside from the larger screen, it also has a metal body that totally encloses the unit all the way around and the SMA connectors aren't "floating" like on it's smaller brother, they are attached to the metal body. www.ebay.com/itm/Handheld-HF-VHF-UHF-NanoVNA-F-Vector-Network-Analyzer-Kit-50KHz-1000MHz-4-3-LCD/283687994590

I am trying but not being 100% successful in getting videos made. Ray, I fell! That fall about a 6 or 7 weeks ago still hurts. I went to the doctor and had xrays done. I broke 4 ribs, 3 on the right and 1 on the left. Tonight, it still hurts. The xrays were done 3 weeks after the fall and there was some healing on 3 of the ribs. On top of all of that, the first guy to die from the virus was a neighbor. That brought a helicopter, 6 police cars and reporters to our neighborhood. I have stayed at the house in self imposed quarantine. With emphysema (never smoked), that virus could really cause some problems. I do have a new oxygen machine. You bet Mike. How are you and Sissy? I think back to your visit and wished that we could do that again some day. The move has frankly been a struggle. My health decline has accellerated and projects take forever. I motorized that tubular tower and will have a max height of about 13 meters. There is a motor for laying it down, extending the square tube and for rotating. City code enforcement officer visited a neighboring ham because he was in excess of the 9 meter height restriction but just little. That other ham came by for a visit and is just super nice. We had a great conversation. He has the same tower and is one of about 3 guys that I know of on HF who have some kind of beam. I have built the elements for a copy of a Hygain 203ba. The CEO does not approve and hence the slow down. It may start out as 2 elements and grow when no one is looking. Ampzilla is in pieces. The three other amps seem to be fine. One is a GS35b, two 3-500z with 3.5kv and the 500 watt Elecraft. Thanks Mike and 73 from Rocklin California where it will be 100F today. Let's see 1.8 plus 32F...so about 33C.

Jim W6LG , the layout was effectively the same as G3TXQ used on his website. IE for example if the balun is wound with coax the extremities of the braid are treated as a two terminal device. Each end of this “inductor” are then connected between the ports of the VNA as though you were sweeping a filter. G3TXQ then calculated out the resistive and reactive components separating them with a little vector maths, I didn’t. I purely looked at the attenuation between the two ports. FWIW I believe that winding them with coax leads to high capacitance between windings, I am now winding them with PTFE insulated wire in a broadly bifilar style. My measurements using FT240-31 cores have been very interesting. Kind regards David

It is my opinion that it does not matter. In some situations where you have an antenna on a single band and you want to know what is happening at the feed point, then velocity factor times the wavelength (or half) is helpful. With that antenna, it would be impossible to find a length that matches all of the possible frequencies or bands. Use the best silver plated Teflon insulated connectors that crimp onto the LMR400. Do follow the instructions from the manufacturer (I've met then a few times). Do use a choke. Ferrite beads should be fine. 73, Jim W6LG

@@ham-radio The place is looking great! I've learned so much from your videos and you inspired me to get my tech license, so thanks a lot for that! I'm also looking forward to a video on different cable types, particularly wondering your opinion on using RG11 (75 Ohm cable) as a cost save. I've looked at many loss charts and it seems decent for HF. I've read that it's not a big deal there, with dipoles and all, just tweak the antenna length for good swr on your frequency - how about on 2m feeding a copper jpole? I'll set it up this weekend, maybe I"ll let you know how it goes! Thanks!

Generally good video. Only one very important technical comment. The loss you're measuring in this instance is not transmission loss, but return loss. You're only conducting an S11 measurement. To measure transmission loss you need to do an S21 measurement, ie. both ends of the cable under test connected to both Nano ports,

I received one from Amazon for about $70. It would not charge. I filled out the return information on Amazon, printed a free shipping label and in about 3-4 days I had the replacement. I've so busy getting ready for Quartzfest that I have not had time to play with it. I'll take it to Quartzfest to play with it there. I'll load the pc software now! That flooring has been debated here in my house for several days. I am about to just paint the floor and call it done. I want to get the desks into that room and get back on the air with a dipole in the backyard. It has been a year and very much want to get things going again and have some fun. I met some very nice guys from this area that meet at a local guys lab. A lab that has everything you could ever want for testing anything. The owner is super nice and has invited me to return anytime to do a video. A bunch of cables are in the room and lead to the attic. From there, it will take a few days to get the other end to the master bedroom closet and then out the back wall at the A/C compressor. From there, I have not figured out. Probably just a simple dipole for starts. How's your XYL feeling. I am wearing a holter monitor and I hate this thing. It hurts and is in the way. Keep in touch and lets get together for a voice QSO on another means of communication. 73 and thanks again for your contribution to amateur radio. Jim in Rocklin on a postage stamp

If nothing else to say hi to your viewers, can share some photos of any progress. If you need labor, I’m sure a shout out to the community here would be responded to. I’m not the closest here in Texas, but I’m willing too. Anyone would enjoy the oppty to work and learn from the process. Hi Tom, Thank you. Oh, I did respond to you but did it in the wrong way for KZbin. Hence, it went nowhere. Thanks for the offer. Here's where the process is as of tonight. Walls are painted, electrical outlets are finished with cover plates, furniture is in the room, much of the equipment is on the ham desk, video editing equipment is on the other desk, 4 coax cables are installed in the wall and terminate in the attic near the rear wall of the house, rotator cables are not finished but are roughed in, ditto the antenna switches, 12 volt power supplies are in place with several devices not yet connected, 5 volt power supply is operation and connected to an "on the air" sign, the solid core door is in place but the digital lock does not work, 8 security cameras on 2 systems are functioning but need alignment, six digital montiors are functioning, 2 of the 4 computer systems are working and that's about it. Still lots to do. A friend from my the area where I used to live has been helping me. I had horrible reactions to two medications that put me down for a few days. One was Amoxicillin. I had severe reaction to it. Tom that is more than you wanted to know but with your kind offer, I wanted you to know where things stand. It has been down to freezing here at night and cold during the day. Tomorrow when my XYL is not looking, I will drill some holes in the rear wall of the house and put in bulkhead coax connectors. Then with any luck, I can connect some dipole antennas in the very small backyard. Boy I sure miss the acreage of the old house. Take care my friend and thanks so much for the offer. I have been in Texas a few times and was surprised at the kindness and courtesy extended to a boy from California. 73, Jim in Rocklin, CA

The vswr tell us how we transfer efficiently our energy to the antenna ONLY ! Judging an antenna only with the criterias explained in your nice video , appear like a short path to the reality . I think that the role of expert and great comunicator person like you is doing exactly the opposite ... That explaining that the vswr , reactance, etc...
