I don't know how are they going to pull it off. It is quite hefty game on PCVR as is and still in Early Access, but I played it through and through due to how intensive Souls Like it is. The game is massive hogger though. Just to add real life fitness and upper body speed does matter in this game. Wide swings with swords do more damage and also aiming for weak spots. You been hitting a lot of armor in the video. The first boss for example is faster to take down by stabbing him in the face.

Game looks like it needs a ton of work. Not having realistic combat with weapon parrying in VR is insane. Outside of the negative though the actual art style and voice acting were pretty good, weapon crafting looks cool, and the magic system has a ton of potential. Hopefully the devs turn this into something amazing.

To be fair making any sort of half decent melee combat is a really difficult thing to get right in VR (which is why most VR games don't do much or any of this at all) & they are still in early access. But yeah it needs some work.

Realistic combat would be a bit janky when combined with the hp system they’re using for enemies. They definitely need to give enemy mobs some sort of reaction to getting hit, though, because right now fighting them looks incredibly unengaging.

Super commendable that the devs let you give your uncesored opinion. I think that despite the games faults (combat issues) what has been showcased here is that the game has a solid foundation and also that the development team very likely cares for the product and consumer, which is a very good sign.

ngl collisions on the surrounding area like at 10:13 is amazing. Love when medieval fighting games force you to take the environment into account. I knew some demo for a game that was just a fighting arena, and it was rather impressive to see some players (including myself) die because of hitting a wall or pillar that would have dealt a critical blow. Curious how any dev could solve the double sword spam... or just flailing about like when you blocked with a shield and swatted an enemy with your sword... I suppose making critical hits would be a start, like at 13:00 where a good and "strong" (Skyrim has a variable for VR you can change to make you need to swing faster to "hit". I enabled it because as holding a weapon out, using smooth turn, and slightly moving the hand always triggered an attack) across the neck beheads the ghoul. Configured right, it would push players to try and fight normally, as it a battle could result in a single, quick, and precise swing or 5-10 second spam as an alternative.
@aghawkz Жыл бұрын
Something I've seen a VR game(s?) do (can't remember which off the top of my head) is make it so that the in-game weapons have weight, slowness, and inertia to them. You could swing your real-life hand back and forth as fast as possible and it'd work fairly well for daggers, but with heavier weapons, they'd barely move before you were already swinging the other way again. Combine that with a way to turn speed (combined with localised damage (i.e. hitting armoured parts vs unarmoured)) into actual damage dealt, and it means a light tap will barely even register as damaging, while a slow, controlled swing will be the most effective way to play.

The enemies being hard might be user error here. I only remember Nano using swords, spears and arrows (at least in the video) all of which are piercing or slashing. Most of the enemies he is fighting are wearing chainmail or plate armor which protect against specifically those two things. I don't know if this game is coded like that but theoretically a blunt weapon like a mace would have been much more effective against most of the enemies he was fighting. Maybe he tried and we didn't see in the video but since we didn't, who knows. It would be a shame if it wasn't coded like that.
@BamirengVR Жыл бұрын
If that's the case then it would be much worse. It would force you to play blunt weapons and let's be honest 9/10 people will choose a sword over a mace...
@Endless_Marine Жыл бұрын
@@BamirengVR It would only force you to use blunt weapons against certain enemy types and only "force" you in the sense of being 100% efficient. The other areas in the roadmap look to have different enemies and armor so there is variety and as long as the majority of common enemies have unarmored spots on them like arms and face that take normal slashing and pierce, accommodating the use of any weapon as a primary source to an extent, with the aforementioned in mind then there is no problem with making armor work properly. To say that the game would be worse by making armor work properly is just flat out wrong and exactly what is wrong with the majority of gamers these days. If you choose to ignore a games mechanics you deserve to have a bad time! I'm sick of this era of gamers playing games wrong then complaining that this or that needs changed, buffed, nerfed or removed because they are actively playing wrong or ignoring mechanics. I've seen games I love with great mechanics or depth get changed or have those elements entirely removed to something so boring and simple, losing all uniqueness because players refuse to learn how to play it. Some devs listen to feedback from people who make comments like yours. People who refuse to use a blunt weapon against armor then complain they don't do damage. People who refuse to use armor themselves because they don't like how it looks then complain the game is too hard and they keep getting one shot. People who choose to bang a sword against a rock golem because "swords are cool, maces dumb" and say armor and damage type mechanics should not exist. Bronze rank players who don't understand literally anything about the game or balance and think they should work on the balance team. And people who intentionally play it like it is xyz game because they want it to be xyz game then having a bad experience because it simply isn't! Good games get changed and ruined by devs hoping it will sell better by listening to these people and destroy them for no reason when the real solution is play correctly or play something else if that is too hard.
@BamirengVR Жыл бұрын
@@Endless_Marine You are entitled to your own opinion I am merely saying that the vast majority of people want a game to be fun. And it's more fun to use a sword in a medieval fantasy world compared to bonking an enemy on the head until your arms gets tired. The premise of the game is to beat the enemies, so the weapons should be balanced and not force you to use a specific type. This is in no way a skill issue problem infact using a blunt weapon to bash heads in is far easier then exploiting enemy movements to and use openings to one's advantage. Hard games are very enticing and fun but the physics, weapon behavior and enemy-ai make the game look tedious instead of engaging and fun.
@Endless_Marine Жыл бұрын
@@BamirengVR You are making two entirely different arguments as well as going against your own point. Saying that mechanics make a game unfun and limiting and people should be able to do whatever they want and it be viable then in the same comment saying mechanics like dodging and exploiting openings are a better system than just bashing enemies, both of which would be limiting gameplay mechanics. A mechanic that if ignored in favor of playing however someone wanted to would be the thing that directly leads to just standing here bashing something a hundred times. Completely contradicting yourself. Secondly having weak spots and unarmored parts on most armored enemies so sword an spear use is viable against most things, excluding fully armored bosses, etc. is exactly what I described in my comment proving a proper armor system isn't bad for the game. And yes refusing to play a game correctly or learn it's mechanics are both "skill issues" as you put it, and even more sad that the mechanic being ignored is so simple to understand. So I don't really see what you are trying to argue!
@BamirengVR Жыл бұрын
@@Endless_Marine I am saying that the current gameplay looks shit and needs less armor and enemies that don't need 10 hits to take down. I don't know what you don't understand. And I honestly do not care very much. I made my points if you can't comprehend that the gameplay is not satisfying then just be happy as ignorance is bliss. The Combat/Enemy System in Battle Talent is years ahead of this one.(And is developed by a single person) If the devs of this game would rather focus on world design then gameplay loop they can do that. Obviously many people do not care about a proper combat system.

I think there should be weak points in the armor that if you attack bypasses armor for a critical hit. (ie A stab in the eye should be an instant kill)I think there should be armor damage and weapons that can destroy armor. As well as weapon wear, maintenance, and armor maintenance. And two story lines that make you either a good guy (kill zombies to save princess peach) or bad guy (necromancer with a lust for power like bowser)

I personally really, really enjoy this game. I like a bit of a workout so I really don’t mind it making me swing my arm. Blade and Sorcery does the same thing. In Blade and Sorcery I added mods that make it harder to kill enemies, even with stabs other than headshots so this was right up my ally. Parrying does work in this game but I have to agree that when it comes to blocking with a weapon rather than a shield it’s pretty finicky. Sometimes with the heavy axe guy I’ll block and his axe will go right through the shield and me and won’t do any damage but also will just ignore my block. Regardless of that, with how fun and good it is already in early access? I am fucking pumped.

I think combat is tough because, while Dark Souls and all FEEL epic because you're knocking the big hulking thing to his knees and defeating giants, but realistic melee combat just IS much slower by nature. You said your shoulder hurt, try doing all that you did with a 2kg dumbell and that's basically what using a sword would actually be like, so your shoulders would naturally be ripped as hell. However, I do agree that the weightiness of combat feels off, even if you're hitting an armored skeleton, it's still a rotting corpse underneath and SHOULD recoil when its bones are shattered by your sword swing. But maybe you can get that with like the larger boss weapons or something, idk

Flailing away at armored foes *should* take awhile. That said, the game should also provide the ability to take aimed blows (stabs or shots or whatever) at unarmored areas, so as to reward creative play. Maybe targeting limbs allows dismemberment, and taking out legs allows for mobility kills? Also, consider allowing different damage types to affect different creatures more or less well, maybe? Stabbing and slashing a rock-monster probably shouldn't do much, but impact damage from a hammer should work much better. Thoughtful choices about weapons and tactics, depending upon the type of foe faced, would make the game more immersive, I'd think.

Honestly I think the game hellsplit: arena is an amazing example of good vr melee combat. Some say blade and sorcery is best but I disagree. It's def up there but not number 1. The way enemies attack in blade and sorcery is so sporadic and unnatural imo. The decapitation, severing of limbs and the torso is at least 2.5x as smooth as blade and sorcery. Only problem is when it comes to armor, which they have made, I guess realistic? Using swords, parrying and flicking the enemies heads off is very satisfying, but armor renders sharp weapons nearly useless. Some heavier ones work but blunt weapons are 400% more effective, often easily crushing their heads in one swoop it it's heavy enough.

Definitely a thumbs up from me for the devs accepting criticism of their early access game, it's weird how insecure some devs can be when they themselves openly admit the game isn't finished and formally launched. But in VR, from watching you, it really seems like combat is literally move and swing and if they are making this for VR, may want to make it a bit more fun cause otherwise you're putting effort into killing them that is far more than just "mashing" buttons.
