Del hasn't survived a single one of my playthroughs. Marcus has already lost his mom, then Carlos, then Tai, Dom, his dad, and his wife. Im not taking out his son. I thought that was an extremely weak point in the franchise. Never should have been written that way.

Marcus’ dad dies in Gears 3 after blowing up the lambent and locust with a big pulse weapon. Gears 5 has you learning more about where the locust came from and finding out that Reyna (Kait’s mother) is Queen Myrrah’s daughter. So Reyna was kidnapped in Gears 4 by the Swarm and is now their new leader and they’re also trying to get Kait to join them in 5. Clearly, she resists them.

Gears 5 holds up on its own; and co-op is a blast. You'll know pretty much everything you need to know about the story if you've played GoW1 or 2, anyway.

Gears 5 is pretty much a reboot of gears 4 and better in every possible way. I would try finding a way to play 3 or watch a playthrough online, and watching a catch up/ everything you need to know before playing gears 5 type video and then play GoW 5. Or just jump straight into it. Either way you will have a good time.

Gears 4 was one of the worst games I've ever played, so I had no hope for Gears 5 and avoided playing it for a long time. Turns out it is actually amazing and very inline with the story telling and gameplay of the first three titles while also being completely new. I was impressed. It's a genuinely good game. Fun, action packed and heartbreaking.
