I saw her concert last night in San Diego. I have also seen her in Glendale Oct 22. The Gigi from last night is not the same Gigi from what I might call the "LA Arquero" or her classic period. Whether by choice or necessity, this version of Gigi is far less focused on the music and considerably more visually oriented. The beautiful timber of her classic voice seems to have largely abandoned her, replaced now with much less vocally demanding dance numbers. The covers of Karen Carpenter, Frank Sinatra, and the other classics upon which her fame was built no longer appear in her performance. There are still flash's of the Old Gigi. Her cover of Whitney Houston's "Saving all my love" was still powerful and resonant. Her rendition of "Never Enough" still shines, but much of her performance is reminiscent of a DJ trying to exalt the crowd to party and sing along. She is much more "edgy" now, clad in leather and chains her onstage presence no longer holds the charm and freshness of the previous Gigi. Gigi is still a talented performer, she just might not be what you were expecting.
