For a non-native, though, there are so many factors that can get in your head. 'W' as a vowel, trying to figure out what the heck to do in your mouth to produce "ll" sound, not to mention the length. I've tried to teach myself to say it. I doubt I could ever get it all out before a native figured out, "oh, my god, he's trying to pronounce that word, let me interrupt him."

The name broken into syllables: Llan-fair-pwll-gwyn-gyll-go-ge-rych-wyrn-dro-bwll-llan-ty-si-li-o-go-go-goch In contrast to English practice, "w" and "y" are considered vowel letters in Welsh along with "a", "e", "i", "o" and "u". The vowel "w" is found in the third syllable (pwll) and the eleventh syllable (bwll). The vowel "y" is found in the fourth syllable (gwyn), fifth syllable (gyll), eighth syllable (rych), ninth syllable (wyrn), and thirteenth syllable (ty). The most challenging sound is the Welsh double "L" (LL). In phonology, it is called a voiceless alveolar lateral fricative. · Its manner of articulation is fricative, which means it is produced by constricting air flow through a narrow channel at the place of articulation, causing turbulence. · Its place of articulation is alveolar, which means it is articulated with either the tip or the blade of the tongue at the alveolar ridge. This ridge is right behind the inside of the top front teeth where you make the "L", "D", and "T" sound. · Its phonation is voiceless, which means it is produced without vibrations of the vocal cords. · It is an oral consonant, which means air is allowed to escape through the mouth only. · It is a lateral consonant, which means it is produced by directing the air stream over the sides of the tongue, rather than down the middle. This is the most difficult feature of the sound because it is not found in English. · The airstream mechanism is pulmonic, which means it is articulated by pushing air solely with the lungs and diaphragm, as in most sounds.

He said that he could pronounce the words, though, so I asked, "can you say the name of that town ..." "llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch" he interrupted without missing a beat or even looking up.
