It's a very good demonstration of the difference in integrity, that you thought of the boat trick and went "Nah, let's not", while they found it, immediately started using it, and taunted you about it. You're on the right track. A combined protection level of 16 (prot 4 on all 4 pieces) is the vanilla survival max, but combined prot 20 is the actual max. Having prot 100 on all 4 pieces is equivalent to having prot 5 on all 4. Similarly, you could have 1 piece with prot 20 and 0 prot on the rest and it would still be the same.
