Why is everybody talking about the lower key indeed??? She sings like a rock!! "Not in form..." Cant imagine what form she wouldnt be in then? You? Brava, La Horne! She attacks the darker chesty tones more then anyone I ever heard. 5 stars!!!!

If she's singing the version with the Viardot cadenza, it was revised for Contralto. Gluck's original Italian version was for castrato and the revised version in French was for a high tenor. The Berlioz 1859 version in 4 acts was specifically written for Contralto Pauline Viardot and she composed the final cadenza

When Gluck wasn't "knocking" or "reforming" virtuoso singing & actually created virtuoso arias, he was one of the best ! This aria is magnificent but the powerful recitative that comes before ... is one of his best dramatic introductions to highly technical vocalizing --- imho.

honestly, i dont mind the lower key at all. as long as it sounds good. and it does. i prefer a lower key over the original key squealed and forced out like the late gruberova did. same with sutherland and very late semiramide arias. she sung very well. just not as crazy high as when she was young. marilyn horne was a superb singer with supreme technique. opera fans really have a fetish for singing high and higher. opera and recital singing is not about singing as high as possible. its about much more.

Addio, addio, o miei sospiri, Away with mourning and crying, Han speme i miei desiri; Lo, on the gods relying; Per lei soffrir vo' tutto, For her all risks defying, Ed ogni duolo sfidar. I boldly go…I go on my quest. did they make the key lower here?
@deborahdey200310 жыл бұрын
Yes lower key . probably baroque pitch , but we are talking about it because we , other mezzos , are singing it in the higher key , and it's ..well ....higher
@baritonebynight2 жыл бұрын
LOL "we....other mezzos sing it higher". My guess is that you and these "other mezzos" will never sing this with orchestra with an audience that spends big bucks to see you.

it could just be pitched lower. Baroque pitching is usually a whole tone lower.

@@baritonebynight I didn't say she couldn't sing it in whatever key she wants to. Do you just troll everyone on the internet?
@davidmuller99384 жыл бұрын
she wasn't a mezzo, she was a light contralto with big range (that's why it was hard to classify her voice and started as a strained soprano), this key is perfect for her and for the role which is a male role.
@baritonebynight2 жыл бұрын
First of all, Ms. Horne is to spoken of in this present tense. She is no longer singing but still active as a teacher and is very much still with us at the age of 88. Second, she knows more about her own voice than anyone else in the world. She is a mezzo sorprano...and there is nothing light about her instrument...but I'm guessing you have never heard her live. People like you....non singers....seem to be obsessed with trying to classify a voice. Not sure why non singers get so wrapped up in it....while they have no technical knowledge of how the voice works or how it can classified.

I don't know anyone who sings it better than Ms. Horne. As far as lowering the key, who cares? If its all about high notes to you.....there is a name for people like you. Musician ain't one of them.

don´t get me wrong i ADORE Jackie but this is like one whole key (or more?) lower! I have a recording of this aria in its original key sung by her and THAT is absolute perfection! you should really listen to it! the record is called "JUST FOR THE RECORD" :P
