How to Update Firmware for Most Canon (6D/7D)

Thanks for sharing this video. I successfully updated firmware on my Canon EOS 7D Mk II camera following your instructions. In a first step I put the firmware file (in my case it was the 7D200113.FIR) inside the" DCIM "folder of the SD Memory Card and it didn't work. After that I repeated the procedure moving the .FIR file directly inside the SD MMC main folder (as shown carefully watching the video) and not more in any sub-folder. The upgrade was correctly accomplished. Again thank you and I wish you an Happy New Year.😀

@@juanito225 Turn the camera on. Look at the screen on the back of your 6dMk2. Press the "menu" button (above the screen to the left). Navigate to the wrench icon on the screen. Go to panel five on the wrench screen. Your firmware is listed at the bottom of panel 5. If your firmware is ver 1.0.5, you are up to date. If not you need to download the updated firmware from Canon and install it. Hope this helps. Stay safe.

Take the one file with ending extension labeled “.fir” and place it in the card’s the root director. Do not put it in a folder! After you have verified that the update is complete again reformat the card to assure the card’s no longer needed firmware file has been removed.

I have followed exactly as you said but when i go to firmware update on camera it say Card containing firmware required. I have copied the file into the card not in a folder inside the card.

Thank you for the guide on doing a firmware update. I am woefully behind and was wondering if I can skip interim updates and go directly to the current or if I have to do each update independently? I have a Canon 6D and am on firmware v 1.1.4. Current one listed is 1.1.9.

Yes, you can (and should) skip right to the latest update. Just remember to have that fully charged battery and be careful!

Lol you were actually one update ahead of me already two years ago when you posted this. It is now 2022 and I just updated from firmware version 1.1.3 to the latest version of 1.1.9. All is good :)

I just did a search on the Canon site and couldn't find it. Maybe the camera is just too old. You can contact Canon to see if they will still support it.

I update my firmware fairly often. It's maintenance for your camera.

Try it again with a newly formatted SD card. Sometimes it inadvertently gets saved to a folder. It needs to be in the root directory.

Maybe you can help. I have been using Magic Lantern for a few years. I just had my 60 D repaired and Canon updated my software from version 1.1.1 to version 1.1.2. That version does not recognize the Magic Lantern. There is a fix in the Magic Lantern Forum www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=19417 but it is beyond my expertise. There are some great features that I am missing like the built in intervalometer and the focusing aid. I never experienced any harm to my camera. Can anyone help.

Taking a quick look at that fix, I wouldn't attempt it. Chance of bricking my camera vs. buying an under $20 intervalometer. Hmmm.
