Austria was more successful in the Neapolitan War than any wars against Napoleonic France: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Tolentino And even after the Napoleonic Wars, although the Austrian army horribly underfunded & suffered defeats, there was still some success: Austria's & Britain's navies saved the Ottomans against Egypt in the Second Ottoman-Egyptian War, Radetzky defeated the Italians in 1848, Austria & Prussia together defeated a Danish army in 1864 (while Prussia was pushed back at Mysunde in the early war days, Austria beat the Danes at Sankelmark at the same time), then challenged and lost to Prussia (also against France in 1859) at Königgrätz due the horribly army funding and inferior weapons, but at the same time won an excellent naval victory at Lissa against a better Italian navy and also pushed the superior Italians back at Custoza (1866), and invaded Bosnia. Of course Austria's military record wasn't as good as Prussia's one, but they still enjoyed some success.

Archduke Charles had a Sun Tzu like approach to war, more of a Go type thinking as opposed to Chess. And with a very pacifist-like shade to it. In his military doctrine he emphasizes winning through demoralising the enemy by outmaneuvering and securing a more strategically favourable position from where to negotiate the enemy's surrender and if necessary the inflicting of just the right amount of damage to hammer home the point. His philosophy was perhaps too passive for Napoleonic times but very viable in modern warfare.
@kondor99999 Жыл бұрын
No, that sort of strategy was common in the period prior to Napoleon. It’s why the Duke of Brunswick withdrew at Valmy (for instance). Napoleon played for keeps. His enemies didn’t. Now, they are buried in obscurity. And he is immortal.

France was at her most powerful in 1809 too, it was foolish to sack Charles, he was the first to best Napoleon at his height in a fairly even battle.

No doubt Charles was an excellent commander but he definitely had it easier (in command) than Wellington did during his campaigns. When I was a Junior in High School, for my history class project I was assigned to write a report on Napoleon's military campaigns. At first I thought, "Cool! A report on 2 or 3 battles and I can wrap it up with Waterloo." Once I found out the number and scope of battles I had to research and write about, I started to hate Napoleon as much as the Austrians did.

@Alex The Awsome In Europe, there have been 125 major wars, of which France has participated in 50. This is more than both Austria and England, at 47 and 43 respectively. Since 387 BC, they have fought in 169 battles - and they have won 110, drawing 10, losing 49. This is more than any other European country - in fact, it is more than any other country on the planet, regardless of continent. Whilst the number of wars they have participated in and won will obviously be higher as they have been around longer than most other countries, one cannot deny that to win so many wars, a country must be good at the art of war. Throughout history, France has generally had the largest army, the best-equipped army, and the most innovative army. Many words used nowadays when discussing war and strategy come from French: army, artillery, captain, cavalry, charge, espionage, general, lieutenant, lance, marines, manoeuvre, military, mine, naval, parachute, pilot, platoon, regiment, soldier and trench all come from French. Let it not be forgotten that the French achieved a feat nobody could ever repeat: they conquered Britain. Sir William Napier commented on the French: It is well known with what gallantry the officers lead and with what vehemence the troops follow.

I feel like Napoleon is so interesting among famous generals because he faced legitimate hardship as opposed to many of the other military geniuses in history who either just so outclassed their enemies that they never faced a legitimate threat or something stopped them before they ever did. For example Alexander the Great came up against if I remember correctly two generals even approaching his caliber king porus and the Greek mercenary general whose name I forgot, so he never really met someone who could match him on top of the fact that he didn’t live long enough to experience the problems of a stagnating empire. Actually reminds me a lot of the man who reformed the Roman army many of his victories came from his mastery of logistics and military reform but he suffered setback after setback and experienced hardship at the hands of a strong adversary Sulla Or Caesar who faced more resistance but still his history is one primarily of success because his enemies just weren’t if the caliber required and he others that were generally were on his side until he died before they could turn on him.

I agree with your general statement in 1st para, but not with the others. Caesar faced talented commanders like Pompey and Labienus, the only reason we don't remember them as such is because of Caesar's and later, Octavian's propaganda. Marius reformed an outdated army, which was loosing wars after wars against Germanics and North Africans(Jugurthine), and turned it into a world class force. Just because Marius is slightly overrated doesn't mean that we should underrate him either. I could agree with you on Alexander though. His Campaign was completely reckless, he was just lucky enough that most Persians haven't taken Greeks that seriously until that point.
