So, it’s been twenty years since the release of Jared Hess’ breakout debut comedy- Napoleon Dynamite. On paper, this is a movie about a dorky high-school kid in a rural Idaho town who helps his best friend run for class president while looking for love and dealing with his creepy uncle. But, if I believed that was all this movie was, I’d be talking about something else- but here we are.
Nacho Libre is the story of Ignacio- a catholic monk friar who feeds the hungry by day, and moonlights as a flamboyant luchador called Nacho Libre. The film highlights Nacho’s duality between two life paths that he’s equally devoted to and packs in scene-to-scene slapstick comedy, toilet humor, and countless kicks in the ass. I should also mention that it’s loosely based on the true story of a Mexican friar who masqueraded around town as a wrestler to raise money for his church... But I believe there’s more to it than that.
It’s a movie that was co-written and directed by the same indie hero that brought us Napoleon Dynamite and stars Jack Black during the prime of his comedy career. This is a movie that was destined for dollars. But today’s episode is not about how much money the movie raked in, but instead it’s about reading between the lines and looking for the deeper meaning in this otherwise silly and feel-good film. If you’re in the mood to have some laughs and watch a dude on the internet try to assign meaning to the cinematic treasure that is Nacho Libre- then make sure you grab a snack, grab a drink, and Supplex that like button- because today we’re going to figure out once and for all- what's Nacho Libre REALLY about?

To hear you explain your different takes on this movie as a kid and then as an adult was priceless. Oh, and I am writing this in the middle of your video, the movie made 115 times what they spent on it. So this hard to watch, because a lot of time it's so excruciating, but often hopeful film makes it multi-dimensional.

15:41 Unless you say it later, it seems as if he rekindles things with a past love. I think him returning to his van out in the prairie and not pretending to be more than he is, as we follow the pattern you pointed out, led to a reward. EDIT - Yes, it was addressed! I always took it as a past love (maybe they are in the middle of a divorce which is why he doesn't have a home) who went out to begin making amends. They give each other knowing looks.

I always feel a little sad when I watch Napoleon Dynamite. While he is nerdy and such and being authentic, I often times feel he is this way because he is one of the poorest members of his community. While major communities shun the poor or pretend they don’t exist, you can’t do that in a small community. Napoleon’s personality is a defense mechanism, mainly because his economic place in society is clearly visible. He wears his clothes not because he is behind, but because it’s at the thrift store. I kinda identified with him in this way, because I didn’t have a car myself in high school and didn’t have a very extensive wardrobe. But speaking on Hess’ religion, he did put together a rather interesting documentary series on Netflix called Murder Among the Mormons. Either way, pretty good video!

the claim about Kim finally being himself in the end is a bit bonkers. imho. and its implied that Uncle Rico finds himself an asian gf at the end. so i don't disagree that the moral of the film is to be yourself and then you'll find those that like you for who you are, but i think this film also provides some uplifting coverage that everyone finds their match. also, i dont really think that uncle rico is creepy. i think he is also awkward but in a different way. almost everyone in this feel is depicted like they are somewhere on the spectrum.

These two movies were never funny, and mark the decline of comedy as a whole in cinema. Wit and Edge were forsaken and replaced by immasculation and social ineptitude. Think I'm wrong? How many classic comedies can you name before these films? How many can you name after (with the exception of Apatow movies, whom absolutely embraced the old model)
