Most of the army died during the Summer advance not the winter retreat. By disease mostly.

He did not " flee ", He had to go back to Paris for urgent political reasons.He passed the command of the army over to Murat ( HE fled ) which is the prerogative of a head of state.

@@irenehartlmayr8369 interesting narrative, except that when he "left because of urgent political matters" by crossing the icy river by ferry that specially built for him, his army ran after him and froze to death.

@@mrbibis7229 Wrong.He waited till the army was over the river and THEN left,from a place called Smorgoni.The army was already frozen by then,after crossing the Berezina it was not so bad anymore.The army collected in Vilnius and did NOT " run after him ". He did not cross the Berezina in a ferry " that was specially built for him " , he crossed using one of the bridges that were built for ALL and everybody. The urgent political matters were a conspiracy in Paris and he only left for Paris AFTER the rest of the army was safely on the other side of the Berezina. You should do some proper reading and research before writing!
