Summary: As a Man Thinketh is an essay by James Allen, originally self-published in 1903. The book explores the idea that a person's thoughts have a powerful influence on their circumstances and experiences in life. The central premise of the book is that our thoughts shape our character and determine the quality of our lives. Allen argues that by controlling our thoughts and focusing on positive, uplifting ideas, we can transform our lives and achieve success and happiness. The book also discusses the importance of taking responsibility for our thoughts and actions, and the role that self-discipline and determination play in achieving our goals.
Born in England 1864, James Allens father was struggling in the textiles business, his father traveled to New York City to seek employment when Allen was 15 years old. Sadly, he was robbed and murdered just days after his arrival. Allen was forced to leave school and worked to help support the household. Holding onto the intelectual practice of reading and writing that his father instilled in him, Allen studied his fathers books on ethics, religion and philosophy during his lunch breaks and well into the evenings. Feeling stuck and without direction, he was striving to find purpose and meaning for life. In 1889, Allen found new employment outside of the factory working as a secretary and continued to contemplate the world religions and it became clear to him that the underlying message was self-development and inner refinement. He began writing his own thoughts and in 1903, Allen wrote As a Man Thinketh to encapsulate the idea that our thoughts are causative and that thought is the cause of oneself. The title may have been inspired by the proverb, “As he thinketh in his heart, so is he.”
James Allen writes from personal life experiences of mental building himself up and out of despair and the struggle he experienced as a youth. From the publication of this book forward he would publish a book a year until his death in 1912. This book would go on to inspire Napoleon Hill, Dale Carnegie, Marxus Garvey, and many others. By directing our thoughts toward greatness and achieving personal goals, he teaches that we don’t attract what we want so much as we attract what we are.
As James Allen wrote himself, "This little volume (the result of meditation and experience) is not intended as an exhaustive treatise on the much-written-upon subject of the power of thought. It is suggestive rather than explanatory, its object being to stimulate men and women to the discovery and perception of the truth that “They themselves are makers of themselves” by virtue of the thoughts which they choose and encourage; that mind is the master weaver, both of the inner garment of character and the outer garment of circumstance, and that, as they may have hitherto woven in ignorance and pain they may now weave in enlightenment and happiness."

I don't even know where to begin. I stumbled upon this video without searching anything specific. I had been praying for God to show me how to get myself back on the right path after undergoing an intense spiritual journey. I prayed for a way in which I could live sustainably without having hurt corrupt my mind anymore. Then this book comes up. My life is changed and I can barely believe how amazing God is in how He answers our prayers and never forsakes us. This is my cherry on top and green light to now live. To live and breathe again. Thank you Jesus! To God be the glory!!!

Age 62, divorced after 20-years. My life has been a constant mess, a lot of trauma as as kid that I'm just now waking up to how it had adversely affected my life decisions... felt helpless most my life. I now realize how I created faulty thinking leading to poor circumstances. I've been working these principles and am starting to see changes. One thing I did that has been very positive, is working out, dropping fat and looking tones. This transfers to other areas of my life and provides tangible evidence that I am changing. Yet at times, I start crying... not out of self-pity, but I think that as I sluff off past thoughts, my soul is relieved? I don't know.

I found it going through some old stored books a couple of years ago and read it again, as I have periodically through the years. Thanks for the reading.

Nailed it. Soul searching, self reflection, introspection. It is precisely where true wisdom and clarity can be found. It is where we can discover our true selves, it is also where we can find that connection with God. To feel his presence, to be filled with a state of bliss, to truly know for yourself that he is real. It is the only evidence you will need to truly know of his existence.

In my opinion, this is one of the most IMPORTANT and valuable books ever written. Its principles are UNIVERSAL!! No matter your culture, creed, religion, race, ethnicity the principles can be applied to radically change ones life towards abundance. I would advise that if a man has access to ONLY 3 books to read and apply to his journey, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND him to read "As A Man Thinketh", " Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill" and "The Bible". And more than just read them but take from those books the principles that MOST RESONATE with him and APPLY THEM to his journey and measure the difference over a period of time. Thank you for uploading this great book and the great audio. Be Elite Today People!

Once you clear yourself of the fear and traumas the suffering disappears. You naturally live in love naturally have pure thoughts and you understand the divine. As soon as I read this book the first time, i busted up my built in correction system, took my mind by the balls and Forever asked myself empowering productive questions to make my mind, soul, body and life top notch. My mind came up with all the answers or I researched and made it happen! AND.. it becomes a positive snowball effect!! I also did have to seek professional help to be able to let go of some deamons and dysfunction from childhood that was causing problems with my stamina and self worth.. in order to let NOTHING hold me back!! I listened to As a Man Thinketh today. Must have read and listened to it 100 times over the past 3 years. There is a part that I like that states circumstance does not shape the man, it reveals him to himself. Turns out James Allen took this line from Epictetus, a stoic philosopher. Up until today, I had believed it to mean that events/challenges/environment do not create a person, but rather that person was always lying dormant within. The circumstance merely brought the person into one’s awareness. Put differently, a person’s mettle is not created by circumstance, it was always there and the circumstance was the chisel that brought it out. Then it dawned on me. That's not what it means at all. Circumstances are created by who we are, which is shaped by what we think about. This revelation would not have come to me without repetition.

I listened to this 3 times. Today was the third time. After noticing the author reached out to the reader, I felt like something awakened me inside my heart. Broke a tear or 2. After getting done with my lunch, I opened a fortune cookie. It read this: "you will be given new confidence by an old mentor." I then clipped the fortune to my goal card to look back at daily when I read my goals to myself. That right there tells me that I am on the right track. If you happened to listen to this book and didn't get what the writings meant, I implore you to restart the video and listen to the writings again. Everyone walks the path to a specific goal as I am doing right now. Use what you learn from this, and others to achieve whatever you desire. Good luck, and good fortune everyone! 😊

I am sure you have noticed in your life, two kinds of people - those who talk about what they will do and those who surprise you with what they have done. And it makes sense. A seed can only become a flower if it is covered with soil and hidden from view. If the gardener were to unearth the seed to show and tell guests, "this seed will be a flower" - a seed it will always be.
