he (Napoleon) probably made 2 errors in addition of known ones (attacking Russia and the Iberia peninsula war). Not making Austria pay an high enough price for their participation in wars against him each time and not dismembering Prussia. There was no way Prussia would accept being relegated like that and Austria had to be taught to stop going to war against him... with Prussia gone (replaced by a few duchies governed by trusted peoples or something like that) and Austria properly chastised, he wouldn't have to do his adventure in Russia and simply could have waited for them in Poland or close, solving most of the logistical nightmare. Let's not forget that Britain was financially on their last leg, in debts to pay for the bribing and financing of each coalitions

1) 80 percent of the "French" soldiers invading Russia in 1812 died before the first snow fell. Blaming defeat on "General Winter" is only a popular myth. 2) That tactic of scorched earth was actually seen before - when Charles XII. of Sweden invaded Russia and was finally defeated at Poltava. Napoleon knew about that ill-fated campaign and the reasons why it failed. He studied it intensly! And Napoleon also had faced guerilla-war in Spain. 3) That retreat would have been far easier if Napoleon had not waited far too long at Moscow because of wishful thinking.

Napoleon was trapped in Poland. During the invasion, the western lands of the Russian Empire were locally owned by Polish Catholic nobles with an oppressed Orthodox peasant population. But the Poles were Napoleon's allies. Previously, the French had created quite progressive orders, but now they could not, since the liberation of the peasants and the redistribution of land went against their allies, the Poles. Further, the supply of the Napoleonic army went without long supply lines, but literally on the ground. The lands of central Russia and Belarus are quite poor and the French literally ate up the local population. As a result, the local peasantry, the place of the progressive French revolution, was met by locusts that devoured everything and at the same time supported the direct oppressors. If the French Republic had invaded with the Jacobites, then of course it is still unknown who the peasants were for. But in the case of Napoleon, this resulted in a people's war that destroyed the Grand army.

But in both cases the Russian front was where the fighting really happened. Yes the UK helped subsidising the conflicts, but it barely helped the actual military effort in comparison. Its not Britain which cooks the plan, Britain finances it, its the one that are doing the decisive battles which decides, hence France fell to the Coalition and Russia and Austria the 2 main powers who wanted France to survive relatively intact to keep balance made it happen. Hence Germany fell to the USSR first, having lost the vast majority of their army on the eastern front while the West truly had it easy in comparison

@@Khalid-Ibn-Al-Walid Napoleon was the most progressive ruler at that time. There is even a recording of a speech where Stalin laughs at Hitler, who compares himself to Napoleon. Stalin notes that Napoleon was a revolutionary, while Hitler was a reactionary - Napoleon brought freedom, progress and development, while Hitler brought colonization, slavery and enslavement. After Napoleon's "attack" on Russia (which was provoked by Russia's non-compliance with the embargo against England), the Russian peasantry began to hope for the abolition of slavery. And after the officers returned from Paris, they wanted to make the same reforms in the Russian Empire. This led to the Decembrist uprising, which Lenin called the first bell of the Great Russian October Revolution, which would take place in 1917. In other words, Napoleon influenced the emergence of the Soviet Union, showed that there could be a more just world.

@@rp9408 ok there was a British contingent at Leipzig (not a huge one) for a start. Secondly if you include the Hannoverians (who were ruled by George 3rd/4th too) then there were 41 thousand British troops at Waterloo. Oh and the Nassau and Brunswickers were armed by the British too.. Without Britain staying in the war there simply wouldnt have been anything for Prussia, Russia etc to join. France would have had time to stabilise her conquests and they would have had a fait accompli. And without British cash they could neither feed, supply, arm or maintain in the field any army for long.

@@yc2673 You're confusing the Angevin empire and the Hundred Years war. The personal union that could have happened between Henry V of England and the daughter of the French king, during the 100 Years War, doesn't really has a name. The Angevin empire, a name made up by historian to describe the collective territories of the Angevin/Plantagenet ruler (a personal union, those territories were still separate, just under the same dude), happened a long time before the 100 Years War, it was in the 1200s. And wasn't earned through war, but mariages and diplomacy. "Angevin" is a term that comes from the city of Angers in France, the home city of the Plantagenet dynasty, originally counts of Anjou. They will become in a short time also duke of Normandy, then duke of Aquitaine, then king of England, then duke of Brittany. They weren't really "anglicized" at that point in history. Actually, Henry V of England two centuries later will be the first Plantagenet who has English as his native language.

With now knowing that numbers i doubt that Napoleon was that tactical genius. May be the beginning. But later he had almost double.the amount of soldiers like his opponents. And see what happens when he had fewer because he screwed up his campagain in Russia. He got quite beaten up also in other combat fields.

no, the soldier count is of every soldier on every front, not every soldier napoleon led personally, the armies that he did lead personally did win dozens of battles and usually they were outnumbered, he won 56 battles over all, which is the most out of any military general ever.
