If anyone ever wondered about the meaning of this song, the song says "it seem like you were born from an orange". Orange in old times was a symbol of royalty, power and richness. The song continues "i wasn't born from an orange, my mother gave birth to me behind a mountain" meaning that the girl despite her unnatural beauty was born in poverty and harsh conditions. The later part "with white bread and red wine" is somewhat patriotic as red and white are the colors of croatian crest. So the song is basically about a girl being raised in poverty, but being raised properly and to be modest and moral, with a bit of patriotic touch.

I think you are partially right, as far as I know the etymology of the expression "born for the mountain" in our folklore means those who are of fairy descent. This is later confirmed in the song when she thanks the mentioned Katarina for raising her as a fairy. This process was much more expensive and more demanding than feeding an ordinary child who eats much less and has a less demanding diet. I'm pretty sure that the song is dedicated to a small fairy that was thrown by bura-wind from Velebit mount into the Adriatic Sea

@@PoljicaTV I always understood that the lyrics meant "Za goru me mat' moja rodila" with 'za' meaning 'iza' like "behind the mountain" as the girl was born out of wedlock. Pair that with her ginger hair (often connected to witchcraft in that time period), it resulted in her being thrown into the sea. "bura mi je zibaljka bila, zibljuc me je na moru spavala" Meaning she was washed around the sea, where she was caught by sailors who brought her to Katarina Kosaca which at that point would be in a monastery. She was raised in the monastery by Katarina "s bilim kruhom i crljenim vinom" Meaning "with white bread and red wine" alluding to a strong catholic upbringing as those symbols are intensely present in catholicism.

My ancestors are from Croatia and I still have family there that I've sadly never met before. My great granny lived to be in her 90s and she had an accent and talked of her "mother land" and I want to visit so so so so so much. I want to know and learn all I can of the old ways. I don't think he is trying to erase anything and just loves Slavs in general, Croatians included... but I guess it depends on how you see it, because I am Czech and wouldn't feel offended to be called Slav as we are a big and culturally rich family of people... sure you are including other Slavic nations, BUT Croatia is part of it... to erase Croatia you would need to say something like "Spanish to Serbian" or something... that is what I think at least

@@vaclavkropac I don't get offended when I'm called Slavic, so I don't think it's that. Unfortunately, Croatian culture was often marginalized and Croatia literally had to fight for freedom. So 'Slavic' is not a problem, but other factors were at play in history. I don't think that xghostx3159 had bad intentions, by the way, rather making a compliment.

There's no such thing as 1 old Croatian. I am Ikavian speaker, I wish that was our standard, but the reality is Croatia is diverse and has many different dialects, štokavian/ijekavian was selected politically in Yugoslavia because it was the most intelligible to other nations. My Father was from Krk and I grew up listening to domači music but don’t recall any sounding so eclectic! This sounds more primal yet uplifting with the added flute. The only thing it’s missing is bass humming or throat singing like the mongols do!
