Narcolepsy (Sleep Disorder) | Causes, Pathophysiology, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment
Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder affecting rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. There are two types of Narcolepsy, Types 1 and 2. The cause of Narcolepsy is not entirely known; however, it is believed to be due to autoimmune activation and subsequent destruction of hypocretin (orexin) neurons in the hypothalamus. In this lesson, we discuss the risk factors (including related genes and conditions), along with the signs and symptoms, how Narcolepsy is diagnosed and how it is treated by clinicians.

My father had narcolepsy. He used to fall asleep while driving, especially on the freeway. He'd have to pull over and take a nap. My mother didn't drive, but knew the signs. He, also, used to collapse when he got one over on us kids, like when he won a game or played tricks on us. His legs would collapse under him as he was smiling or laughing at us. He was such a fantastic father. I miss him.😞😇😞🙏💝 Both my parents were terrific. 😇😇🙏🙏💝💝😞

I was diagnosed with narcolepsy following a sleep study. Sleep paralysis, hallucinations, everything. Falling asleep driving. I tried to be quiet about it because I was afraid I would lose my drivers license. Falling asleep suddenly and not being able to stop it. It caused havoc at work, and the worst part has been the complete and total lack of tolerance. "You keep quitting your jobs," said my brother. "I never quit. I am fired and told not to come back." I had a prescription but it kept me awake all the time. However, if I have to go on a long trip I take it to prevent falling asleep while driving.

@@Starseed243 Methamphetamine. I only take it in an emergency, like if I was unable to sleep all night and have to drive, to make sure I don't fall asleep driving. It really keeps me awake at night, but it does a great job of keeping me awake during the day. I don't have the level of problems I used to have since being on the ketogenic diet. It's probably been years since I had sleep paralysis. Good luck to you.

i suppose that it's too much powerful, you could try an other medications that allow you to sleep at night at least. plus if the medication it's too much potent that gives you insomnia it doesn't make sense because if you don't sleep at night you will be even more sleepier the day after. balance is needed

My dad has diagnosed narcolepsy. When he did his sleep study like 20-25ish years ago, he entered REM in less than 5 minutes. I feel as if I have mild narcolepsy because Im always tired. I could nap for 4 or 5 hours and wake up and within an hour I want to sleep again. I think I would have type 2 narcolepsy though. No cataplexy that I've noticed.

I fall asleep suddenly while watching television or sitting in front of the computer. This has been happening for a few years now. I don't have this problem when standing up or driving. It does get worse though after a long trip as i am more likely to fall asleep while watching TV or computer after taking a long trip.

Just a question about sleep disorder in children, I was watching a y tube video about 2 school age young boys that do not sleep at all day or night and only eat raw meat chicken or beef the father show one of his kids eating raw chicken. Is this ever met you in you career or have you ever studied anything like this . The boys looks normal but not sure if they are able to communicate or use language. I can link the video here but not sure if I am allowed to do so . Doctors in this country( Egypt) do not know the cause and can't offer treatment. Thanks for opinion if you have one to offer.

Can someone just be sleep deprived from another condition and get diagnosed with type 2? Woudnt you have to rule everything out there that creates fatigue?

Yes but narcolepsy is soooo different, a different sensation. I have been diagnosed with anxiety, depression and PTSD from military service. This has resulted in Fibromyalgia, chronic pain and chronic fatigue syndrome (all diagnosed). I recently went for a sleep study and finally got diagnosed with Narcolepsy, excessive day time sleepiness, sleep apnoea and bruxism. I have struggled for 20 years since leaving the military and it has taken that long to put the pieces together.

lol after getting into my 3rd accident while driving on the hwy i found the secret to nonpharm management nicotine and red chilli flakes. yeah kind of dumb but nicotine is well established to increase sleep latency by quite a bit (usually a bad thing in insomnia), and chilli flakes is basically nociception. when you can find adderall at a pharmacy (nation wide shortage atm), taking it with l-tyrosine helps a lot. also yohimbine OTC's but thats kinda off label. my theory is that it maybe helps with alpha/beta activity balance (kind of the exact opposite of like how if you give a beta blocker to someone with acute methamph. tox u make hypertensive crisis worse.) I wish insurance was more lax with the lysine bonded amphet. (vyvance) and the provigil derivates... also, more frequent and smaller dosing of IR adderall seems better imo, maybe thats just me... not as fun as the XR i hear

I was diagnosed with narcolepsy without cataplexy when I was around 34. I can't drive on the highway and I can only drive very short distances. I sleep 9-10 hours a night and take three naps a day. I go from awake to sleep within seconds and it's very embarrassing and people don't understand that im not napping because I'm lazy, my brain just feels like it shuts off quickly and another weird thing is that a lot of times I go from awake to sleep within seconds and am already dreaming.

1. Former pro-xer here. I got narcolepsy from my Tdap dooster*. I was unable to lift my head for more than three hours per day. It was terrifying. The risks associated with needle juice must be reassessed. I cannot believe I must use code words to avoid social media company persecution. 2. Consuming carbohydrates can cause sleep attacks. Not just refined sugar. Fasting is beneficial. However, it's not easy, is it? 3. I expect narcolepsy cases to rise soon due to C0v1d and its needle juice. 4. One solution is to stop using needle juice frivolously. I'm certain that a great number of cases are caused by needle juice. I think Dtap as a child also affected me negatively. Was a sleepy kid. 5. Modafinil almost killed me (SJS).

@@kaycartier2245 I'll try and give you an answer! In my experience, not really, not even close to the cardio intensity, of what one may find from the equivalence of wakefulness found from that of caffeine, yohimbine, ephedrine and the like spectrum of compounds. Understand that I'm not talking about milligram to milligram equivalence here, but rather, the amount required to be in the same ballpark as far as perceived cognition, inception, wakefulness, and alertness factors between those types of compounds and or derivatives, etc. Note: Sun pharmaceuticals produces the highest quality modafinil on the market; it's consistently produced the correct version of the human active chiral center of the stereoisomers, so you get the proper enantiomer, so that the quality of the end product is much higher. This means that you could likely take a lower dose and avoid many side effects that come from the lower quality generic crap, that most insurance would usually provide. Also, I've never found one single compound to treat all of my Cataplectic and Narcoleptic Components. It would seem in extreme cases, the use of multiple compounds and usually a few herbs, are what's going to be needed, to begin to meet any level of human functionality! And Yes, of course, we will still fall short in the end, however I trust in God and pray daily for his love and guidance! Hope this helps, my brother. Experience: Narcolepsy 20 years 5 months 3 days.

NT2 here, I am a senior in college and doing a cognitive psych project on Narclepsy so I found this extremely helpful!! It sucks people aren't failure with narclepsy because its super cool- well I mean from a cognitive psych standpoint. Its a living hell living with it. This was the first video I watched out of 8 that actually delivered in-depth materials- and yes, he does define REM sleep, also its a good assumption to assume that one would know REM sleep if someone if looking up videos about a disorder that affects REM. Its better to deliver something complex and nuanced - Narclepsy is not well understood or researched so I would be happy that people are being educated on your wifes condition.
