I think the term Goth like Grunge was kind of made up by the media and marketing agencies. Which is why Bands and artists like Peter Murphy, just outright don't claim any connection to. The bands that were the earliest examples of so-called Grunge, like Mudhoney, screaming trees, or Alice in chains, would just say that shit was added on later.

Judging by the comments, Murphy's fans are stuck-up, humourless and too ignorant to even know who Nard-the fucking legend-wuar is. Too bad considering how much wit and meta/referential humour are defining elements of Bauhaus sound and lyrics

I think more likely, with the exception of The Sisters, "Goth" didn't exist when they started, there was no word for what they were doing, there was no scene until they created it, that's why they feel no connection to it. Siouxsie & The Banshees for example come more from the punk scene, and their first album is counted as one of the very first (and very best) post-punk albums. The moniker "Goth" came after.
@davidwhite48746 жыл бұрын
Bauhaus first album came out in 1977 (In The Flat Field). Goth wasn't a thing, then.

I was around in the early/mid 80's listening to Sisters of Mercy, Lords of the New Church, etc...they were all called deathrock at the time, there was no goth. I didn't hear that term goth until the 90's and to me it seemed the fans were the goths and the music was deathrock.
@DoktorHausMods11 жыл бұрын
Are you accusing Peter of a goth disinformation conspiracy? Bauhaus, Siouxsie, The Sisters and the other foundational bands never associated with goth because they didn't want to be pigeonholed into one genre, one that didn't really exist until they came along. They admit to not understanding it and begrudgingly accept it at best. No wonder he's misinformed.

@Kzierbold I don't consider Marilyn Manson "goth" (in the sense of Bauhaus, Siouxsie, and '80s goth) but I think what Peter meant by referring to Marilyn Manson as "goth" was that he didn't want to label himself as "goth" and that he wanted to distance himself from the bands that are considered "goth" now, such as Marilyn Manson.

I don't know anything about them now, but I have to say that they did put on good shows. Really nice, too, they seemed to be just as curious about us as we were of them. They opened for Siouxsie at the Hollywood Palladium in '86 - not a huge venue. Being a gothic kid in LA and hispanic, I realize we were like kids out of the Love & Rockets comic books to them. Peter Murphy seemed the same - curious about us, and not full of himself.

@letterfromastranger9 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the term 'gothic' music associated as a genre or classification didn't really come about until the late eighties or early nineties, roughly. The same thing for 'deathrock', although that was probably more familiar to the bands of those times. I don't think the majority of the bands that were labeled as such were deliberately trying to be associated in those ways at all. They just had their ideas and did what they did. You have the original voices, then you have an evolution of exaggerated versions from other bands that followed in their footsteps (sometimes). It's the fans that generally create those terms as a way to identify with whatever they listen to, and when you say something enough, it starts to spread and stick.

I do not know if this guy John Ruskin (aka NArdwuar ) can read all this comments but , i guess it's harsh for the interviewed character when they are speaking and anwerind the questions , you interrupt 'em quitting the microphone... not only harsh for the character as it's harsh for us the audience.. Goth isn’t a genre of music, or at least all the early stuff in the late 70s-mid 80s that gets labeled goth is not and was not “goth music/rock”. Bauhaus were a sort of art punk/post punk group, as were The Cure, Siouxsie/The Banshees, and other bands of their ilk that get called “goth rock”. I’m really not sure if Bauhaus being pigeonholed as the “goth godfathers” has been helpful for the band, or not, but when I listen to their albums I just hear art punk and post punk that’s sometimes dark, and references the macabre. People who cane after, especially of my generation (I’m 33) and zoomers (and to be fair we didn’t start it) often don’t seem to think about these bands in the context of their times, and the scenes they care out of. They were artists who were influenced by most of the same bands that inspired most of punk, post-punk, and the more interesting new wave (imo), and they were trying to make music that fit a certain mold, while being themselves, and bringing something unique to offer, like basically all the good bands of that era. Goth didn’t exist as a genre of music then, and I’d argue it still doesn’t. It’s a subculture, not a genre. ✌️❤️🏴♾
@bludfiend48604 жыл бұрын
Neither is punk a genre of music. It's also a subculture. "Punk" didn't exist when those bands started. Listen to The Damned then the Sex Pistols. Sound nothing alike. And they've said in interviews they were just trying to be a more raw rock n roll because rock had become so stale. This is just hair splitting, and quite stupid. The music may have come first, but it was integral in establishing the subculture, and thus became a part of it
