The other day was Hellboy day at my local comicbook shop, I ran in and they had a box full of free goodies they were giving away with every purchase which included: A poster with a complete Hellboy verse timeline order on the back, a book mark, a free 25 year anniversary addition of the right hand of doom. And a pin. I was so excited when I saw everything I had to tell the gentleman at the register how Hellboy was my absolute FAVORITE comicbook character so I scrambled around and got a few other comics (which were also on sale) And the gentleman rang up my purchase and then gave me one of everything in the box, I didn't think much of it. A few minutes later my brother bought a few things and looked at the give away box and turned to me and asked "How many things am I supposed to get?" And I enthusiasticly replied saying "I think one of everything! that's what they gave me- And the gentleman from the counter came back around the corner and corrected me saying "Actually it is supposed to be one per customer, but you told me Hellboy is your favorite so I gave you one of everything." I was stunned by His kindess and we all turned to one of the other owners (who has an awesome Hellboy tattoo on his forearm) and he smiled great big and said my brother can take one of everything too. We both walked out the door with full comicbook bags and huge grins, we said thank you a million times to the owners as we left. Good times.

Mignola is a master in the annals of comicdom. He's up there with all the greats, no doubt about it and I often would find myself in reverie considering frames and ideas he puts forth. I'm going to have to read this last Hellboy (along with the previous) again.

the next time I see someone talking shit about Hellboy in Hell I will redirect them right on to this. thanks! The connection to the Magician and the Snake alone had me straight up in tears. not to mention the silent panels at the end!

The ending was really great, and tied everything together so beautifully, both in-comic and out-of it. People shouldn't be talking shit about it... it's so great!! - Hass

These are such amazing art lessons. You should really consider teaching this stuff as a profession.

That'd be fun! I've done occasional lecturing and classes but all film-related... If you want to see more, I do a bunch of stuff at patreon.com/StripPanelNaked - there's over 100 annotated pages there now!

Strip Panel Naked There are a few colleges, in the US at least, that actually have majors focused on comics. SCAD and SVA are two of em.

So good. Hellboy was one of the very first comics I ever got into: I was drawn to Mignola's art, and he is still to this day one my absolute favorite artists. As a fantasy fan, the folklore aspect is what totally hooked me, and more than a few of the stories I've managed to scribble over the years owe a fair debt to this comic, I'm sure. I never quite managed to keep up with the story, due to erratic publishing, so there's still a lot to be read. I've only heard good things about Hellboy in Hell, though, and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

Same. I haven't kept up with loads and loads of Hellboy over the years (I've definitely read no more than half of it), but this final series was really interesting. It's very odd, structurally, but this final issue is just an amazing (potential) send off.

If you want to try and learn more, I'd definitely suggest Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics - and then anything on film, story or novel theory will all tie in to comics and storytelling in general as well.

Sometimes things are more subtle and less grand. I enjoy the fireworks but over years my fascination with the fuse slowly eating away at its self has increased dramatically.

I interpreted it differently I thought Hellboy found the three objects first then turned into the giant.

I have been waiting for this one, and it's as great as I thought it would be. I didn't think about Hellboy at the end in this manner, and I don't even know why. I wanted to ask you about how Mignola puts small panels of birds fluttering, statue-faces, etc. What's your take on that? It makes for a great rhythm while reading, but does it have any purpose or meaning beyond that?
@StripPanelNaked
@StripPanelNaked 8 жыл бұрын
+Janovjev I talk on my patreon in some of the research notes about a couple of other things Mignola does in this issue really well that I didn't have time for in the video, and one was about world building which partly incorporates some of those panels. But I think they have a slowing and calming effect. By putting something in the forefront, like the bird we see in a separate panel near the end, that's Mignola making Hellboy (and us) notice those little details, and it gives the pages a kind of serenity. As I say in the video I think it gives it more emotional punch like that, to focus on these small moments, but particularly after we've been seeing this big monolithic beast - version of Hellboy in previous pages. It brings it right back down to Earth (or, Hell, technically). That's my take on it anyway!

The current Fearscape comic uses an unreliable narrator, which is the first example that came to mind...!
