Narrow Gauge Railways of South Africa - Apple Express Part 7
By the time Port Elizabeth celebrated its centenary in the 1920’s, the city was well established as a port, although cargo still had to be transferred in lighters to and from the three jetties which constituted the harbour, and the ships anchored in the roadstead.
The breakwater which created the new artificial harbour in 1931 was built from stone extracted from the quarry at Chelsea, twenty-two kilometers inland.
Over the years, countless narrow gauge trains, carrying goods of every description, have rolled down the trestle and snaked into Port Elizabeth Harbour.
Transporting everything from stone to timber, from pipes to produce, the narrow gauge railway has faithfully and efficiently serviced the economy of the region - for nearly a century. But today, the future of the Avontuur Line is hanging in the balance.
