Glad that you managed to fix those bolts, better now than later. I do not own or been near of a narrowboat so glad that you share all this :) Maybe pick smth to fix also on the engine, on the next episode. Be safe !

Thanks! My priority for the moment is on the interior, but when I've done that I will definitely be tidying up and servicing the engine. Thanks for watching!

Nice work Edd, on the basis of watching this I'm subbed. I've lived on sea boats since 2010, maybe I'll try the canals at some point...

Thanks! Sea boats sound scary. I'm happy in the canals where there's no current or tide!

Hi Edd, just subscribed to your Channel, looking forward to your refit. Which part of the canal system are you on at the moment? Cheers😊

Hi John, thanks for subscribing! At the moment I'm on the Grand Union.

Not sure about your engine but my boat has a closed cooling system so you have a pump around the engine and a raw water pump to bring the water from the sea in my case
@EddHawkes8 ай бұрын
My boat has skin tanks which I thought was a closed system. I suppose the extra pump could be to assist the main pump. The skin tanks do add a huge volume to the original engine cooling system.

Don’t we all forget the gauges ,,,,that engine rocker box looks Very much like a minor 1000 thermostat housing just saying ,,GOOD LUCK
@EddHawkes7 ай бұрын
Cheers Steve! Yes, I think most BL engine rocker covers will fit. I've seen people with MG covers on their BMCs. I'm tempted to put my MG Metro Turbo cover on mine 😁

it has a sea water pump that circulates sea water through the heat exchanger, there should be a sea water strainer as well.
@EddHawkes8 ай бұрын
It doesn't pull in water from the canal, it's a closed system with skin tanks. The second pump might be there because the one on the engine can't cope on its own 🤷🏻♂️
@65bug5198 ай бұрын
@@EddHawkes probably for capacity then, you would want more than double cooling capacity than what the engine needs since it radiates heat through the walls of the tanks to the river.

Hi, can I advise that you coat the gasket with a light smear of silicone sealant to waterproof it. Grease the studs too. Seepage caused the corrosion that locked it in place. clean the alloy stub and apply a light smear of silicone to stop corrosion where the hoses fit. Just looking at the heat exchanger stub, I reckon a whole new set of hoses are due. It's possible that the antifreeze has become acidic, maybe flush and renew it at the same time? What are the water pump bearings like? A clean engine will show up leaks more easily.

Thanks for this, Rob. Great advice. I'm still relatively new to boating so I'm still a bit clueless! Servicing and cleaning up the engine is on my (long!) list of things to do. It is the first thing I'm going to do once the cabin is refitted.

"AF" simply means 'across flats', so 1/2 AF is literally a half inch across. 'Whitworth' have coarse threads and wouldn't fit AF threads, even if they're the same size across.
