Lots of good, practical, advice. Many thanks. I bought a cat basket for Smokie and she adored it straight away and was laying in it pouring within a minute. She had spent a month looking through the window at me before she came on the boat. She was very thin, now she is a fat cat. I think she saw it as a reinforcement that she was welcome and the boat was her. home. Once in a while I slip a hot water bottle under the blanket. She really likes the cat litter tray, a plastic basin from Pound Land. Considering her tough background she is very soft with me and follows me around.

Thank you guys, I’m moving onto a narrow boat within the next few weeks and my cat Bella will be joining me! She has only ever been a indoor cat living in a one bedroom flat and appears to have little interest in venturing outdoors so I think she will be ok! I can leave the doors to my Juliette balcony open and she just happily sits and watches the world go by…I hope she will do the same on the boat as Ide like for her to Atleast venture out to the cratch of the boat to see some sunshine ☀️

Tracking litter: Had Cats for 16 years....tried to contain the litter crumbs....Most succesfully with a coconut mesh doormat, cut in half for size...crumbs fall into the mesh, Just lift the mat and vaccuum it... Or had waffle pique shower mats... keeps crumbs in the ditches...and is washable. Love the idea of cats on a boat😻

You take me back 30 yrs! We had a grey cat identical to yours, he was completely stupid, he was always in trouble. He loved climbing, trees, rooftops, but he could never get down again. One day I heard his familiar 'help me ' howling , he had climbed up a neighbour's scaffolding tower and got into their bathroom through a tiny window 😨 . They were out all day (of course ) and when they returned I apologised because I didn't know what mess they would come back to! Luckily he had a pee in their bath! !! Good boy, not so stupid 😉 Miss him though. Lol

I know a guy in South Africa with a couple of tigers. As cubs, they used to pee in the house into a bowl ! I'm pretty sure a cat could be easily toilet trained if cat toilets were a thing !

Those collapsible carriers seem like a nice option...the hard plastic carriers take up a lot of storage space in a small house when they're not being used. Good to see how well your adult cats fit into those...thanks for filming that.

You can't beat a nice card box with a little hole in it, to keep cats amused for ages. My Missy would tear one of those collapsing carriers to shreds in a few minutes, she's really battered the hard plastic one! She hates being confined, if she can't get out when SHE wants!

Great video ladies. I'm seriously considering living with my 2 cats on a boat. It won't happen for about a yr but I wanted to make sure it was suitable before I gave it more serious consideration. I'm hoping to have a permanent spot but if not you have made continuous cruising work. You have answered many of my concerns regarding cats on boats. They share litter trays and eat/drink from same or individual bowls. They can 'play' aggressively in the house during prolonged periods of bad weather. They will chase each other/lava floor on the ground floor. I estimate that space is certainly less than you guys have. So mind at rest there. Happy days!

Super sensible advice. We used to have two cats, brother and sister like yours. She lived until she was 16 and her brother hung out with us until he was almost 21. Having a microchip was essential as he was always a thin cat and got a bit scrawny looking as he got older. Neighbours would pick him up and take him to the vets thinking he was a stray. He wasn’t that impressed when we got a Collie puppy, but soon showed the puppy who was boss. Puppy thought the cat would be an extra playmate. She soon learnt cat didn’t think so.

Ever since my wife and I bought are own home we have had a cat and a dog living together at the same time. We are on are third set of them as we take in the older cats and dogs that are over looked from the cats protection and the dogs trust. It is so funny to watch them each pair have all got along but the cats do tend to boss the dogs about.

Have they ever jumped or fallen into the water? When you are cruising and have Moor up for a lock etc do they ever jump out to the tow path? Lastly, how are you sure they don't wander off?

It must be frustrating when it's time to take off and they won't come home. I assume they have never fallen in the canal? That could be fatal. Top tip re kitty litter. I buy BioKat micro classic from Zooplus. No tracking at all but will scatter as I have a cat who digs to Australia before she goes. Easily brushed up with dustpan & brush. All that white stuff also gets onto cat’s fur, which this doesn’t so not ingested. Great making clumps & no smell. Just remove clumps & business with scoop & top up if necessary. Big 14 litre bags. My cat also dashes indoors to use her tray rather than go in the garden.

The new cat litter mats are amazing and work great. By the time Kitty walks across all the litter has fallen off his feet trapped in the mat. I guess it would be finding the right size for your boat but they really do work. No tracking of litter anymore!!!

It looks like your cats really enjoy their lives, and that's a good thing. I've had cats all of my life and have always had good relationships with them -- many of whom lived many years. Felix lived to be 14, Ralph and Ona each to 16, Bessie to 12, Molly to 14 and Gracie (still alive) is now 18. Your blog is interesting. Unfortunately, I live in Kansas USA, where there are no canals or opportunities for narrow boating. I do enjoy watching and dreaming, however.

Got up at 9. Spent 15 minutes getting my porridge. But, bfore I could do that, I spent 90 minutes cleaning up three generalised location of sick from my largest male cat. Extracted 4 poops from 3 of the litter boxes (we have four cats and five boxes). I clear out one or two of the boxes of the pee each day. I use the 6mm wood pellets (really cheap if you buy it as stove fuel), and it will soak up pee for days. The wood turns to sawdust that you can simply dispose into biodegradable locations (often a hedge is fine). I filter/sieve the litter to keep the unused pellets and dispose only of the sawdust. One 15kg bag (costs less than £5 a bag) lasts each cat about 6 months. Like you, we use Pets at Home (Vets 4 Pets). They will also chip the kitten as part of their welcome pack. The cats have a worm/flea etc liquid on the neck 4 times a year, as part of the £10 per month per cat program with Vets 4 Pets (this also includes annual check up, vaccinations and also nurse visits). Scratching posts are a must. We have a really big one designed for Maine Coon cats. They love climbing up it and sitting on the top (it cost about £50 from eBay). For our new boat we plan to fit sisal carpet/matting to the lower cabin walls. Vets 4 Pets are often near the canal. The one in Stratford on Avon is about 400 yards from the top lock by the Birmingham Road (next door to B&M, LIdl and Aldi), and the one in Leamington is 100 yards from the canal (moor up at Lidl - they have moorings next to the store entrance, and walk across the road to Vets 4 Pets). In Rugby it is about a 10 minute walk to Vets4Pets from the Oxford Canal, and In Coventry it is about 30 minutes walk, again from the Oxford Canal. I love that cat backpack!!

I have been considering getting a trawler and cruising the Bahamas a few months every year. One consideration is my adopted stray, Wahoo. He likes to get out and about but I have to keep him close because of all the cat killing animals in Florida (Bobcats, coyotes, pythons, hawks) I am not sure how he would take to life aboard and keeping him aboard in port is going to be a problem. You are lucky your guys stay close to home.

My cats, kiwi and luna, a brother and sister, fight like crazy, especially kiwi he can get really aggressive with poor luna. I hope I can find that tunnel for them to play. A good tip with the box litter, add a sprinkle of bicarbonate soda to the litter and I'll remove any bad smell. I don't live on a boat but in a small house on the mountains in central Italy and some days I fear for them letting them out, plus the 13 stray cats I'm feeding outside my house can get aggressive with my cats (all are neutered even the strays 😳) 💚❤😘

It is inevitable that one will compare cats to dogs. I simply love how graceful a cat moves, and there is no comparison to dogs on that note... it is almost as though they have a flexible skeletal structure. Also their ability to move about so stealthily, able to sneak up on you until you hear the 'meow' as an attention-getter. I have to admire how well behaved your cats are, as I have had a couple that were virtually impossible to train. How do you do it?

Very timely. We are planning to move aboard a narrowboat next year with our two cats. Ours are a bit older. I have seen some people put a cat flap in on a door by replacing one of the vents. Is this not a problem for the BSS certificate. How do you do it? We love your videos.

The vents are usually too narrow- for ours anyway. Our new cat flap is at the vent (But enlarged) but you’ll see we installed another vent on top as the cat flap does not count as a vent.

Yes, we have an unused scratching post ! We did find a scratching board (rope wrapped around a short plank) and this lays flat on the floor - but the cat prefers it. It does need some kind of fixing otherwise the cat drags it - so we looped the 'handle' of it round a table leg.

Hi there. Love the Vlog. Been subscribed for a while now. Am in the process of of planning to acquire a narrowboat as a liveaboard. My question is not about a narrowboat per se, but rather about getting cats acclimatised to a narrowboat when you first move onboard. I recently have acquired a Maine Coon boy and he obviously will move with me onto the narrowboat when that happens. Any ideas or hints on how to get a cat acclimatised. Dangers and risks and helpful hints please. Obviously cat going swimming and cat wandering off and not coming back are 2 obvious ones

The cat that owns me (Betty) has always used a litter tray. Even if she is out in our very large garden she will come in to use her litter tray. Unfortunately the other cats in the neighbourhood use our garden for their convenience.

Move the litter tray to outside. Dig a patch of soil over and place it on that. After a couple of uses, put the litter tray out of the way but leave the cat's deposits on the soil - hopefully Betty will get the idea it's ok to go outside and you won't have the litter tray hassles any more. I used to have one indoor/outdoor cat who would scratch at the door to come in and make a dash straight for the litter pan. That behavior seems to be universal. Currently, none of my cats go outside, or want to.

I've noticed Earl Grey hates doing his business in wet ground. Normally of he's been out, he makes a beeline to the food. But, if it's been raining, he grabs a bite of food, then heads off to his box, as he suddenly realizes how long since he last peed. Otherwise I think he does pee outside. But we do live in California, where it will be dry for months on end.

Just wondered what breed the cats are? We had Burmese for a number of years and the cats would never stray. They were so attached to us that they would follow us on walks. Prior to them we had mixed breeds that pretty much ignored what we were up to. I will admit they were neutered, which I think does make a difference.

Their mother was a rag doll and their fathers are unknown. They are as chatty as ragdolls with just the one layer of fur but then they have other characteristics aside from rag dolls

I once taught a cat to “go” outside simply by burying some of her litter deposits in loose soil and showing it to her. Might be worth a try, though as you say, all cats are different

Cats get house trained. Too keep litter cleanish use a scoop that picks up solids or clumps you can get a 3 times usage. We are on land but deal with rescued cats. You might laugh at this but we have a cat Avery . Used to hold birds ( have 2 hand reared cockatiels) but now it's for home-stay cat's. We have currently 3 that are here due to no allowed animal rental homes. Currently have 1 fixed male that will go home, 1 x 5 month old kitten that until now was pregnant, we are trying to get her trust. As for the rest 2 dogs (retired) 4 cat's and we lost (cockerspaniel) in January due to diabetes she was 10. Still working on consoling her husband but he got old fast, used to being at the vets for a day or 2 but it was not nice watching him try to find her. definitely not not only a human problem because she also watched out for me, my care giver when mum was away. I'm a softy miss my girl greatly, time is limited so live love and care for all of those with you friend family or companions. Sorry just put my heart out there love all my friends and family.

So...you say the cats have your mobile number if they end up in a vets, but, do they carry a mobile, or would they have to ask to use the vets phone? I suppose you could leave some money in their collar to cover the phone call :)
