We are currently holding off for a week and crawling along as the next locks ahead of us have had to shut for emergency repair work. @sddsddean8 ай бұрын
The 'old stop lock' at around 22:20 is a set of old stop gates. As the Shroppie was one of the last canals built, it is much straighter due to liberal use of embankments and cuttings. The gates were put either end of embankments in case they breached, so at least some water would be retained. The moving water would slam the gates shut, hence no balance beams to close them.
@uponreflection8 ай бұрын
Thank you for the info I did actually look into this and have covered the use of flood gates at embankments in the upcoming vlogs. Thanks for watching 😊

Hi guys! Once again another awesome vlog. I have another 3 questions, if you don’t mind helping. 1. What is a stop lock and why it’s needed? 2. What is the average time it takes to work a lock? 3. Can a person navigate through a lock themselves if they don’t have any partner who is living with them? Paul, if you can’t answer, please ask captain Ernie. Have a great day. Stay safe
@uponreflection3 ай бұрын
Hi there. A stop lock is a type of canal lock that was originally used to control the flow of water between different canal companies. Its usually not a deep one. It worked to completely break the flow of water and was a way to prevent one canal taking large amounts of water from another canal. Yes single handed boaters can operate locks on their own, in deeper locks they would hold or tie off their centre line while they operated the paddles on the lock allow the water in or out to ensure their boat didn't move around too much. Average time depends how deep it is and how much water you need to let in or out..I'd say on average 15minutes. 😊
@quaysidetravelcentre4253 ай бұрын
