An extra part to remember is that Pain's body may act more like a water balloon then a normal body since it's a corpse animated with Chakra strands. I personally liked the animation style of that fight and felt it enhanced the action instead of taking away from it; although it was pretty obviously different than the normal Naruto animation style.

@@Mojo_RadioI think he’s using it fairly correctly, you’re trying to justify something by any means necessary when it’s not really justifiable. An extra part to remember is that pains body won’t act more like a water balloon than a regular body because in literally every scene he’s been in till this fight,none of pains bodies behave like water balloons, in fact they all behave like normal bodies. Hell even in the first half of this fight before Naruto gets pinned down pains body does not behave like a water balloon. So going off previously animated and existing evidence there’s no rhyme or reason that they did this to the animation except honestly I feel like a big fuck you to the fans

To convey the insane speed and force Pain is applying to his punch. General anime fans are too accustomed to superfast fights between superstrong characters that look like nothing unusual (Dragonball is the biggest offender here - characters are supposedly move at cosmic speeds, yet even their hair barely moves), which makes this fight a culture shock in a way for them.

i think one key point people forget about pain is that he's not alive. his body is merely a puppet of sorts that's being used via bluetooth. so what i believe the animators were trying to convey was not only speed but also a sense of "emptiness". mainly because of pain's corpse which could deform in unnatural ways.

Why wasn’t it deforming in any other previous fight? Or specifically in the first half when he’s fighting Naruto or why don’t any of the other pain bodies deform there’s literally no evidence of that happening. The most clear reason that the animation is bad is because shippuden animation had been slowly declining since the fight between kakashi and hidan. And they pump this show out weekly and maybe they don’t have enough animators and maybe some key animators weren’t working on episodes at that time and maybe the fucking biffed it, all legitimate reasons instead of yeah the animation is supposed to suck it looks better like that

Consistent tone and emotion in a story is important to me. That’s the most important thing to convey not how skilled the animator is. This lost sight of what this fight and story is about and wasn’t focused on what it should be conveying. You have these very deep intense feelings and clashes of worldview dissipated into nothingness by comedy and over animation. (Those facial distortions and comedic moments take his emotions and ideas out of the fight.)

Totally agree. People can criticize the use of expression and not be criticizing the skill of the animators. This was good animation. This was also off-point and discontinuous enough with the art of the rest of the series that it distracted me from the moment. They’ve hired high-end production for other big scenes and got it right. This one was a miss.

Couldn't disagree more. This had to be my favorite animated episode of the entire series. The rawness of the animation draws you into the emotion of the characters like no other episode. It felt like the first Sasuke vs. Naruto fight, which was my second favorite. The animation made you know this was a story changing fight in the series.

The artist seems to be conveying the feeling the there is a corpse being flung around at unimaginable speeds thus distorting is certain situations.

I think the reason this animation took the viewers immersion, and arguably, the pathos away is because it's bare, there's no speed lines and dark lines on Pain's face.

I think for the context of the Naruto vs Pain fight, it felt very goofy seeing that animation when we did. I always try to rationalize weird things in any anime so that I don't fixate on "issues", so with this one, I just chalked it up to Pain is being controlled, has crazy durability, and therefore can move at ridiculous speeds without worrying about injury or whatnot. It also demonstrated Nagato's resolve with the words "My pain is still far greater than yours" and punching the ground and that speed. Professional yapper, I know.

More like fixating on those weird cell towers that are disguised as trees so we don’t feel uncomfortable but end up just making us think about the fact that someone intentionally discussed, designed, and fabricated them to look almost like trees instead of recognizing that cell towers are important and present infrastructure… as we almost always regularly do.

IMO, this exact scene represents just how ugly Pain was willing to make this fight. Right before this, naruto lost control of himself and went full kyuubi. Pain wanted this, recognized this, and even said That naruto is justified to feel such hatred, such pain, and that he rightfully deserves justice. *BUT* He also felt as though Naruto's pain in that exact moment was but a mere drop in the bucket of him losing everything. Thus his sentiment. He wanted to show naruto that the exact same rage Naruto felt, is nothing compared the maelstrom of anger and wrath that pain has BEEN feeling. This was one of the best fury moments i have ever witnessed in Anime history.

**Spoilers in this post** this /episode/ was [one of] the best AND the animation was good on a technical level. But the stylism and art was way too noticeably out of place with the rest of the art of the series. I love when they pay a high end animator for an important fight episode and they have struck gold with other episodes; 3rd Hokage vs 1st and 2nd; Naruto vs Sasuke; Kakashi vs. Obito; etc. This episode had a lot of great animation that was absolutely on point and affective and epic but there was just enough discontinuity in the art that I found distracting including the exact moment referenced in this video. It crossed the line of too cartoony and detracted from the very effect this Animator tries to use to justify it. Other examples that took me out of the moment: the extremely cubic earth style wall was a little off point but the pile drive sequence and the comical road-runner leg wheels when he’s running on the water made me roll my eyes. I’m not unimpressed by the drawing, and I’m not disagreeing with the use of these techniques in other animations but in the case of Naruto…this was not a moment of poignancy.

My favorite episode of the series is this one. People need to realize the 6 paths of pain are literally dead controlled by nagato so the motions of the fight were supposed to look corpse like.

If you want to think logically Pain is a dead puppet, controlled by Nagato. so he could realistically surpass normal limitations or ignore them entirely giving weird looking moves.

He’s a literal puppet. Idk why people complain about the animation when it was amazing and the parts they complain about make zero sense. Yes pains animation changes, it’s to show how fast he’s moving and the power he’s putting off. It’s literally that simple. We saw haku for example moving mftl but nothing. The animation of pain was to show how significantly fast he was moving to the point it morphed his body. Not even haku had that happen and he was mftl. That was the whole point animation wise was to show how many lvls above pain was

It was bad because it was rushed. Style itself isn't bad but they had so little time because it's weekly. That's why end quality was bad, look at those cubic rocks. You can clearly see it was rushed.

The whole point of the animation was to portray the sheer scale and power of the battle. Up until this point we have never seen naruto go past 4 tails or seen pain fight full force. From an animation standpoint. They portrayed it well. Ridiculous animation at moments to show the Ridiculous power and speed of these 2

Honestly i always thought (lore wise) if was because they were going so hard they bent reality a bit. Animation wise i thought it was great at emphasizing the raw power in the moment. You can make anything look bad if you nit pick on a few frames.

The animation was bad I don’t know why people delude themselves into thinking otherwise, we were legitimately robbed of what could’ve been one of the best animated fights in history, luckily the tone for the most part hit and it was sprinkled with just enough good moments and an amazing score that it wasn’t completely lost. Animation can be exaggerated to convey speed and emotion but there is a limit, and this fight entirely disregarded it. There where too many changes of style, and it was essentially looney toons, idc what excuses you can make up for that, it took everyone watching out of the fight, pain literally gets hammered like a nail, it’s funny I enjoyed it but in this fight with these stakes? Do that shit in a sasuke fight not a Naruto fight. Pain also runs so fast his legs become a figure eight scribble like in a looney toon, wtf? The landscape becomes so minimalist every piece of debris is straight ripped from Minecraft. The saving grace of this fight is the scale, the kyubi missles and fire breathing and that shit isnt even cannon. The fucking thing looks like it was recorded in 240p too wtf is that? Speed was perfectly conveyed in previous fights , sasuke vs Naruto at valley of the end, gara vs lee, kakashi vs hidan although that’s when shippuden animation really starts dropping off. It was corrected for kakashi vs obito but by then if you ask me Naruto animation is entirely unwatchable. And I get it animating is hard, and they crunch out an episode weekly but it really pisses me off that the studio heads didn’t invest more into this arc and threw every animator they could find on it. This was being built up to the entire series, when will Naruto lose control of the kyubi? It was my fav arc reading the manga. Totally fucking ruined the fight. They hit the mark on the significant emotional moments, hinatas sacrifice, Naruto’s initial reaction, pain initiating chibaku tensei, yamatos reaction, the score build up to kyubis flame thrower fire works raining down, the 4ths appearance and Naruto ripping the seal. All of these scenes hit cause they were high emotion low animation scenes. Beautiful shots really, but the fight was fucking garbage and a damn shame, hope Netflix picks it up and reanimates it like they doing with one piece

That segment looks like shit but, it was probably the best Naruto fight in the series from the build up to the fight and the character growth after Jiraiya's death. The rest of the animation in the Pain fight was pretty good, for the most part, this was just so shockingly different that it gets talked about to this day

It's a smear frame. It serves the motion very well. Watching it, it's a very interesting way that the animator decided to convey motion, and It looked good in motion.
