skoo-kull is actually the proper pronunciation, from a life long philadelphian ;)

Came here to post something similar! Not from philly, but I do live in berks :P

That's the problem...if it has to be pronounced as "skoo-kull", it should be written as such as well.

David, I picked up my first Narwhal pen at the company’s inaugural showing at the 2019 DC show. It worked great until I twisted it wrong and stripped it. So, it is sitting in a plastic bag, waiting for a pen Doctor to come along. Several of the posted comments have mentioned a different, commonly used pronunciation for that region: SKU-cull. That’s how I had heard some Philadelphians pronounce the river. I had not realized the word was Dutch or its meaning, so thank you on that part. I will have to pass on the giveaway, but thanks for the offer. I am already more involved with social media than I need to be without getting into Instagram. I started getting into fountain pens in hopes of backing off from staring at my computer screen as much. But thanks for reviewing this new pen! (Nice new/renewed look! I am sure your razor was happy to see you again.)

I'm impressed that your history of the Schuylkill name was spot on. I grew up in Philly and now live only about 20 miles from the source of the river in Schuylkill County, Pa; about 90 miles NNW of Philadelphia.
@michellestephenson16804 жыл бұрын
One of my favorite pens! It is just gorgeous. I wish you’d emphasized the ink window more; it’s a terrific feature. And the ink! I guessed the Monteverde comparison. I hadn’t thought to put that in my Schuylkill, but perhaps once it empties, I will.

Great job, David! Another Philadelphian weighing in...just ordered this pen from Points Pens, looking forward to arrival. I spent several years in the sport of rowing, crew and sculling, on the SkOOkl, as we say in Philly dialect. Correct? I doubt it, lol. The color scheme does pretty well at capturing the murky character of the river.

I have questions ... so the twsbi eco has like this issue where you twist the piston there is a huge amount of twist before the piston catches and moves the piston .. do the narwal pens have such a pronounced twist before it catches the piston or is it immediate ? I'd like to have one but I like pens like the noodlers konrad where there is no give in the twisting action. Thanks David for all you do :) take care

Those/This isn't a Jowo nib. It is a cheaper chinese/taiwanese nib used on a lot of pens coming out of China.. That said they are by no means bad. They are used by Mr. Pen.uk on his Tankard, Parsons Essential and the the like. But they are a substantial step down from the Jowo's. These nibs can be had on ebay for about $10 for a 4 pack. They write well, but quality control is poor, more often than not, the center channel is not centered on the nib(if you look closely)
@championdefoot4 жыл бұрын
Came here to say this, just in case people decide to go out and buy an entire Jowo nib unit specifically for this pen and find out they aren't compatible. Also the scroll work looks like something you'd find on a Fuliwen 017 nib.

Given the names of the company owners, it's not surprising that they would have a Chinese connection. The feed and nib are Jinhao #6--and it appears to write like a Jinhao, the fine nib being closer to medium. And the rest of the pen is also likely sourced from China. That's not a bad thing, though. You pay more for a piston filler and the beautiful plastic body, which is more expensive to produce than metal. And what these guys also supply--which you don't get with pens direct from Chinese companies--is quality control.

Thanks for the review and giveaway, David. I know the ink window is a change from the original Narwhal. Besides the slight difference in length, are there any others changes?

The close-ups of the nib and feed seem to show a collar. Is this a removable nib unit? That can be very useful in a piston-fill pen. If I may suggest it, I think it would be a good thing to add to your reviews going forward. All that stuff is too much to ask for a $55 pen, and like others here, I don't do Instagram. So no thanks.

Hey David, great review, just a minor tip, and I'm sorry if you end up getting a ton of comments that say this, but as someone who lives in an area of PA near the Schuylkill (Lancaster), with tons of family in Philly, I'd be remiss if I didn't say that most around here pronounce Schuylkill like Skoo-kull, just dropping the "l" in the middle of the word. @shadokittie68494 жыл бұрын
Perhaps it’s U.S. spelling?
@osirisgolad4 жыл бұрын
It is most definitely Dutch, but the spelling is either Americanised or stuck in the 1600s. If I spell it Schuilkil, that probably seems a lot more Dutch than Schuylkill. In fact, I know of at least one example of a place in the Netherlands that uses this exact same word: Sluiskil(sluice creek). I've seen the older version of this word(kille) used on old maps as well, mostly in names of tidal areas along the Westerschelde.

I don’t do Instagram, so this comment is for the Philadelphians who think Southern Californians give a damn about how anyone else pronounces certain words. David is from San Diego; we pronounce every letter and every syllable. New Orleans is not “norlans”. W.E.B Dubois rhymes with wah not boys. If you’re so interested in correct pronunciation, the Dutch pronunciation is closer to “skoogle”
@mghJD3 жыл бұрын
Yeah... no, it’s pronounced Skoo-kul which if you hear a Philadelphian say it, it sounds closer to “skoogle”. New Orleans is 2 words and it’s perfectly acceptable to say both. Southern accents just happen to run it together.
