Congratulations to Sri Lanka they were superb. They played entertaining highly skillful, determined fired up cricket. Their batsman especially are very pleasing to watch. Wonderful strikers of the cricket ball. The hook for six, the cover drive to the fence, The Straight drive to the sight screen, the late cut to the ropes. They played with a enormous amount of talent and skill. Their bowlers normally their weak point. Was superb and used the English conditions to make the ball talk through the air and off the pitch. Making life very difficult in their England players own backyard. Although the Oval pitch in late summer behaves similar to a subcontinent pitch after a summer of the sun baking the pitch. So a more favourable pitch and maybe conditions greeted Sri lanka in late English summer. They took full opportunity. Now as a side note I have to be a bit critical of the big three cricket nations that is England, Australia and India. That is they tend to over rule the ICC when playing the lesser nations in terms of inviting them to fit into the schedule on home territory of the big three Eng,Aus and Ind. Teams like Sri Lanka which should be given series more often in England, Australia and India seem to have to wait a long time to get a series in the big three and when they two in Australia case only given mostly 2 tests. To their credit England has given two tests to Sri Lanka this time. But it isn't always the case. For example in last 15 years it seems Australia is invited for some one day or t20 series in England every year. When Australia could better use instead of doing another long flight to England outside the Ashes. Host one of the lesser nations in Australia at this time for a one day or t20 series. For example a New Zealand or West Indies or Pakistan can be invited to Australia to a series either in Darvin or in Melbourne at the indoor cricket stadium they have they could use during this time instead of Australia going and playing England again flying all the way to England again. It seems the big three determine in their schedule who they play and don't give enough chances to the nations outside the big three. Its like the big three is a seperate club from the rest of the smaller cricket nations with less financial resourses. Like Sri Lanka, West Indies, Pakistan, Bangladesh, NZ etc these nations deserve a fair go and to be invited more often. Especially teams like Sri Lanka deserve more chances to play test cricket and be invited more for longer series with England, Australia and India. Cricket is dominated by the big three and I would like to see that change to smaller nations get a bigger slice of the schedule when it comes to test, one day and t20 cricket series.

I feel like people are focusing more on a England being complacent narrative than appreciating the fact that SL has an insanely high talent but inconsistent bunch of new kids playing (amongst the 2 uncles) who out of the blue played close to their potential. Nissanka and Kamindu both had FC averages of 60+ both clearly generational talents. Kusal Mendis a freak talent with zero discipline. Kumara a genuine 150kph bowler when fully fit, Vishwa a very talented yet inconsistent young left arm quick etc. On top of this there is a world cup winning warhorse in Mathews, Chandimal and coach ATG WC winning Jayasuriya recently taking over the coaching reigns. Few weeks ago SL beat India thoroughly in an ODI series which no one expected either. Good to see Windies and SL resurgence cricket is richer for having these two once giants coming back into the fray.

There are a few English batters who go into panic mode and play a bit village. Not sure why. Be professional, remember how good you are and take your time as it's a test match. This need to entertain the crowd is fine, but let your class shine through.
@taimurhuk5433 ай бұрын
This “need to entertain” is the crux of the issue. Sports is a results driven business at the end of the day. Entertaining the public is a bonus. A luxury. If fans want entertainment, they can go to the movies. Or watch the dozens of shows on streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. They can go to the West End or book a ticket to New York to watch a Broadway musical. Don’t coming looking for entertainment in a cricket match or any sporting event.

It was galling to see us lose like that. It's like seeing a dog piss on its own food. It was so unnecessary. Give me a 200 run grind with Geoff Boycott and Chris Tavare any day. At least it's not embarrassing! It's like watching The Three Musketeers turning up for a fight so pissed and casual and irresponsible they haven't even brought their swords. Bazball is pure blagging! It's making it up on the hoof! On one occasion on a perfect batting pitch Tavare was 40 after five hours during which he patted back half volleys, took evasive action from 60mph long hops, he hit no boundaries and even the singles he scored were not even forcing singles but a series of nudges and deflections. I can tell you it is the height of embarassing to see the fielding side posting a silly mid off and a silly mid on to a recognised batsman, well set with a ball sixty overs old.

I would love to have seen Bazball aginst the West Indies. Not this West Indies 1980's West Indies. I can't tell how good the english are and I have been watching cricket for a long time. My suspicion is that they aren't as talented as many of the great sides before but they use Bazball to psychologically intimidate opposition which is fantastic tactically. Maybe man for man they are not that good Root is world class but who else?I think Bazball is an equalizer if not a winning tactic where teamwork can trump individuals, whereas it wouldn't work against 2000's Australia or 80's West Indies because they were that good individually. We will never know

Two world class players, one currently in the side. The rest range from developing to very good.
@hertor88033 ай бұрын
I don't have a problem with Bazball, and I prefer this era over Cook and Root any day where we were terrified of risking anything but I can't help but feel it is a tactic that could only work in this era, where the quality of test cricket players is generally poor (despite them being "360 players", blah, blah). You can get away with it now. However it does seem to be used as an excuse to take no responsibility at all which I can't abide. That amazing fact that Ben Duckett left one ball all series, as an opener. That just tells me that he doesn't have the capability to leave a ball, so adopts a tactic to hide his flaws as a batsman. It's a pretty damning indictment of his technical ability but it works and his average is good because he can hit the ball and there are not enough quality bowlers around to expose it. Of course we have one world class batsman and he has pretty much been making hay for the last 3 years.

I thought in the last Ashes in psrticular a superior Aussie side was intimidated into a drwan series. Pat Cummins inexplicably went defenssive from ball 1. Eng vs Ind on English soil will be interesting. How will Sharma approach Bazball? Also next Ashes in Australia against the aging Australians will be revealing especisally if England can get Wood and Archer on the park. Right now you correct it's more English hope that they can Bazball every team than actual results. I don't think this English side is very talented but neither is the rest of the world maybe just India so Bazball might just work for a while longer tactically until they are forced to change

Harry Brook had an unbelievable start to his test career and this Sri Lanka series was the first time he had a few bad innings back to back. I am not worried about his lack of runs this series which happens to every batsman but my concern is how he tries to play risky shots all the time without respecting the conditions or opposition bowlers. He looks to be in a hurry to get boundaries so I feel if he can just curb his instincts then he will be back to scoring big runs like he has right from start of his test career to before this series.

I think they are wrong in praising England's efforts this summer. In the final test match they were for the first time without Anderson, Wood and Broad. The England attack is now, and will continue to be, no better than average. So England should have been aware that there was no longer a first class attack to back up the fragility of over attacking batsmanship. They now had to play responsibility. They failed miserably to adjust, and were predictably thrashed.

If he'd stayed in he may have been able to bat with the tail & maybe extend the lead over 250 which may have proved a much tougher chase for Sri Lanka. That aside he has been excellent. I'm a big fan of 'Bazball' but there's a fine line between batting positively & throwing your wicket away recklessly. They need to cut that out as you certainly can't score any runs when you're back in the pavilion.
