A group of NASA interns from different colleges across the nation came together during Summer 2015 with one goal: the successful flight test of PRANTDL-2. This student-produced video details the students' journey from fabrication to flight test of the PRANDTL-2 subscale aircraft. The students also worked on preparing the successor aircraft, PRANDTL-3, for flight tests later this year.

A big thank you to Al Bowers. He WANTS to share his knowledge with younglings. He wants them to see what CAN be done. He wants them to open up their mind and tell US in the near future "Hey guys, this idea is maybe weird, but ...it is better that the original." Thinking outside of the box is something that is hard to teach. Al Bowers masters that teaching skill. Thanks, Al.

Horten / Prandtl wings were developed in the 1930ies. So building and flying one is really not thinking outside of any box. Try www.island-masters.de !!! Than you can see what outside the box really means.

True. Hortens / Prandtl were there in the 30's. That is not innovating. But ...now we can proof the benefit of those designs. And ...that technology is rather new and never placed before on a similar design like this one. Thinking outside the box made him go for this lesser known airplane designs. His believe that it has something very good, kept him focussed on this design. And ...Al will soon proof that he was right in his assumption.

I agree: It's a work in progress. But in daily work with Horten model aircrafts you can see that the problem are within this conception: Strong positive sweep generates the performance diminishing "Mitten-Effekt". And the "bell-shape" lift distribution required for flight stability generates a extreme reduction of lift in the outer wings. Until now no one managed to beat the performance of flying wings with elliptical lift distribution with a Horten Wing. And the standard configuration with a separate stabilizer performs (until now) far beyond an flying wing.

@@IslandMasters So, 6 years later, what have you achieved with you're outside the box thinking?

My father worked at NASA Langley Field VA in 1947. He worked with Adolf Busemann who was a protégé of Prantdl's. He was at our house for dinner and sometimes stayed the night. He developed the swept wing in Germany and his lectures inspired Whitcomb to develop the Area Rule.

Obviously the Spektrum Dx8 is the best radio transmitter for RC Aircraft. Even NASA uses it. Wow.

What a beautiful glider. Do you have plans for this? I want to build one.

Perhaps you could read up their research output. There are no engineering plans available per se but the aerodynamic databis available.

I found a video with a Prandtl -D design finally, and it explains a bit of how it works that I had been missing in Al Bowers talks and papers.

Horten / Prandtl wings were developed in the 1930ies. Up to date standard gliders reach a glide ratio of up to 1:50 . Horten wings remain at 1:30 . So the model shown is a nice experimental model aircraft. But neither new nor high performing technology.

What Prandtl-style sailplane developed and built with modern analysis/design/materials technologies are you using to make the determination that "Horten wings remain at 1:30"? Or, do you for some reason think it's useful to compare an aircraft designed on paper and built with 1940s materials with modern sailplanes designed on computers and built with the latest materials and construction technologies?

@@caconym358 Let me know when someone has built one that meets that standard. I will not hold my breath. The research is worthwhile, but has a long way to go before it has any chance of producing a competitive practical airplane in any useful category (if it ever does).

Quality of audio is poor. Great flying well piloted glider. Glider is accelerated by elastic band per video.
