isn't all of this form a year or two ago when NASA held a competition, and MARSHA Design won?? looks like the same teams from what I remember???

As before - it brushes over a lot of stuff - ie what volume needs to be supplied from earth. The labaroratory in one is laughably a couple of microscopes (really) and who actually expects crew to last a year without closeable doors on their personal living spaces. Still think that the inflatable version will be the first used (if any) as it looks the lowest risk if not nicest (from actual liviling point of view and heaviest to transport option. Though if elon gets his rocket on then crew quarters are sorted initially and the other options look good.

From an Occam's Razor point of view: every "contestant" came with their best foot forward, and not one of them considered the "balance-of-system" approach of using the "Olivine Sand Dunes for 3D Print Medium. The Olivine Sand Dunes - ARE THE ONLY PROCESSED SUBSTANCE ON THE PLANET IN GREAT ABUNDANCE. 3D Printing with "this consistent material", mixed with "anaerobic adhesive" to make the bonding uses less energy. I'm so sorry. but Robert Zubrin was right.

Outgassing could be a serious problem for mars colonies if proper research is not done on the moon. The first biosphere failure was due to concrete outgasses and this could be more significant if mars habitats are designed for 1/2 atmospheric pressure. Plastics also pose outgassing problems due to gasses trapped in the molecules during manufacture. Then there is the problem of biosphere equilibrium. Stuffing a closed system with Noah’s-ark animals does not ensure a desirable result as disclosed in biosphere 2 collapses. The types of materials of construction, the environment conditions and the shapes of habitats seem likely to be dominant factors. For example air ducts would favour insects and small rodent populations. Porous walls made from 3D printing regolith with binders such as cement or thermoplastics might favour several of the 1000s of types of bacteria living on our skin, to the point where they could survive and mutate on the surface of Mars consuming the energy in the perchlorates (yes there are bacteria on earth that live on it). The moon project is critical for solving these problems being only a few days away from rescue compared with 6 months for mars. America was a biosphere when Columbus brought his settlers and deseases wiped out the locals as a consequence.

With Nasa, only the best will do. The competition will be truly tough. 🙄

Interesting. According to everything I just watched, everyone is going to be a vegetarian. I would rather see aquaponics than hydroponics. Fish is good but would get tired of after a while. So you can use the left over plant material to feed pigs and chickens. Who doesn’t like eggs and bacon for any meal?

I’m sure they will eventually. Starting with Aquaponics is a lot easier than trying to bring or rise caddie on Mars. Aquaponics is a closed loop system so once you get it started you need very little to keep it going(energy & care wise). A Aquaponics system could also be small enough to fit in a future Mars habitat. Ask any farmer and they will tell how difficult it can be to rise caddie on this planet 🌎. Now imagine trying to do that on Mars lol. We would have to provide food, an huge pressurized enclosure, energy/protection for said enclosure, and water. We could just use all those resources I just named towards more immediate issues. Astronauts eat bs dehydrated food rn so fish and veggies would be a big morale booster.

Plants ftw. You don't need eggs and bacon. What a colossal waste of resources that would be.

We should definitely build a community of these air tight biodome homes here on earth. Not only because they're futuristic off grid awesome housing. But also so we can test longevity of habitat equipment and durability of these units. This would also give us a community as a realistic test group that is not government or organization controlled, as that kind of overseeing could effect stress levels, and effect real life results on mental health and interpersonal community connections. That and it's be like the Truman show, it's be great to watch a community of people acting like earth air and atmosphere is deadly. Good tv...

The words you used to describe this were totally off. I get what you're doing here but, sending people to go live in a tree house is a terrible ideal for long term dwelling. A tailor home has better living and space than this. Also that design is time tested and simplistic to create. That should have been the go to design.
