I think the most fascinating part of this mission is just how far away Pluto is. They launched this thing on a rocket so fast that it reached the moon’s orbit in 9 hours, Jupiter in about a year, and it STILL took 9 years to get there!

I can't express my excitement over New Horizons later stages. As a boy who cut his teeth on reports from the Mariner missions, every step in the exploration of the Sol system has captured my imagination. Even as a child I knew we'd never have the biggest answers of extra-solar life, but the promise in the discovery of earthlike planets around other stars has been the crowning thrill of a lifetime. Our current definition of what constitutes a planet is too small for what we will find in this galaxy....specifically, the IAU's 2006 rather arbitrary determination that a planet needs to clear its orbit of other bodies will, in time, prove itself dunsel in the face of discoveries in extrasolar systems. It's a short-time fad...a semantic glich. It will not stand any broad test of time. Pluto isn't defined as a planet at this moment, but it has been for far longer than it hasn't. It will be again within the lifetimes of some reading this.

I also heard that it took into jupiters orbit and took 4 years off the destination time then took neptunes orbit and knocked 7 years off, the whole landing was actually set to land in 2026-2027 but luckily it did what it did and knock 11 years off it’s track. It’s crazy too. If you really think about it when we look through a telescope to a planet in a whole other solar system, when your looking at it, it could possibly be from millions to billions of years ago. In other words if a alien was looking into a telescope at our planet right now, they would be seeing the dinosaurs not us! It’s really cool to actually think about!

Are you curious about things??? when NASA showed Mars pics, I found tons of stuff, people, animals apartments, homes. First pic of Mars Pyramid,can still be seen on google, just to the left of the pyramid, were 3 vehicles!!! about a 4.8 Ford,m a van and I think a pickup...not many found them!!!! Oh Yeah, Giants!! 100 foot and 200 foot, I have about 1000 pics!!! On the tops of most tall mountains where they went to escape the flood!!! Enjoy life!!!!

Having a relatively close and large moon such as Charon could generate tidal forces, which could create some melt water and release gasses from its interior. Small trickles of water from deep within its warmer interior would collect and release bubbles of gas. These would force their way between cracks and trickle out or be released as geysers onto Pluto's surface.

I know our moon generates tidal forces on earth and the earth rotates separately from our moons tidal locked side. Perhaps it's that Pluto has another close moon - if that one orbited differently to pluto and Charon, maybe that would generate some tidal forces just enough to disturb Pluto's interior to create some venting. Otherwise, maybe Pluto's system is relatively young and is still cooling internally.

True...if Charon and Pluto rotated seperately, their would be even more volcanos on the surface. I think Charon needs slowed down a little and collide with pluto. Make for a nice sized outpost world. Then we could move another dwarf planet into orbit around pluto within an appropriate time after the charon-Pluto collision would keep the core liquafied and engage it's magnetic field. We would still have to wrap the planet with some type of panels and/or wrap to hold in apmosphere and heat in. We could have a new world to colonize rite here in our solar system.

Do you know why New Horizons takes the form of a yellow triangular prism, with a short RTG and a shield-like antenna? "The lighter, the faster." A triangle has the least area of all polygons, for it is the simplest form of polygons. No diagonals. Lesser area, lesser mass. The yellow wrap surrounding the craft is a thermal blanket, which is used to insulate the craft from the freezing cold of deep space. A short RTG is present because the probe's initial objective is exploration of the Kuiper belt, and Pluto. It is not designed for interplanetary or interstellar activities, like the Voyagers. The antenna is shield-like so that data can easily be found on a very small space probe the size of a grand piano. The little circle on the other face of the prism is a connector to the rocket. It is the only instrument used for contact between the probe and the launch vehicle. ---- These are the major parts of the spacecraft. The instruments are small, some the size of a phone.

In spirituality (or astrology), Pluto is the ruler of the underworld, a planet signifies transformation and regeneration. Take a pair of 60x binoculars, and put them up to your eyes in your living room. See if you can focus on a lamp or any other object from 10 feet away. No? Of course not. The Hubble was designed to take pictures of suns and galaxies tens, hundreds, thousands, and millions of light-years away from where it orbits. The same principle applies: Pluto is equivalent to the lamp ten feet away. It IS possible to focus close enough to take a picture of Pluto, Mars, and even the Moon - but because they are so close, by comparison to what the gigantic mirror on Hubble was designed to focus on, they just won't be (and haven't been, when they've tried it) very sharp, very clear, or show any great detail. It's just not what Hubble was designed to do. I would LOVE to see them design and put into orbit (or place in a dark crater on the Moon), a telescope that was built for Planetary and Moon observation. The problem there, though - and the reason nothing can beat a probe either flying close by, or plunging to the surface before it burns up - is atmosphere, light (the lack of it, or too much reflection), and geological features like deep valleys or very high mountains, both of which obscure other features that a telescope can't pierce, because its position is fixed, whereas a probe can circle, come back to, and catch the planet or moon from many, many angles - and even if it's a pure, fast fly-by, it's still capturing images from many different angles, that no telescope could get to. An orbital or fly-by probe can pierce it's atmosphere, if it has any, with radar, and infra-red images, perform gravitometric sensing, use Spectrometers to test for various gases and elements, do limited ground-penetrating scans - all sorts of things that a telescope just can't do. So there you have it - those reasons, and many more. Hubble is very good at what it does, even for its age, though. Too bad we scuttled all of our Space Shuttles only 1/3rd of the way through their operational life, though. We can no longer service Hubble.

Pluto is a planet, and unfairly lost its status only because unlike Mars or Earth that's very close to the Sun... Pluto's WAY larger orbit didn't give it enough time to clear out neighbour Kuiper Belt Objects. A gas giant would have struggled to clear out that orbit too.

I am confused. The space Hubble Telescope can send back beautiful and clear photos of nebulas, novas, and galaxies that are far far away, but can only send a 6 squared pixel by 6 squared pixel image of Pluto, which is just in our backyard? On top of that, we don't even have an actual photo of the moon and its surface taken by Hubble. All we have are old black and white picture. Why is that? And why is it that when they show the images of Pluto's topography it has to be in black and white when in fact they are using state of the art technology?

It's all about apparent size. Galaxies and nebulas are very far away, but also are huge. Think about this: a coin and one of those big advertisements. Put the coin 20m away, and the ad 2km away. You can see the ad, but the coin is not so visible. Take your binoculars, and you'll see the coin as almost nothing while you can even read the ad. It's the same deal with the Hubble. Oh, btw... there are pictures of the Moon taken by Hubble, black and white because, well, our Moon is not colorful. If you want to see finer details, check the images taken by LRO (you can even see the lunar landing sites in those images).
