NASA's New Space Plane in BIG TROUBLE! Here's Why
Starliner is stuck in orbit after many years of delays. That might be a lesson for all new vehicles, the most prominent of which soon is Dream Chaser.
However, unfortunately, after years of development, Dream Chaser not only has not yet flown into orbit but also continues to delay its launch schedule since 2021.
So, why was Dream Chaser delayed? How did NASA react to this? Will the spaceplane follow in the 'mistakes' of Boeing Starliner?
Stay tuned as we dive and more in this episode of Alpha Tech!
NASA's New Space Plane in BIG TROUBLE! Here's Why
The long-awaited debut of a winged space plane will have to wait a little longer. During a recent conference call with reporters, United Launch Alliance CEO Tony Bruno announced that Sierra Space's Dream Chaser would not have its first launch this year.
Why was Tony Bruno making this announcement instead of Tom Vice, CEO of Sierra Space, who usually provides the latest updates on Dream Chaser?
Well, it seems that ULA's new Vulcan rocket is in a hurry, but Dream Chaser is not keeping up with the urgency of its partner company. Dream Chaser had been scheduled to launch on the second test flight of ULA's Vulcan rocket for the past five years.
NASA's New Space Plane in BIG TROUBLE! Here's Why
With Vulcan's nearly perfect inaugural flight in January and if the second flight succeeds later this year, ULA's Vulcan will be certified by the U.S. Space Force to launch the military's most sensitive national security satellites into orbit.
This is also very important for ULA since their Atlas V, serving the U.S. military, is no longer in production, while SpaceX is almost dominating the launch market. If ULA wants to regain its position, its new Vulcan rocket must accelerate its launch cadence in the near future.

The issue with ULA and their new Vulcan rocket is that their promised reusability is still ZERO !! So until they get that fixed it will still be way more expensive than SpaceX.

This is only a prototype space plane, the real one is planned to be much bigger. Falcon Heavy would fit this, although heavy is probably going to be phased-out later by Starship. I agree with ULA, they need many successful launches, to even stay in the game long term. When Starship hits its stride, even ULA vulcan rocket will become obsolete. Its not a competitor but an more of an alternative.

X-37B has made 6 flights. Given that NASA wants interoperability between launch systems and payloads they should not be holding up the dream chaser for a non SpaceX launch vehicle. SpaceX has both the Falcon 9 and Falcon heavy. If on can not fly the dream chaser the other can. Has a 5.2 meter fairing. No reason not to use SpaceX other than politics.

Dream Chaser would have flown many years ago with Starliner's budget. And even if NASA wouldn't fund propulsive landing for Dragon, SpaceX should have developed propulsive landing for Dragon on their own dime. Plenty of horrific decisions to go around.

IMHO Dream Chaser is an idea overdue, Boeing has had that program in one form since the 80's for a mini-shuttle. It was even mandated by Congress for ISS (then to be Station Freedom) as a requirement for any manned station to have as a lifeboat. Boeing failed to deliver then forcing the deal with Russia and renaming the US station planned as the International one. The real problem with Boeing is heavy reuse of off the self parts that were rejected from older programs like the thruster system valves on Strandliner that were never rated to sit idle on a pad for days or weeks under pressure. Now with the He leaks not only do they have a lost of control issue for any return trip but the last leak was at thruster levels that is like strapping on a rocket on a pivot causing random counter thrust to any effort to control the craft working against any pilot. Dreamchaser was intended to be a crew only or small load addition to the old shuttle fleet since the late Reagan years. The idea is good but Boeing is not the one to build it. Another canceled project I think would be worth bringing back is the Diamond shaped Aerospike Shuttle that was intended to replace the shuttle fleet. Like the dreamchaser one was nearly finished before the cancel with frames built for a pair of follow on craft. It was fully self contained and with added SR boosters could go farther than orbit. One advantage of the dreamchaser idea is it can be mounted on nearly any rocket (with some adapting collar if needed). There is no need to place it inside another's cap and could expand range with larger rockets. Like I said though it needs rebuilt without Boeing using spare leftovers and updated to newer material. SpaceX is replacing older parts with better ones as they become possible (3 gen on tiles a new gen engine being tested now) When was the last time Boeing built anything that was new that wasn't just a reconfigured use of old parts. All the Max lines are is just extending the old tubes, not a new plane designed. They canceled all 4 engine designs in aircraft, limiting safety for overseas flights going forward. If I was POTUS I would cancel the 747 rebuilds for AF1 and doomsday planes and go with the C5 instead. Already Mil spec and the motorcade planes act as extra doubles. With a shared design for both pairs should also be able to up the order to 5 for the same price as the 4- 747s too.

As the military did right after the 5th space shuttle mission, which launched two communication satellites into orbit, they bumped commercial payloads for military payloads which needed "to be in orbit yesterday". Then along with classified payloads came mission specialist who didn't get along with NASA astronauts. If the military used their own boosters then the shuttle would have started building the ISS in 1988 instead of 1998. And now the DreamChaser is getting bump in favor of the military.

A lot being learned from Starship reentry which so far has been working so my guess is bulk of resources continue to be poured into that SpaceX product which is launching and is improving and validating some really crazy ideas that if even if only ten percent of them work will revolutionize space flight with to date all the craziness with that system (methane raptors, full re-use, two stage, possible re-fuel on and on) is causing some Industry blowback from those now finding themselves to be playing 2nd to all of this which is basically everyone except RocketLab which has been far more modest in its goals offering up competition against Falcon 9 as its primary upgrade as new system. Ukraine continues to drain resources from everything and everyone as does the illegal and now massive War against Yemen and whatever it is that is going on in the Levant. Major Blowback to be expected therefore..

Interesting point. The longer the human body is in weightlessness, the weaker it becomes and when it re-enters full gravity field, then the astronauts might not be able to wrestle the controls, but solely rely on automatic pilot. Glad to see somebody working on spaceplane tech. Interesting lines on dream chaser. flat bottomed, stub nosed and folding flapper wings. I wouldnt call it an elegant design, but if it works, its more advanced than capsule era tech. I would like to see experimentation with fabricated shapes to see if heat shields could be reduced via glide ratio extension in thin air. Might be something for a rideshare program, to build scale models and test. So that any time there was excess launch potential it got used to forward the tech. Brick bottomed aircraft seems a bit odd. Would be interesting to have an X-prize for longest skin temp coolest glide, from a bench mark LEO.

For sensitive cargo and due to no military clearance in the foreseeable future . It is clear SpaceX is not suitable for these mission for a long time 😊

NASA, What a money pit for taxpayers. Obviously private companies is the way to go, where there is competition. Go Space X

They are also largely funded by tax $$ for their development costs.

Dream Chaser is NOT a NASA spacecraft. Are you an idiot? It is a private project.

No? NASA does amazing research and science that private companies can’t and will not do since there is no incentive

Looks like it is doing much better than Space X newest rocket. I really have an issue with all the Elon B.S. that takes place and being critical of others is speaking volumes of Elon's ego short falls.

Who cares you got issues doesn't mean a thing. Dream chaser hasn't proven anything yet. Even Boeing hasn't produced a space craft or aircraft that hasn't been plagued with problems over the past few years.

Dream chaser is being developed by a private company. Any funding they get from the government was desidedand distributed at the start of the program any overages that on the company . Just like crew dragon and star liner. They were given a set amount . Granted NASA did give Boeing twice as much to develop starliner as they gave Space X for crew dragon. But anyways any over budget stuff is now on the companies. It's not like it used to be . Before Space X.
