The number of sunspots increases and decreases over time in a regular, approximately 11-year cycle, called the sunspot cycle. The exact length of the cycle can vary. It has been as short as eight years and as long as fourteen, but the number of sunspots always increases over time, and then returns to low again.

Any two bodys gravitationally interact, producing heat, tides and more. There must be some 11 year cycle with Jupiter and the Sun. One of Jupiter's ellipse's focal points is within the Sun. Surely it's placement is not static, but varies within the Sun over 11 years, and thus produces these changes.

So, is it these flares that caused the hum noise heard around the world 2012, by passing and disrupting the earths magnetic field?

@wstevenschneider well, we are likely heading into one. i suggest to some research on the topic, it's for the most part unanimous that it's coming. as to global warming, it's been rising since 10,000 bc, minus the multiple mini ice ages since then about every 500 years or so. i recommend doing some research on the history of this topic as well. the average increases are not out of sync with the historical data at all. i also recommend googling the term, magnetic pole shift. it's kind of a lot.

Nothing to worry about? It's just called a grand solar minimum that's all. Tmes like Daltons minimum, Eddy's minimum, maunders minimum, or spores is plenty to worry about.

Any idea what mechanism drives this periodic alternation in the sun's magnetic poles? Is the suns' core radiation from the actual fusion process convected assymetrically or in a polar manner? (If it were polar, maybe this drives overall convection and causes the pole change?)

@b101aa2 No ones denied that the sun is entering a quite period, but solar forcing is being overwhelmed by the effects of co2. If solar forcing were as dominant as you claim the average temps would have ceased climbing when solar irradiance peaked for the last time in the 70's. Instead they continue to climb, even most of your denier friends are starting to admit this now. Don't worry, I've already done some reading on those terms you suggest I look up. Silly of you to presume things.

The planets drive the solar cycle. The cycle should be called a 11.86 year cycle due to that being the orbit of Jupiter. Jupiter alone does not drive the cycle. The largest planets have the largest effect. Videos like this one should tell you this.

@b101aa2 C) A few cold spells don't a trend make. Even with record cold spells here and there, the observed trend shows warming. Ppl tend to fixate on records too much, hot and cold. It's the trends that matter. D) I'm not arguing on that point and was already working on it. Look, conspiracy theories aside (which are ungrounded btw), nobody wants AGW to be true. You need to provide verifiable evidence that AGW is false if you want the scientific community to agree with you.

@b101aa2 @b101aa2 "i think you need to get yourself an education." What makes you think I'm not? More presumptions? "...which (weakening magnetic field) throws off weather patterns for the entire planet by immense margins" But there should be a detectable cooling trend, no? From your words such as "cultists" and "zealot" I see that you feel strongly negative about AGW. I suggest you consider that before you reject the verified, peer-reviewed evidence.

@wstevenschneider i think you need to get yourself an education. you do not know much in these subjects. there is a combination of many factors you have ignored, such as the magnetic poles are rapidly shifting since the earths magnetic field is much less then 15 years ago, which throws off weather patterns for the entire planet by immense margins (hence, debunking the global warming cultists), and in combination with the weakening of the sun's magnetic field and other solar events... ya, der..

@b101aa2 Indeed, climate scientists have a working theory verified by the preponderance of evidence. Yet you expect me to take your word on the situation based on only _one_ piece of evidence. A piece of evidence that, yet again, supports the climate scientist's theory when you consider _all_ the evidence. The rest of your statement is incoherent ranting about some kind of conspiracy. Get a grip.
