Thank you for posting this! The 1988 Daytona 500 is my earliest Nascar memory. I was four years old and watched it at my grandparents' house. I still vividly remember Petty's car barrel rolling down the front stretch. I actually got to meet Petty and get his autograph about four years later when they named a stretch of the road near his museum after him. That wrecked car came up for auction a few years ago nearby in Greer, South Carolina. It had been used for promotional photos then kept it storage. It was in really good shape and looked like it had just came off the track.

Even though the King didn’t win any races after 1985, if I’m not mistaken, this driver was one tough cookie. The accident we see here-can you imagine the number of G-forces he took right to the face? The impact, the speed, the rolls-you’ve got to be incredibly tough to hold on and stay alive after something like that. The King isn’t called the King for nothing. All my respect, Mr. Petty.
