These engines revved up to 20.000 rpm, even up to 21.000 rpm in test laboratories. This was truly the golden era of sound in F1 IMO.

When you see these cars live on the racetrack, racing at full speed towards a bend and you think, he has to brake now, but he keeps going, then shifts down three gears in 0.5 seconds and sweeps through the bend as if on rails, you think he won't make it, but it all happens so quickly that he's already two bends further on. It really is incomprehensible

Funny story: I was doing some promotion work in my youth at Brands Hatch . . just walking around in not many clothes lollll A photographer asked if i could lie across a bonnet of one of the F1. I wiggled my way on but the heel of my stiletto shoe (we were all told to wear them) went right through the fibreglass body. These raceways in the 70's and 80's had a smell about them too, not sure if the smell is the same now. I used to go to Hendsford raceway in the UK a lot.

The first time i've seen F1, i think it was in 1996, i was 15teen. It was at Magny-cours at the Renault Days. It was a meeting with a lot of races only with Renault cars. At the middle of the day betweens 2 races of Clio cup, 2 F1 a Williams and a Benetton (with V10 Renault) take the track. It was incredible we could heard them from kilometers away and when she arrives in strait line we could feel the vibrations in our body. Just with 2 cars, imagine with 20 !!! Sorry for my bad english

I remember the first time I went to Spielberg GP with my brother. We had the cheapest tickets there were, so we stood on the opposite side of the main straight and the boxes about 1 km away. We had fun and enjoyed the program when, unexpectedly, the first team fired its engine to warm it up. My brother and I looked at each other in complete disbelief, with a silent WTF on our lips. Sound you hear, that roar you felt more than you heard it. We discussed in all seriousness how we could survive 15 of them at the same time, right under our noses. Half jokingly, we wondered how we were going to keep our pants clean.💩💩 It was a great day.

My driving instructor used to be rally driver. He had buddies in racing circles and always had fun stories to tell while I did my practical driving lessons. He was hanging out at the pits, when they first tested carbon-ceramic breaks in the 80s. They got so hot, the pit crew fumbled a replacement, dropped them and they melted a couplethree inch into the asphalt.

Fun fact: these engines actually start out as a single-cylinder prototype, which is then iterated upon to achieve a certain performance level, say, 90HP out of 300cc. Apparently, this scales near perfectly, so this 90HP single-cylinder engine can end up as a 900HP 3L V10 by just adding the remaining 9 cylinders in a V-shape, or a 720HP 2.4L V8 by adding 7 more cylinders, etc.

I found the on-boards with the rev counter included in the picture most fascinating back then. That BMW engine that revved all the way to 22000 rpm. (That might have been the 2.4L V8 of 2006-2008)

So that first clip at Silverstone was one of the best places to experience the noise. The outside of bridge corner. Sat there for the gp in 2000 and 2001, but popped down there at least once every year between 1998 and 2010. I think 2000 and 2001 were the best sounding; 20,000 rpm with no traction control.

As kid I grew up exactly through this era (watched every race from 1998 to 2006 (many later but not as "glued") and even now I can't go away from it through video games - I must have race or two per week just for vibe. And engines themselves were built so tight that you couldn't turn them cold - had to be pre-heated so block would expand a bit giving room for cylinders to slide

I've never had the pleasure of seeing these monsters live during a race, but i've seen a few at showcase events and it can't be compared to anything the humankind has ever developed. Your mind simply can't comprehend the fact that all of this astonishing sound is simply a byproduct of the greatest ever engineering. It sounds both etherieal and evil. People who never heard these live compare them to superbikes, but the sound has nothing in common. It is orders of magnitude louder than any bike. You don't simply hear it, you feel it with your entire body. And it's not clean and synthetic. It has a rasp to it, an underlying note that makes it unique. Even when you stand next to a car of that era from 2004 or 2005 and it's not running it stil ldoesn't look ma-made, it looks like alien technology and it certainly sounds like one. The new generations... what can i say.. my Audi A6 estate sounds more exciting with the whine of its supercharger. When i stand to a modern F1 car i don't get the feel that we reversed engineered an alien technology like i did with the V10 era monsters. Because they are now so big, the modern cars to me look like dressed up Toyota Priuses.

A lot of the sound - and many ignore it - is actuallly due to the insane rpm of that era. In 2005, the last V10 season, the engine reved up to 20,000 rpm! Since 2014, this is limited to 15,000 rpm, which makes a big difference to the engine sound. Today's engine technology would allow to safely go up to 23,000 rpm. I wonder what that would sound like?

The second video (Honda F1) should be the Twin Ring Motegi circuit in Japan: it as a "speedway" (the oval-alike one used here) that has overpasses on the "street circuit" (from that the "Twin Ring"). You kind see one of the overpass in the final stretch of the opposed straight, when the "speedway" pass over the "street circuit" (the other one is less visible in the footage, half way on the first long corner) More used actually by the MotoGP bikes (and alike) than F1, I can kind tell by the years I played it on the Playstation's Gran Turismo games serie. Suzuka one, by the way, does not have any "oval" facility.

It's not just the sound; there were way smaller and couple hundreds of kilo's lighter too; making battles on track way easier. And yes, compared to these V10s and also the V12s, the newer ones sound like vacuum-cleaners. For example, even the Porsche Super Cup (commonly part of the pre-programme of race weekends) are (significantly) *louder* than the current day F3, F2 and F1 cars ...

12:11 It has to be said that there is a difference between a racing team (Ferrari, Red Bull, McLaren, etc.) and an engine manufacturer (Honda, for example). Some teams make their own engines (Ferrari and Mercedes, for example) and some buy engines from other manufacturers. For example, I am not sure whether McLaren actually ever had their own engines. They have been using Mercedes engines for 25+ years now and before that they used Honda engines in the early 90s and late 80s.

I was lucky enough to be in my early 20s in the v10 era. I when to a few races, but i also went to the goodwood festival of speed a lot. And i can tell you, nothing on earth sounds like those v10s. The melodic screams with the base thumping down shifts is glorious to behold. Every engine since they stopped v10s has progressively annoyed me more and more, because nothing comes close to the thrill and sheer power you feel of the v10. Thats my experience and i stand by it. And yes i have heard v12s, v8s and the latest v6s. The latter sounds like total junk.
