Fun fact: Johnny Herbert was part of the Mazda Lemans team back in 1991 when they won. He won the race along with his team, with him having the honours to do the finishing lap. By the end of it, Johnny was so exhausted to the point he needed to be carried out by paramedics, and he fainted. He did not get to stand on the podium because of that. Kudos to him for enduring such a brutal race in such a brutal car.

Johnny was the original driver of the car at the 1991 le man 24 hr race where they won the 24hr (with Volker Weidler and Bertrand Gachot..side note Volker Weidler actually suffered ear damage from the car which eventually led to his racing retirement ) Johnny went on to a successful Formula One career (winning 3 F1 Gp's) and Gachot had several years in F1 as well and this was a re-enacment or a demonstration display I believe at the 2011 Le man 24hr (20 year anniversary) and I am sure Johnny absolutely loved it....as we all did :)

Later that year Bertrand Gachot would be imprisoned for a road rage incident involving a taxi driver in London. The trial started just before the Belgian GP at Spa in August. Gachot would be replaced at that race by Michael Schumacher.

Talking about how insane some engines can sound: Back in august 1992 (could have been 1991), I was hiking with my parents around Port d'Alon, in the french riviera. We were hearing an extraordinarily loud engine. It was so loud I had to cover my ears. That was Ayrton Senna testing his V12 Honda at Paul Ricard. The track was 8 miles away...

Johnny Herbert nearly had his career ended after a crash in F3000 in 1988. His ankles and feet were severely damaged, and amputation was even a possibility. He recovered, though, and was able to make his F1 debut in 1989.

I was there at Le Mans when JH did this parade and it's really impossible to convey what a visceral experience it is to be near it at full throttle. It's not just loud, it literally fills every cubic inch of air around it with resonating vibrations which you can feel through your chest and your teeth. The only thing that really comes close is an old V10 F1 car. It's a savage, glorious machine. Le Mans is such a great place (or used to be) to hear so many weird and wonderful cars. The all-American V8 thunder of the old C5.R, which you felt rather than heard; the screaming flat plane V8s of the Ferraris; the ear-splitting wail of the old 911 RSRs... through to the unreal sci-fi whine of the hybrid diesel Audis. You could find it all. I say could, as in recent years the cars have become a bit homogenous and the decibels pegged back a bit. But still, there's no better pantheon of speed.

Watching from behind the Mulsanne barriers at night, you could tell which car was coming towards you at 220mph. You could only see a set of headlights, but you could hear the difference between the Jag V12s, the lower note of the Mercedes V8s, the higher pitch of the customer Cosworth V8s, then the insane nutter-bastard scream of the 787Bs which literally made the hairs on your neck stand up, every lap.

Hey, elaborate comment guy here again :) I've got a few things about making power with these rotary engines! Imagine the 4 stroke combustion happening in an oval with a moving triangle, each step at a different quarter or the oval: •Intake is top left, •Compression top right, spark plug on the right long side of the oval, •Combustion into lower right, •Exhaust lower left As with any engine, if you remove restrictions from the intake and exhaust, performance is increased. In case of the rotary, there are conventional ways of "street porting" the intake of the combustion section by *grinding* additional intake area into the oval metal guard in between the rotors. In the top left seal of the seal section, which sits between every rotor, there's a rounded triangular hole not bigger than an inch, which let's additional air and fuel into the combustion chamber. Through the grinded out sections, additional air/fuel mixture gets into the combustion chamber and radically improves the top and of the engine, but also makes the idle quite choppy. If you, for example street ported your regular Mazda twin rotary model and gave it a good exhaust, you should be able to expect a performance increase of ~30%, comparable to a piston engine. In case of the race 4 rotor engines, you can bet Mazda engineers ported the absolute crap outta those ones. Cheers!

Also besides some specific electric cars, or high end cars like koenigsegg etc, there aren't a lot of cars with automatic shifts that work well after some years. We've a lot of Mercedes here in Portugal that are all fucked up in the automatic shifts. And ofc let's not compare the basic American automatic shifts/cars with the technology and double clutch/integrated clutches and experimental automatic stuff made in Europe . Cars in Europe are way very superior to what is made in USA in the ratio: effeciency Vs power Vs maintaince.

I remember watching Le Mans in the late 60, early 70s. Italian TV had just a few cameras on track and the way they captured sound was a crime, but still, what a spectacle. I still remember being a wee bit dude watching the famous "Le Mans Start" on TV, in fact, I remember when Jacky Ickx walked to his car in protest. One of my first racing memories (My very first was Monaco, 1965 when a car driven by Paul Hawkins went into the harbor. I was barely 5 and it's still vivid in my mind). Another sad memory was watching the 500cc Motorcycle World Championship at Monza when both Pierpaolo Pasolini and Jarno Saarinen crashed and both got killed. Italian TV had so few cameras that no one knew what happened. They raced in a part of the track without coverage and they went in, never to come out. There was a time when I was collecting racing drivers and riders posters, but I stopped putting them on my bedroom walls because they all tended to die eventually. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your commentary and your passion for motorsport comes shining through. PS: While I grew up with European motor racing, I have always been fascinated by vintage NASCAR. Before it became a spec series. It's a shame no one put out a credible sim from that era. Modern NASCAR... not so much (although I like the new cars) but vintage Nascar was the bomb. Maybe you can do some vintage Australian V8 as well.

787B on LeMans, well, this was the only car that was heard throughout whole track, wherever you stand, wherever the car is... And in my experience, it was the only car that could do that...

I dont know if you already listened to these, but try the 2011 f1 blown diffuser sound. Especially the downshifts are insane.

The only company I know that offers 4-rotor racing engines these days is PPRE. It starts from 76,000 NZ$ for a complete engine kit AFAIK.

This is how the old F1 cars sounded back in the day, think of this ×30+ cars on a street track with the sound echoing off buildings. Loud? Yes, not as loud as them!

Being from Australia and growing up with watching Bathurst,my choice of the best sounding cars would be the early V8’s like Dick Johnson’s green xe falcon,Brockies SLR5000+ the PB special SS VK Commodore and the valiant e38 and e39 in-line 6 cyl 6 pac triple webber Carberry hemi chargers thunder’n up and over the top of Bathurst the sound echoed off the concrete wall’s and you’d feel it in your sole sitting at skyline Or ne’er the dipper! Definitely a bucket list item The start line at willowbank raceway ready for the green light for the top fuel& funny cars race Or the burnout master’s at summer Nats in Canberra ACT

Excellent list!!! You can bet your ass when I eventually compile my own list video (after watching/hearing many more cars) I don’t doubt for a second there will be an Aussie legend from Bathurst on there 👍

I love the story about this car that the reason it won LeMans is that drivers were driving it at 100% each lap because.... they hated driving the car. They wanted it to fail so they could stop. It was extremely noisy, uncomfortable, hot and just plain nasty. And sadly for them, reliable. But for us... a monster of noise with it's magic spinning Dorito engine and a gorgeous and unique bit of history.

That is fascinating info haha imagine being uncomfortable in there, beating on it as hard as you can, and it’s still freaking reliable 🤣🤣 what a machine
