It’s an interesting move, partially because NASCAR is saying things like they “haven’t forgotten their roots,” with things like the North Wilkesboro race (which generally consisted of rural areas with race tracks and fans from those rural areas), while now considering dumping a traditional way of broadcasting the sport for one that many of those rural fans won’t have access to due to a lack of high speed internet in many rural communities. I still think it’s the correct move all things considered, but they seem to be trying to talk out of both sides of their mouth. Best part of the idea is that it would help fund teams, since NASCAR has done their best to poach so many sponsors from teams for their own “the official toilet paper of NASCAR” kind of stuff.

NASCAR couldn't care less about it's roots. Look at the way it has treated it's core audience, who've been fans for several generations, all in the name of diversity. In the way they treated Kyle Larson, who's half Japanese, over using a word that half the blacks in the country use in almost every sentence in what he thought was private. Compare this to the way they treat the halfrican bigot that 2 years later, still insists that a loop tied in a garage door pull was a noose, even after a dozen FBI agents investigated & refuted his claim!

Can you blame them? It's a business decision. They have to go way out of their way to cater to old fans because the business model required isn't profitable anymore. As a younger fan, I want the sport to be around long enough for me to gripe about its move to whatever new fangled medium they have in the future. After all the criticism they received you have to tip the hat for at least trying to do something. One thing that has been certain in the last two TV deals is that the leadership of NASCAR is very short sighted when it comes to contracts. Since it's all privately owned, the owners line their pockets with hundreds of millions of dollars, without worrying about what it will mean in 15 years. If this was such a great idea, how come the NFL doesn't do it? You can buy the Sunday Ticket, but that's to watch out of market games, something you can't get on TV. I'd agree with a pay service where you could stream in-car cameras and audio, stuff like that, but removing the viewing opportunity from hundreds of millions of Americans is simply stupid.

This TV deal that we've got now was signed 10 years ago
@mattj6676 Жыл бұрын
@@johnhaas2523 I didn't mean they were short contracts, they were short sighted. To maximize their profits, NASCAR ownership split the contract between NBC and FOX who at the time were both launching their own sports networks, NBCSN and FS1. They bought the NASCAR property as the main showcase of those channels. NASCAR never insisted their product be on TV where people actually had the channel. Ratings have been going down and down as more and more people don't want to pay for the "sports package" for 19 channels of table tennis and billiards and others are cutting the cable cord completely. But the owners put hundreds of millions into their own pockets, the short sighted part. Jeff Bezos will dangle billions in front of them again, and they'll take it without caring about what it looks like in 5 or 10 years, they'll have their cash so who cares?

Now that I'm done with being "in my feelings" about this, I think the bigger picture problem with this is NASCAR's current problem is shrinking viewership and fan base. The instinct of the leadership should be to put it out in the most accessible format possible, not a limited one. They need to GROW their viewership, I don't see how Amazon Prime is going to be that vehicle. In contrast, if the NFL wanted to go full subscription, they could probably get away with it to a point, though even for that ratings would decline some. The NFL is probably the most valuable broadcast entity on the planet and has hundreds of millions of avid fans, and some of the highest rated sports broadcasts around. Yet they don't do this.

Since I'm already a Prime member, I assume there will be an additional fee from Amazon for NASCAR, so for those who have genuine broad band, this might be a reasonable option...
@spacecalander Жыл бұрын
@dcstrng1 i do not think there will be additional charge as they do not ask for more during NFL season with the Thursday night games. You are right the racing has not improved. They say they are spec cars and all teams can change is shocks and springs? How are they so far apart per team as far as performance goes?

Driver talent, plan and simple. I'm a Brad fan, but watching Larson do what he was doing Sunday was on another level. I was at the race track all weekend and he was junk Friday and Saturday. Brad and Saurez seemed to be the better cars. Larson Saturday passing Deegan he hit the flat to miss her being her. He found something. Then, 2 laps later, everyone else was doing it too.

They need to allow for weight movement per track, and correct gear required for no shifting. The new car is no good. Either make them real stock cars like before or call the series something else.
@lshamel1154 Жыл бұрын
They for sure a long way from stock cars, they need to be called FUNNY CARS! I have been trying to break myself from watching this since Bubba started flipping the bird to everyone so this just might help me to breaking the habit of wasting my time.

When Harvick said "enough" that was it for me. The thing I really dislike is the fact that races are on TV at random times that seem to be arranged to feed markets that probably have little to no interest in NASCAR.

I remember back in the early 80's many of the races were on pay-per-view. Times change, and so do the ways we watch sporting events. Although I fully agree that the fans should come first, but NASCAR has the tough job of finding that fragile balance between what the fans, sponsors, tracks, teams and drivers want. Also what needs to be considered is the longevity of the sport. The younger generation do not watch cable TV anymore... it's all streaming, so to reach that audience, or in the least to get some exposure to that audience, NASCAR is going to need to make some moves that us older fans may not like. Finally, I wonder if the sponsors consider it a plus for NASCAR to be viewed on streaming platforms? It gives their brands exposure on media outlet platforms that generally don't have any advertising. It's almost a back door into that whole new world of streaming services. In short, as much as some of us fans may not like it, the sport needs to change and adapt with the times, or face the cold reality that it will be left behind, and if that happens, then the sport, and us fans, are going to be in BIG trouble! Note to the ATCF producer: Mike Joy Rules!!! :)

The only ones I remember on Pay Per View were the July 88, June 89 and 90 races at Pocono. At that time Humpy Wheeler said that Pay Per View was the wave of the future. He predicted that eventually every Cup Series race would be on a Pay Per View basis
@shannon3n8 Жыл бұрын
Reading the comments reminds me there are fans who weren't around (alive?) in the late 80s and early 90s, when specific races - Pocono, Fathers Day for example - was available as PAY-PER-LIVE-VIEW only (unless your neighbor has a full size satellite dish set up in his side yard and invited your family over to watch). Then, with the innovation of DirecTV's NASCAR HOT PASS program, where you could pay extra on your DirecTV bill to watch all the races same as on regular cable BUT with the added bonus of 5 or 6 specific drivers having a dedicated 3 person broadcast team, pit reporter, any time the driver/spotter/cc spoke it was broadcast and not censored!!, several in car cameras and dedicated on track visual tracking (and my favorite, isolated in-car non verbal ambient sound, so you could hear the engine, the gas & brakes as the driver raced.) To me and my family, THAT was the best available. Throw in the TV's picture-in-a-picture capabilities and you could watch Dale Jr's 'channel' and have the regular cable broadcast in the smaller picture to watch the race. [We also ran receiver speakers to the system so we could turn down the idiots Alan Bestwick and Wally Dallenbach from regular TV and listen to MRN or PRN instead]. I would be more apt to keep my Amazon Prime Live/Video subscription if Amazon followed the DirecTV formula. But I'm also in Kentucky, where high-speed fiber optic internet was JUST brought to my area in February 2023, so I felt the pain that others feel with regards to internet availability, reliability and cost. Regardless of the TV package offered, if the product isn't good NO one is going to watch, whether it's free or not. There aren't many fans like me around anymore, who watch no matter what. One good thing though, if it does become a pay-to-watch sport: we will always have MRN (and PRN), until that's taken away, too.

Alex Bowman will be back this weekend so more viewers. I have Amazon and Peacock but I favor Peacock over Amazon because they have other sports I like. I like because they cover all Indy's practices and qualifying and the races and the same with IMSA races. Motocross moved all their races there, too. I am dropping my cable after Tony Stewart's 6 races because I have F1 TV PRO that only carries their stuff. I am tired of switching channels to watch their practices/qualifying and races. The clash was down because the spectacle only lasted one year. Have an exhibition race at a different track each year. And of course ratings went down when Elliott was out! They should of had him on every broadcast just to boost ratings. NASCAR has made way too many changes in the past 5 years alone, no wonder fans have left. Heck some fans still want to go back to the old point system still if you can believe that! And people don’t like the cautions on the stages. I think they are great, restarts are exciting and it gives teams a chance to work on their cars at least twice, stops long drawn out races also.

A solution for fans who want to watch it for cheap/free, might be the radio broadcast of MRN & PRN. Have listen to them for the past few years, and usually have a better broadcast than TV especially when it comes to information. Also a lot depends on what Nascar does with their site. What I mean is for the past few years one could watch the raw feed(no commentary) on their site. This season they offering all the in car cameras & scanners for free if one is using a computer(not the app), though no more raw feed of the TV cameras. Not to mention highlights of the race on both their site & youtube. Simply put where there is a will there is a way.

NASCAR has a caution problem. At the end of the stages (except road courses), they throw a caution. At the end of the races, they wreck the cars with multiple cautions until the white flag is taken. Enough, if they want better racing, then set up the races so the teams and drivers race better. Award your stage points without cautions. At the end of the race, let’s have a 5-Lap Warning (10 at short tracks) whereafter NASCAR will end the race at its scheduled length regardless of whether they’re on the green flag or under caution. Before the 5-lap warning, they’ll go to one attempt at going back to green. Maybe add a 20-Lap pit warning (30 at short tracks) where NASCAR won’t open pit-road for yellow flag pit stops. They used to race cleaner because of the risk that racing dumb lost them the opportunity for wins.

I go for the racing not concerts, carnivals or any other hoopla that they now have, maybe ticket prices would be lower if somebody did'nt have to pay for that. And changes of the tracks they want to race on i mean street racing in Chicago, really? That put the nail in the coffin for me it was just a crash fest, if I was intrested in that I would watch F1 or Indy. And NASCAR did not start racing on the backroads running moonshine that was how they made a living. They would do the actual racing on weekends at a local tracks usually dirt. NASCAR needs to listen to the fans before all of them leave. ME I will continue to go to my local1/4 mile for $15.00 and $3.00 beers and see some of the best racing in the country. Just Saying!!!!!!!
