Honestly, Hunt would have a field day every single race he called. On another note, considering the puns Mike sometimes throws at FOX, if we add James Hunt to that equation, we’re not talking about renovating the format. Here's one MAJOR problem: With traditional points, Heim would've clinched with 3-4 races left. Look at F1 when the championship is clinched early. Nobody cares after the championship is won. The remaining 3 or 4 Truck Series races would have been empty houses attendance wise. It'd be similar to covid NASCAR where tracks were completely empty.

There's no talk that Ben clawed his way by the skin of his teeth through every elimination stage to win it all. There's no talk that Eckes tied Hocevar for wins on the season in the last race. Or that Garcia was one spot away from a first win. A few things twisted one way or another. We were this close to having all 4 championship contenders wreck out with just a few laps to go. But no one cares after that show. And that is a dangerous situation to be in.

To be fair, FOX had prioritized that Friday night for a potential Game 6 of the World Series, which would have pushed SmackDown to FS1 and subsequently pushed the race to 10 PM ET. Considering the Rangers won in 5, it felt ridiculous how neither FOX or NASCAR chose to reschedule it earlier since now FS1 didn’t need to air SmackDown. As for FOX’s coverage, that’s mostly on them not having the announcers at the track post-Sonoma. Ironically, they could have done it for Phoenix considering FOX was already there for the World Series.
