Roush's argument would have had merit if it were a 12 lap run, but Gordon ran 70 laps on those right sides. If you go back and watch the full race, the commentators note that the tire doesn't fall off much and lots of them would take two late in the race if it made sense. Everyone thought 70 was too early, but Evernham rolled the dice and won. Truth is, Martin had a championship season while Gordon had an all-time season. Thems the breaks.

I knew several PHD level engineers that worked for Hendricks back then. One had an unlimited budget to look at cam shaft harmonics that would give 0.1 more power which is a significant amount. The tire deal never made sense to me because NASCAR does not want soft tires because they don’t last and chemical softeners make tires soft. Gordon seemed to have tires that lasted longer, but some of that could have been driver and all the other science projects that was going on then. It would be interesting to test a set of tires using the recipe compared to a set of untreated.

The whole "air pressure adjustments" werent common practice at this time. Mostly just wedge and trackbar. He went up on air so the car fired off quicker. Martin had to wait on the pressures to build.
@therealnynetynyne3603 күн бұрын
No, air pressure had been used since at least the 70s to effect handling. It was less effective of an adjustment with the radial tires nascar switched to in 88 iirc. The old bias ply tires would change more with air pressure
@fivestar83373 күн бұрын
@therealnynetynyne360 I watched the race that day. He went up on air. He even says it in the video. If it was so common why didn't Martins team do the same? The biggest adjustments at this time were wedge and trackbar. If you watched and listened to any of the scanners at the time you would know this.
@therealnynetynyne3603 күн бұрын
@fivestar8337 and if 6ou spent any time around the sport in the 80s, which yes was before this, air pressure was always an adjustment, when you hear stagger referenced it was mainly one with air pressure not tire size. Air pressure in t he radial tires was higher return sure but to sqy that they didn't use air pressure as an adjustment before this is just ignorant
@fivestar83373 күн бұрын
@therealnynetynyne360 i did not say it wasn't used. I said it wasnt common. And I did not say anything about "the 80s". Are you just making things up to argue?
@therealnynetynyne3603 күн бұрын
@fivestar8337 pointing out 2 decades of prior air pressure use, not common practice at this time, before this and after this it was common practice why would they stop doing something that worked just stopping for that 24 team to make everyone start doing it again? Your statement was straight horseshit, at no time since at least the 70s was air pressure not a common adjustment

The biggest thing Ray was doing to the cars was chassis design. Find a way to stiffen a chassis, it fades less throughout a race and handles more constantly. We know he was doing things with the chassis thanks to the T Rex car. And don't misunderstand; he wasn't cheating. He was building a stiffer, better race car. The danger of that is a stiffer car gives less in a wreck. Consider; Gordon's dominance dropped off in direct correlation to a surge of deaths. Reason? Other teams caught up to what they were doing, likely thanks to the confiscation of the T Rex. However, this increased the odds of someone getting hurt due to the more rigid cars. And again, I'm not saying Ray did anything wrong or illegal. He built a better race car that ultimately had unintended consequences.

Actually, only one. Nascar screwed them out of the first one in 1990. That whole deal was created because crybaby earnhardt and childress complained to Nascar about Roush's intake manifold/spacer height measurements. Nascar docked him points and money only because it "was a rule in the rulebook". Nascar themselves said that there was zero gain from it. That's correct. No horsepower gain, no increased torque in the engine and no fuel mileage gain.

@@jdtractorman7445 traction control is not soaking tires, it was sensors measuring rpm and if it detected inconsistencies between the rear wheels it would apply brake pressure to keep you from spinning the rear creating super loose conditions. The primitive versions of this were available as early as 1990 by this time they had made them small enough to use without being caught. I know for a fact there was an act tour and busch north driver using one in 1992, saw it with my own eyes.

I do know that NASCAR was all about their "50 Year Anniversary" in 1998 so I suspect they wanted a specific person (young, energetic, new) to face the media... So my bet is that NASCAR somehow helped the "new face" of NASCAR.... much like NHL favors an original 6 team....
