I'm Belgian and got bored to death with F1 about 10 years ago, and now I'm hooked to nascar. Driving in ovals is so much more involved than I used to think, in F1 you're mainly racing the track and then the drivers, in ovals you're racing the other people. That Newman crash was one of those moments when everyone expected him to have died right then and there, we were just waiting for the news, but he was in relatively good shape, leaving the hospital after a few days.

I always thought it was corny as well....that is until the day I realized that NASCAR drivers lose about 5-8lbs per race. When you lose weight just sitting in a chair...that is intense.

They occasionally do road courses..1 of the reasons for the oval is, when you go to a NASCAR race you can see the whole race from your seat.. When you go to an F1 race you sit there, they fly by, and then you sit there a little while longer.

NASCAR engineers say if you look at the shape of an airplane wing and then look at the shape of a NASCAR stock car going backwards it’s almost the same thing. That’s why it creates lift. The roof flaps that pop up on the top of the car help counter that affect a little, but not all the time.

The Ryan Newman daytona crash clip at 10:40 was one of the worst crashes I’ve ever witnessed. It took them 10 minutes for the announcers to give us any updates on Newman. They brought out a black curtain to block the crowd from seeing them remove him from the car. It was truly a nightmare to witness, and the fact he walked away was incredible.

@@Grayson950815 having a preference of one thing over another does not an elitist make , I didn't say that NASCAR had no merit but like allot of people I have a short attention span and 330 mph for less than 4 seconds in a space shuttle with wheels is more exciting than 500 miles in a circle , even with how close NASCAR racers are together and the insane passes. This was what people call an opinion and most people have them and they vary from person to person, simply stating ones opinion does not demish the opinions that differ . You see each person is very different in many ways and different people enjoy different things , that is why we have options when it comes to sports and entertainment. They usually teach the difference between a fact and an opinion around 2nd grade or year 3 in primary school in the UK . I think you may have missed some basic knowledge at some point. Also f1 is the most boring motorsport on earth and the cars sound like they carry a purse. This too is an opinion, I hope I cleared up this for you so you can see something you disagree with and simply give your opinion rather than making wild assumptions based on very little information.

The driver Elliot Sadler who crashes @2:50. my uncle worked for his team as a mechanic and fabricator. He helped get his new racecar ready after this crash. Sadler is one of the nicest guys ever. My uncle has an entire apartment above his garage of NASCAR and M&M's memorabilia from Sadler himself. It is truly amazing how drivers survive these horrific crashes and its due to the standards and qaulity of the people building them. My uncle also worked on Ricky Rudd's pit crew in the 90's. I dont know if he was working for him at the time but Ricky Rudd also has a bad crash @11:20. My memory of ricky rudd was when he was in the Tide car. NASCAR is so cool. obviously large portions are boring but its kind of a sport you put on in the background like baseball and then when something happens everyone rushes to the TV and it becomes the most exciting sport.

they added flaps to the hood and roof that flip up when the car turns around and it's helped keep some cars on the ground, but you can see, since some of these flips have them, it doesn't always work
@luis_g_77
@luis_g_77 Жыл бұрын
The more the car breaks apart the better for the driver. More energy is being expelled by the crushing and breaking of the parts. Ironically its the flips where the car doesn't look too bad that hurt the most, because it means that the car just got the full impact of the ground and all the energy just went though the drivers seat. You want to see the car get destroyed since it means things like the tires or hood are getting the impact and breaking away.
@SkewtLilbttm

Believe it or not, all the flipping and rolling around helps dispel all that kinetic energy in a much safer manner over a short period of time in a much safer way than say a extremely sudden and very definitive head on smash into a concrete wall.

I'm surprised Richard Petty's infamous 1988 Daytona 500 wreck wasn't on that list. He got launched into the air, landed at an angle with the back half of his car on top of the barrier fence. His car then rolled down the length of the wall/fence, just being torn to pieces as it went, then landed back on the track only to get t-boned as he came to a stop. Everyone thought he was dead.

All but one of the flipped cars took place at Talladega and Daytona tri-ovals. These two tracks were built by NASCAR’s founder Bill France in the 1960s to have the fastest speeds possible so that NASCAR cars can match the higher speeds of Indy cars at Indianapolis. Competition with anther racing series created these tracks. NASCAR cars at these tracks can run with the pedal to the metal, accelerator petal on the floorboard, all the way around the track. The cars in front create a draft behind them that the cars behind go as fast with the accelerator raised somewhat, the cars in the draft get much better gas milage. If two cars lock bumpers, front bumper touching rear bumper, and the second car keeps the pedal to the metal, they go 10-15 mph faster than before. Because cars have almost crashed through the safety fence, Nascar required restrictor plates added under the carburetor to restrict air flow to the engine thereby reducing the cars maximum speeds to keep the cars on the track. Now the faster better handling cars can not get away from the pack behind. That is why they race around in huge packs. One mistake and there is a massive crash. Usually the mistake is made in two common ways; the car in front blocking, or the car behind bumping the car in front. Once a car gets sideways or turned 180 degrees around, it will often start flying. NASCAR has implemented roof flaps and hood flaps making it harder for the cars to take flight, but they will still fly if assisted by another car acting as a catapult. At most nascar tracks the cars have to let off the accelerator to navigate the 180 degree turns, and at the short tracks actually use brakes to make the turns. So you will not see pack racing as much, after a few laps of restarting racing. That is why most of the flips occur at just two tracks. Last weekend’s F1 race in Melbourne second red flag restart artificially made pack racing at the first couple of turns and they crashed into each much like NASCAR’s drivers. Close quarters racing usually ends up with a crash, no matter which racing series you watch. But you must admit close quarters racing ihas much more excitement and fun for the fans.

Crazy story that follows the Ricky Rudd crash ( the no# 15 car that did a few pirouettes near the start/finish line). The head trauma caused by that crash had left his eyes completely shut due to swelling and bruising. So what did he do? He had the team get out the back-up car from the hauler, taped his eyes OPEN and proceeded to race the next day. There's video of him in that condition and it's not pretty.

Most of these happened because some years back Nascar decided that making all the cars have equal performance so they run in big tight packs makes for "good racing." @@NoNameForThisGuy Yeah, but it was a sort of foreshadowing that ended up with him actually designing and pushing to have implemented a chassis reinforcement that literally saved his life later in the Daytona crash. Without the doubling of the forward upper roll hoop (the 'Newman bar'), the car that hit him in the window would have intruded into the compartment a few more inches. Trouble is, he had about 1/2 of an inch to go before his skull would have popped in his (cracked!) helmet. It was *that* close.
