MASSIVE DISCLAIMER - Hey Guys! I mention it in the intro, but in case you miss it, this test is done with a PS5 over WiFi 6, WiFi 5 and Wired RJ45 Ethernet. However, my ISP router+modem that interfaces with my incoming Intenet connection are a standard 1Gbe LAN enabled (few ISP routers are WiFi 6 or 2.5Gbe and above). Likewise, few WiFi 6 routers in the UK from 3rd Parties (Asus, Netgear, TP-Link, etc) have a cable interface for your Internet connection (favouring JUST standard WAN, which is the same interface as RJ45). The result is that you MUST see this test as an 'IN-HOUSE' experiment to show the performance benefits of WiFi 6 vs 5 vs Wired, but with the main modem being an ISP bottleneck of 109MB/s (1Gbe RJ45) between the ISP modem and the Asus RT-AX92U WiFi 6 Router. Make sure to keep that in mind when looking at the results and considering the Mbps, MB/s or mbps performance ratings. You can find my full review of the Asus RT-AX92U WiFi 6 Router here on NASCompares - nascompares.com/2020/01/28/asus-rt-ax92u-wifi-6-mesh-review/ Alternatively, this is a 3 Part Review here on my KZbin Channel - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4ezp2Wdnd97hck

Great tip for getting to a 'browser'! Please correct me if I'm wrong (I may not be understanding the explanation), but the 1Gbe RJ45 connection betwen the ISP modem and the WiFi 6 router isn't actually presenting a bottleneck at all. That is, the tests are getting no where near 1000 Mbps. The bottleneck appears to be your Virgin service itself - which you said you thought was 50 Mbps.

The bigger gain with the ethernet was the ping, 10ms faster is a big difference for gaming which is a load of small packets constant back and forth.
@TurboSpeedWiFi3 жыл бұрын
The whole point is using ethernet for gaming is to reduce ping. Sony only recommends 5 Mbps of bandwidth. Anything more does not improve gaming performance. It is all about the ping and jitter.

I tried a new PS5 Slim, and my house doesnt have any ethernet ports, and in my bedroom, i got between 100-171 at the most on a wifi 6 router, but on all my devices like my iPhone 15 Pro Max, Aplle Tv 4k, i got constant 374 mbps. I had constant problems it give me issues loading the store, if it did at times, it wouldnt load images, just squares with cracks through the middle. Or when i try to use the search to find a game, it would sorry couldnt find what your looking for. i would be more interested to know how low is the latency when for example using the Wifi 6 and direct connection to a future PSVR2 who maybe get an option for Wifi 6 would that be fast enough ? would it be possible for the PS5 to be connected to Lan to the internet and in the same time use the Wifi6 to make a direct connection to the PSVR2 As now it looks like the PSVR2 will use 1 cable using the USB port on the front of the PS5 but looks to me that an option for an upgrade box connected on the PSVR2 with Wifi6 would be possible.

For fiber you could also try a media converter. Little box that converts fiber signal into ethernet. But like in my case you may need to figure out and setup the VLANS in the router for internet and possibly voip and iptv. It's not hard but you need the correct information.

When testing you should confirm both wifi 5 and 6 are connecting via the 5 gigahertz band. My PS5 was set to automatic and chose 2.4 gigahertz on my Nest WiFi router (wifi 5). This band has a lot of interference and dramatically impacted my performance. I had to manually set it to use 5 gigahertz.

Your statement is partially false. Yes the wi-if cards are not great (no support for 160mhz channel, no 4X4 MU-MIMO are some key factors). However, your statement about 200Mbps is wrong, this system can get up to 600 easily enough, you just need to ensure that 80mhz channel on wireless AX is not too congested.

At least from my experience ~8 months with the PS5, the ethernet works great! I had so many problems both wired and wireless with my PS4/PS4 Pro that I was convinced that my ISP was throttling the connection. However, the PS5 has hit the advertised down and up speeds wired no issue. I just got a wifi 6 router straight from my isp and while I'm admittedly still trying to understand if its utilizing it correctly I've also had comparable wifi speeds to ethernet when fairly close to the router (other side of the room)

@higherho15402 жыл бұрын
You’re network is not setup correctly. If you have a 1Gbpe connection and only get 100Mbps over Wi-Fi 6 (Wireless AX) then you need to tweak your settings. For example, to get those fast speeds, you need to ensure your Wi-Fi 5ghz and 6ghz bands are using 160Mhz and nothing lower (80,40,20 will cap you greatly). Then beam forwarding helps as well to include MU-MIMO. Sadly PS5’s wireless card is only 2X2 MU-MIMO and only support 80mhz bandwidth channel (which really sucks, why Sony =/). Because of this, it will be very difficult for the PS5 to reach anywhere near 1Gbe speeds over Wi-Fi. Heck, I get 700Mbps over Wireless AC on the 160mhz bandwidth channel on my laptop. AX has the capacity to go higher.

How stable is the connection. I’m not too fussed about the speed side obviously being wired will cut down the stability issues but I’ve always wondered how that was on wifi6

Even if wifi 6 was achieving more than 1Gbps makes no difference, that wireless access point is only going to have 1 Gbps uplink

The only reliable test is: start downloading a game, start timer, stop when downloading ends, divide size in MB/GB and time in seconds, you get MB/s or GB/s. The built-in test is pure shit, it shows way lower values than real downloading (games, patches etc.) usually gets. Can easily say that WiFi 5Ghz speed is capable of >200Mb/s based on games downloading. Haven't tested out again since changed to 500Mb/s but I'll give it a try soon. It's definitely enough to have comfortable delete & redownload approach.
@micha84693 жыл бұрын
I tested it a bit. 1) WiFi 5 ~320Mb/s 2) Ethernet ~440Mb/s Pings are the same. Can't test WiFi 6 for now, PS5 has to many issues with it and almost none speed increase, not worth it to buy WiFi6 router atm

It is unusual that the Speed degrades so much with wifi 5 since it should Support speeds much greater than that. Also for games not just the speed but the latency - thus the ping time and its variance (jitter) - is very relevant, specially in fps shooter/egame sports. Try wifi 5 over the router of your ISP or a dedicated wfi 5 router/access point. Those results might be interesting.

The fiber wires used by Saudi Telecom (STC) is a 4 core SM fiber wire, is that compatible with WiFi 6 But that really is virtually useless for two main reasons: 1) the ISP offers a maximum of 500 Mbps speed (0.5 Gbps) not even a true Gigabit internet 2) The PlayStation network needs a serious server restructuring because it's not utilizing whatever speed you're subscribed to and that is its weakest link.

Changing the wifi 6 bandwidth to 160mhz, or at least 80mhz, ideally at the furthest channel range, with a cat8 ethernet cable connected to the PS5, would potentially reach the maximum speeds that the ps5 can get to, from its 1gb cap.

@@nascompares Well that is assuming, the wifi adapter in the PS5 can use the full range speed, also this is only true for a PS5 as its ethernet port is seemingly only rated for up to 1000BASE-T (1 Gbit). But other devices like a PC wich has 2.5 Gbit (which alot of the mid-to-high end motherboards have now), or even 10 Gbit ethernet will always be objectively faster that Wifi 6.
