What is RAID and why do I need it on my NAS Drive? nascompares.com/2019/10/23/wh...
Large RAID storage for archive data storage solutions RAID is not a new thing. Originally created as means of combining multiple smaller hard drives and combining them into 1 large storage volume (so your PC would only see one hard drive like your C:/ drive, instead of several smaller hard drives connected). RAID stands for either Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks. Now the reason for the two different versions of the letters in RAID is largely due to how storage has changed. As Hard drives have grown progressively larger in capacity, the need for creating massive volumes has been outweighed by the more current trend of data storage arrays needing Redundancy.

Thank you, that was VERY quick - under two minutes you provided the guts of why BTFRS is useful!

Because he didnt bother to explain the word he used most in this vid: Metadata is information stored in almost any type of file. It can include your name, your company or organization’s name, the name of your computer, the name of the network server or drive where you saved the file, personalized comments and the names and times of previous document authors, revisions, or versions. These details could be useful or detrimental to you depending on the situation. For example, if you want to track the different authors of a file, it could be good, though if you wish to conceal the different authors of a file it could be bad. If you are working in legal matters or simply wish to maintain privacy, removing as much data as possible can be prudent, as metadata will follow the file if you share a copy of it with someone else. Metadata can also be very helpful, especially when making searches in Windows and other operating systems. For example, if your collection of pictures has well maintained metadata, then it is very easy to search and find a certain picture you took, at a certain location on a very specific day, with a specific camera. To simplify the concept, you can think of metadata as a file’s description. The description can be anything and it can includes all kinds of data that describe the file: its type, its size, who created it, when, with what, and so on.

You're right and wrong. Metadata simply means information describing the data. While that includes things like file authors and similar, in this context the metadata also refers to the actual information stored by the filesystem about the file itself. Location, attributes, and even hashes and checks. This is what allows BTRFS to detect damage to a chunk of data and then be able to repair that chunk of data, as well as allow other functionality like copy-on-write, file versioning, etc.

Btrfs vs OpenZFS linuxhint.com/btrfs_vs_openzfs/ Essentially file versioning built-in to the both filesys aka Copy-on-Write (COW) Both eliminate/transcend the traditional volume manager & raid and other abstractions that sit between the file system and the disks ZFS seems to be more stable/reliable/mature than BTRFS BTRFS status btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Status btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/RAID56
