@NASCompares - Can you recco a UPS for this NAS? Noob here and got the F8 SSD Plus up and running. Worried about sudden power outage and data corruption. Compatibility chart for UPS seems very old an outdated. Thank you.

Anyone worked out what’s the cheapest highest capacity 4TB, 8TB ssd’s you can get for this coming into the Black Friday Sales?
@RajBhattАй бұрын
I'm loving my F8 SSD Plus. TOS6 is pretty great but I ended up installing Unraid on it and it is a little beast. BTW, I have a 48GB SODIMM installed in mine and it works great! Corsair CMSX48GX5M1A4800C40 for anyone else that wants to do that.

How do you setup the ssd on unraid?
@RajBhattАй бұрын
@fcasinhas I chose "none" for the array and set up all eight 4TB SSDs as a ZFS pool.

the more of your videos I watch and listen to the more confused I become. I am a complete newbie to NAS but would like to have a home NAS to hopefully manage my own data how I want. I am looking for a NAS solution suitable for up to 3 people, can store all our data, photos videos films etc. has the smallest footprint possible and is future proof. can you give me a recommendation please .

With fewer and fewer power draw that processors and nvme drives take i wish there were more passive cooled cases/devices, this is an example, you could realistic passive cool this guy, using the case to radiate heat and with that 0 noise too.

Hw platform seems ok, does it support installing alternative os? It would be a good base for truenas
@nascomparesАй бұрын
100% it does. Running UnRAID on it now. Keep in mind you will need to KVM into it for a TrueNAS install - as that needs OS installation and a target drive
@pbuediАй бұрын
Installed XCP-ng, OpenMedia Vault and TrueNAS Scale on it. At least for the latter one you need to disable VT-d in the BIOS. Not a big deal for me, because I do not see why I would pass through any PCIe device to TNS, but I am not the only person on the planet sooo... Getting the Plus was a no-brainer for me with the 150€ discount on their homepage they had at that time :-)
@RajBhattАй бұрын
@@nascompares I had to turn VT-d off in the BIOS to run Unraid. Did you have the same experience?
@aijokkerАй бұрын
Which NAS do you use at home, which at the office?
@nascomparesАй бұрын
Oh where to start. I use a QNAP for multimedia, but also a Synology that syncs with the QNAP for my pc backups via Active Backup Suite. There is a Terramaster (F4-424, recent upgrade) as my off-site backup, and a Samsung/Seagate USB backup on the syn and terra. At the office I have...well...all of the brands and OS', for a combination of videos, testing and for demos to users in support cases. I also have a Synology there that is sync'd with the Synology at home.

@NASCompares Thanks for this info, I was on the fence, between the F8 and building my own (Tru) NAS box. PCI-E version 3 and only 1 lane, is a deal breaker for me.
@jaycahow46678 күн бұрын
PCI-E version 3 and only 1 lane will still saturate a 10Gb NIC. If it had two 10Gb NIC ports combined then they would be held back. It does not make a difference with a single 10Gb NIC.
@rodfer5406Ай бұрын
Yes, should have more ports

Nobody is reviewing the non plus model. I guess they're not passing them out to reviewers like candy like the plus model. Can't find a single review on the non plus model.
@nascomparesАй бұрын
Good Q! The answer is that (at least in my own experience, but I imagine it's universal - can only speak for the UK) Terramaster reach out to be periodically to ask if I would like to review X device. No £ etc, just send a unit, review it, say whatever you like, then keep/return it. From there, if a unit has variations (eg QNAP with the TS-264 or TS-464, or Asustor with the Lockerstor 2, 4, 6 etc), they ask which one you would prefer. Generally at that point, little-to-no other reviews are out there and a reviewer will more often than not pick the one that will be the most demanded/popular. So, I picked the F8 SSD Plus. And I imagine everyone else did. Sometimes the brand will notice a massive void in coverage of a particular variation (UGREEN did this with their DXP series) and open up a 2nd wave, whereupon there ends ups being higher % of users picking the other system variation). A GENUINE thank you for asking your question, as it's rare I get a chance to answer an "inside baseball" level Q like this online. Hope that clarified it

A tail of two throttles make systems like this less then ideal and hardly worth the extra expense of using SSDs
@bufordmaddogtannenАй бұрын
I still vote for two CWWK P5 boards or one of the branded variants in a case. Although if this drops in price, I'd consider it.
@nascomparesАй бұрын
Watch black Friday....these guys absolutely HAMMER those sales
@bufordmaddogtannenАй бұрын
@angelclaw no, I mean two complete mini PCs. Since the P5 lacks a case it is marketed as a development board.
@doradeutsch2340Ай бұрын
I would have a problem to justify the price of it. But this includes all other devices of the product category. For an empty board with some RAM and a CPU this is far too much money.
